200 Smooth Motion Rate is not equal to 200Hz. I think this one is only 60Hz panel.

    • It's likely 100hz with every second frame 'made up' to create the 200 Smooth Motion Rate.

The more important question is whether it supports HDMI 2.1.

      • I dont belive it is. 2.0 only.

How much of a dealbreaker is a lack of 2.1 going to really be on the new consoles? are we expecting many games to be able to hit 120/4k? This tv looks a pretty great deal with that being my only real concern

      • Maybe you are the last one to believe in the new normal.

For the marketeers have made it so and made it accepted truth that SMR=Refresh, as if it were carved in stone thousands of years ago

      • yeah you might be right… 100Hz makes sense

Whirlpool users indicate it is a 100hz panel, but i dont think anyone has got it to display content higher than 60hz. It's HDMI 2.0. I've been eyeing this sucker off all year, but i won't bite unless there is a crazy cheap price.

apologies, I guess I don't have enough technical knowledge to understand the difference. I have reverted to simply "200 Smooth Motion Rate" to make sure I am not misleading.

      • all good :)

        • For my understanding. When it says "200 Smooth Motion Rate" but also "200Hz refresh rate" how do you tell what the panel is?
For Example the Samsung Q80T also claims a "200Hz motion rate"

          • +3

@TheIronDuckling: TV panels are typically all either 50/60 or 100/120. Anything higher is marketing tripe referring to a setting you can enable "smooth motion" that causes what is known as the "soap opera effect".

If in doubt google the TV or read up on whirlpool forums.

            • +2

@Xizor: And as rule of thumb if the retailer lists 100 motion rate the panel is 50/60Hz and if the retailer lists 200 motion rate, the panel is likely to be 100/120Hz.

  • This one or the Q80T for a brighter living room?

  • I'm torn between this and the Samsung Q80T. From my limited knowledge of what makes a good TV, am I right in that they're very similar specs-wise? I just can't figure out why the Sammy costs $400 more yet it's flying off the shelves at JB while the Hisense not so much.

Have you seen them side by side? I'm in the same boat.
Although I'd imagine the Samsung is selling better because 'Samsung'

      • Haven't seen them side by side but have used a Hisense Q8 before. The Q8 gets great reviews and I'm definitely no expert, but I actually thought the black bits looked a bit grey and could see sort of a fuzzy outline around objects during fast movements - BUT probably not widespread as no-one else seems to have this issue.
As for the Samsung Q80T, I'm not sure how it compares to the Q8. I did see one on display and while it looked awesome I couldn't tell the difference between it and the entry-level Q60T next to it. I think you need to play a regular movie in the dark to see the differences.
I might wait and see tomorrow, it's too hard to decide!

        • Hmmmm, yeah - I have a P7 at the moment, but wanting to jump to QLED. Similar thing happens on that one you described - perhaps part of the Hisense software?
Interesting re: Q60/Q80 - looking at the Q80 as its full array compared to the q60 edge-lit, did you notice any change in blacks between them?

          • @lachhelix: Oh you get the fuzzy outline thing too? That's interesting..
I was a little skeptical comparing the Q60 and Q80 in store as they were playing the retail demo video (ultra-bright yellows and reds and blues being thrown around in slow-mo to make any TV look nice), not a regular movie that would reveal a lot of flaws. Many reviews for the Q60 seemed poor so ended up deciding against it.

  • Just bought one recently from online store. Got delivery this afternoon, but there is missing whole accessories package in the box. Only got the TV unit and stand base, LOL.
Have contacted online store, but they said they still waiting from the Hisense supplier response. It's the first time I bought the electric item and missing the parts, it's so annoying now for the family, leave the TV in the living area and face up to the ceiling, just worried my kid might jump on the screen in any second.

  • I negotiated a brand new Hisense 65inch Q7 down to $1200 + delivery fee (in my case $59) over at JBHIFI at Westfield, Chatswood over the phone yesterday. But I'm no longer pulling the trigger. So if anyone here wants it, the deal is theirs… good luck!
