Audio Technica ATH-R70X Professional Open Back Reference Headphones $369 + Delivery @ UMart

70

Probably the only Audio Technica headphones you'll see me recommend. Very well regarded, but you need an amp.

For those who hanging out for a Sennheiser HD 6XX deal, this might be a very, very good alternative. Similar to them in basic sound signature (warm bass with treble and bass roll off), just slightly less mid-forward but a better soundstage.

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2020

They just wind up being too pricey or too pitchy compared to the alternatives. People love the M50X and the M40X, but… meh.

      • I don't personally like the M50x and M40x too, but both the original AD700 & AD900, and the newer (old now) X variants of both were, and still are, great value for their level of performance. The entire AD-XXXX line has always been great.

      • Agree on the M50x - but the M40x has pretty tame highs. I'm quite treble sensitive and found it to be a rather mellow listen.

    • But the ADX5000 must be 5 times better because its 5 times the price.

And it's 71 times the number! That's gotta count for something.

  • M50-70x R70x pro7x and Mt8 share the same driver. I kinda like R70x but pro7x is my all-time favourite

    • Same driver size, likely a higher binning in each case.

Similar to how Sennheiser break apart a lot of their line-up. Out of all of those, the R70X is mid-fi, while the rest are more entry level.

      • I am sure that it is the same driver unit. I have R70x pro7x and Mt8 with me now. I had a broken pro7x and i shucked it. Acctually R70x was designed to be openback with some Adx5000's technology. Apart from that it R70x made some improvement on M70x. M5/6/70x were confirmed to have the same driver and pro7x is like the mod of m60x

What I'm describing is an engineering term. In an effort to build the zenith of that driver, there are likely a lot of failures along the way, and these can be assessed via electrical testing and then further quality testing down the road.

So they will seemingly all have the same size and shape driver, but the performance level jumps with each version, as does the quality of the housing for sound reproduction, and the time invested in tuning (both enclosure and tweaking of the driver output) for the housing.

I'd be surprised if they offer the exact same performance between all three, that's more of a Koss thing to do.

Awesome headphones! Extremely comfortable at just 210g and no head pressure. By default comes with 3m cable, I got a 1.5m from ebay. Bought mine from umart a month ago for 399. They are made in Japan, other shops sell made in Thailand. Looking to get Schiit magni 3+ headphone amp to drive them.

Best price for that is still direct from Schiit USA, currently at around $200 if they don't charge additional GST (pretty sure they don't).

Otherwise, it's $260 local from Addicted to Audio, who rarely have discounts… maybe a 10% off code?

More relevantly, A2A haven't had it in stock for months and have no ETA available.
