    :O OW OZB Rep!

  • Is this laptop fast enough for general computing? I have seen a cheap ACER and it ran like a dog with all the bloatware loaded?

It was APC magazines Editor's Choice back in March. You can Google their review but the main points are:

      <quote>
Our testing showed the NB550D was an extremely usable little netbook. It seems it has taken this long to bring these ultra-low-cost systems into a situation where you can actually get some work done on them. Web content, including “HD” flash content on YouTube, was smooth and comfortable to use. Productivity apps, including Outlook 2010, which we finally managed to shoehorn onto the unit, ran at acceptable speeds. The unit’s Hardan/Karmon speakers aren’t going to replace a good set of desktop speakers, but compared to the vast majority of netbooks out there, they’re rockin’.

Battery life was extremely nice. With a moderate amount of activity – almost entirely web browsing via Wi-Fi – we got just under four hours. That's real usage, and not just letting it sit idle in the background.

So will this new benchmark in netbooks mean you can throw away that 3kg notebook? No, not yet, but the experience using this netbook is satisfying and feels more like a “proper” computer than what we’ve seen in the past. If you want a netbook, buy this one.

      <end of quote>

    • I use one of these as my main, every day PC. My desktop is only for games, although I haven't even turned it on for about six months, now. Definitely upgrade the RAM, though, as it makes a huge difference.

I installed Portal 2 on mine for a laugh, but it ran so well that I just played through the whole game on it. And the speakers are really good; I've heard some mid-range desktop speakers that sound worse than the speakers in this netbook.

      • Just curious, what settings were u using in Portal 2 & were there at least 30fps? Would this run Starcraft 2 decently on medium? If so, it would make a great casual gaming unit for running newish games on low settings.

        • Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier! If anyone still cares, I had the settings mostly turned to "low" (a couple at "medium", like model/texture complexity), and eyeballing it, I'd say that the average frame-rate is 30-35 fps.

If your definition of "newish" is "over 5 years old", then this could be the netbook for you.

I've also tried Burnout Paradise (couldn't do better than about 10fps; unplayable), Need for Speed: ProStreet (averaging about 15fps; technically playable, but not really any fun), and HL2: Deathmatch (averaging about 30-40fps, totally playable and damn fun). The Street Fighter IV demo runs at 15-20 fps with backgrounds off and all options set to off (or low if there's no "off" setting), which turns it into a basically unplayable slow-mo.

  • this is an ok price, although i got the Asus version for $238 earlier this year(real bargain considering it had a $499 pricetag!) re performance, cpu is faster than single core atoms, slightly slower than dual core atoms but the real difference with these C50 is the much better graphics compared to other NETBOOKS, but don't try comparing with laptops-totally different category

  • +2

+1 from me just for having an OW rep here!

  • arrrgh i cant decide if i want to buy it or not! I would mostly use it for backing up photos whilst travelling, emailing etc.

  • When will 10.1" Netbooks start offering 1024X768 screens? The 1024x600 screens are pain fully tight.

    • +2

It takes some getting used to but you just have to remember why you got it in the first place and you should be ok.

It's not meant to be like a laptop, its more of an 'on the go' multimedia and email device - with incredible speakers and nice compact form factor.

If you plan on serious gaming or doing serious work documents, its not really the unit for those tasks.

I own one and love it.

    • There are a very select few netbooks with 1366x768 resolution screens- I know that the HP Mini 5102 and 5103 both offer them

  • Hmm.. deciding between this and a MacBook Air. I plan to use my current 14" laptop for all my work (corporate/family/academic) and this/Air for leisure/OzBargain/etc.

    1. They're similar in weight 1kg vs 1.18kg
    2. The Air's got a faster but smaller HDD
    3. The Air's screen is 1" bigger
    4. But then its price is many inches bigger, too…

    Any advice/suggestions?

    • +1

Hmm 1000$+ or 336$ for something that does the exact same thing….Difficult decision ;)

Is it worth paying 3.33x more for soething that can do the same thing but is deemed 'cool'

      • +4

Ha. Not sure whether M's post was trolling, but MacBook Air does a lot more

        • 1366x768 vs 1024x600
        • 2nd gen Core i5 vs AMD C50
        • Thunderbolt?

11.6" MacBook Air is almost a full-on machine for work, and you can do maximum 4GB memory to run virtualisation, etc. Not too sure about this.

Then again, it's $1099 vs. $336. Apple and orange.

        • Hahah, nahh I'm seriously considering the two. Apologies for not mentioning I'm comparing the Toshiba to the previous gen of the Airs. (and yes, they're still available, overseas) So it's more like $336 vs. $700.

          1. The higher resolution is definitely more preferable
          2. The CPU is irrelevant because I plan on pretty much just surfing. I don't game, and I watch movies on the TV
          3. Thunderbolt looks interesting, but then again for reason #2 and the fact I use an NAS for accessing/storing my media content makes me think it wouldn't be of much use.

          4. Is it possible to run both Mac OS and XP/7 on the Air?

          5. How much faster does XP/7 load on an SSD vs a usual 2.5" ?
          6. I wonder if the Air has (over-)heating issues because I don't see any vents..
        • but yes it's still twice the price.

        • +1

If you want a faster and larger netbook which is still cheaper than the MBA, the ASUS 1215N deal posted on OzBargain previously is still available.

          12.1" 1366 x 768 screen, 1.8GHz Intel Atom D525 Dual-Core, 2GB RAM, 250GB Hard Drive for about US$360 incl. delivery

Albeit it is heavier than these two options at roughly 1.46kg, and also a lot thicker than both

  • I was in OW yesterday and they had quite a few Laptops on clearance. I don't know whether this was just the local store or an accross the board thing. Might be worth a look if anyone needs one though.

  • I think clearance is the thing to focus on. It looks like the newer model (Toshiba website) has 320GB hard drive and 6290 graphics. The rest of the specs appear the same.

I wonder about the specs of this netbook class now. I think originally they was kept low to not compete with the higher end models that Toshiba and other companies offer. Now that tablets are out there I think they need to offer a bit more. They could do with more RAM and a gigabit nic and as other have noted better screen res.

As for comparisons and tough decisions how about this Vs. the Asus transformer 32GB which has had a few good deals lately. I'd speculate they have a new model coming too?

  • Pity it only comes with Win 7 Starter, meaning no Aero. It'd run much faster with XP or Win 7 Home. I find XP much better for netbooks anyway, uses less system resources and the task bar isn't so thick. You REALLY notice losing those few extra pixels on a 1024x600 screen.

    • fyi, there is a patch to enable aero on win7 starter, although turning it off will help speed up some games

    Rep,
    You wrote: "Available Online Only"

I was at Office Works Bondi Junction today and they have exactly the same price in store ($336). And it's their standard price for this model, not a sale price.

    • I'm thinking he only wrote that because that is what it said on their webpage, which is understandable.

They should update their page if they are going to sell it in-store as well.

    • +4

Hi bob19, thanks for your interest.

You’re absolutely right, $336 is our “standard” price for this computer because Officeworks don’t do sales and high-low pricing, just price matching or beating by 5%.

We would also like to clarify that we said “available online only because there are less than 30 of these netbooks available in our stores and the majority of those are ex-display models. We didn’t want to post about that kind of minimal in-store availability and potentially confuse and/or inconvenience anyone interested in purchasing one. We know exactly how many we have in our warehouse and we know we can deliver on those that are ordered so we thought it best to only talk here about the online availability.

Thanks for pointing this out to us bob19 and giving us the opportunity to clarify – we value your contribution.

      All the best
      Will (Officeworks)

Hi Rep! Welcome, It will be great to see some great OW deals on this site.

I just want to say though that your website causes a huge amount of frustration with limited stock items. Just do a search for Officeworks here on Ozbargain.

You need to find the product log in, add to cart, pick one store, then it will say none available. So then you have to go through it all again for each individual store until you may or may not find what you are looking for.

DSE and Big W are so much more user friendly. You don't have to log in just to find stock, you select a product, put in your postcode, on one page it brings up all the surrounding stores nearby and lists whether they have stock or not.

They don't charge handling to collect in store either. I'm not sure whether you guys still do or not.

Because of these issues I don't bother much with your online site anymore.

        • Hi Jools and POWERevolution - thanks for your constructive feedback, we really appreciate it.

We are conscious of stock availability information on the website being an issue for some customers and we’re in the process of improving the way we present this information. The reason we’re doing it that way at the moment is because we actually have multiple distribution centers across Australia, and the stock availability you see on the site is based on where we think you are located, or where you have told us in previous visits to the site where you are located, which can cause some discrepancies when you enter details later in the process. Our more complex supply chain allows us to do some great things though - such as offer same day delivery.

Earlier this year we removed our handling fee and delivery is free for non-big and bulky orders over $55 in metro areas, and there’s no charge to pick up in store.

I hope this information helps and again, thank you for your contribution. Your feedback is really valuable and we’ve discussed it with our online team in the context of improvements they’re working on in the background.

Referring to your earlier comment Jools; we look forward to posting more great deals too. We also look forward to receiving more valuable feedback.

          Kind regards
          Will (Officeworks)

  • THANK YOU THIS IS AMAZING.

But PLEASE work on your website. I had errors pop up everywhere and had to retry the entire process as soon as I tried to even click a link (such as the Terms and Conditions, which in the end I was unable to read).

Also, when I tried to click on the "Print Confirmation of Order" link, nothing happened and I sat there panicking and clicking away for 5 minutes with no response. But thank you very very much for sending a back up to my email which I was able to receive.
