How many of these do I need to backup the internet?

    • +11

      n+1

    • +3

Will you use PKZIP or not?

      • 7-Zip

      • +1

Here's something I haven't researched in ages. Should I be using pkzip over other compression programs?

        • Doesn't really matter, is PKZip even windows based? I thought that was the MS-DOS version.

I always install WinRAR when I build computers, much of a muchness really. Flip a coin.

    • About 4284 of those, you could save a copy of the whole internet

      • Did you include OzBargain in that backup calculation?

      • Whose number is that?
        .

  • Need 14tb to match my existing drive

    • Can check ebay I got 1 from ebay for 399 delivered but was last 1. Might have more by now

  • Can anyone confirms that you can take the drive out and put in NAS?

    • Yes

    • -5

      put in NAS?

      Norwegian Air Shuttle ?

    • +6

I've shucked 8 of these and had them running in RAID6 on a QNAP NAS for the last 9 months zero issues

      • -8

        What kind of Xero issues?

      • why on earth do you need like 100 TB of space?

        • +15

Technically its 72TB of available space and 24TB of redundancy but for his Linux ISOs

          • +3

@BanannaMan: Pretty sure he just has 1 copy of the Linux ISO's and 7 backups. Precious data, not to be taken lightly.

    • Can do bud

  • +1

    Genuine question
What do you guys fill in these?
Bought a 2TB one a few years ago
Struggling to fill that one up

Really tempted to buy this one, as these deals keep popping up
No idea what to do with it

    • +19

      Linux isos brah!

      • Lol wish I know what that means

        • +10

Its a long-running joke, since we cant actually say whats really in it

        • You do know, but you just don't know you know.

          It's code for "things".

    • +20

Depends if you sail the seven seas or not…i've got 8TB of tv shows and movies

      • +11

        rookie numbers
        .

      • …i've got 8TB of tv shows and movies

Stopped at 1TB, as I never got around to watching

Where do you find the time? :)

        • The right question is, where do you find the time to hoard all those shows and movies?

          • +2

@darthsparrow: Best way is to automate the gathering. Still no time to watch the shows but now you can justify buying more drives!

        • +1

          15 years of hoarding

          up to 60tb now

          • @furythree: That's just 4TB a year. Hand in your Hoarding License on your way out please… 😛

            • @darthsparrow: well filesizes during early years were quite small

i remember RMVB files as small as 50mb. esp with dial up

nowadays 1 linux iso tv episode is like 1-2gbs

so most of it is recent years

as guy said above. you can setup automation with SONARR RADARR and usenet/torrents

or something simpler with torrents and RSS

its a rabbithole though. but once setup its like personal netflix.

i come home and latest LINUX ISO is already waiting for me

          • +1

@furythree: 22TB here. I tip my hat to you, matey!

If you have no idea what youll need it for, save to say you can save your money. Data hoarding is a dangerous game with Amazon these days….

I have a Plex server for my family, since Google Play Music shut down I have been filling it with FLAC quality music as well.

    • Helium!

    • Lots of media and backups, mainly.

    • Bluray backups

  • Better wait for tomorrow for better bargain or grab this one ?

    • I've purchased now - if it drops a lot tomorrow ill cancel and then re-purchase

      • Okay, just grab one, its very cheap , nice

        • They usually dont ship them for a good few days so the cancellation window is of decent length. Worst comes to it you can just return the more expensive one when it arrives.

          • @TightTerry: I see, its great then, awesome, thanks you. So the au plug can only be processed with wd after you received the stuff ?

            • +1

@Susuman123: See my comment a little further down, apparently you can request the plug now through WD customer service by providing proof of purchase. That way they are both shipped in parallel and you aren't waiting additional time for the plug.

          • @TightTerry: Got shipment notice half hour ago
            .

            • @Nugs: Yeah as did I, seems real quick this time around. As I noted, worst case and it drops more tomorrow or the next few days, buy another and return this one.

  • +1

    Any idea what's inside these?

    • +2

Most recent comment mentioned that it's a WD120EMFZ.

    • -1

      a hard drive

      • +4

Wait what? Mine came empty, these are supposed to include a hard drive too?

  • Great price!

  • Waiting for 14TB to get back under $300 again like back in Oct

    • You and me brah.

      • I almost got 14s but I worry they might be harder to find as replacements down the track compared to 8/12/16TB. Kinda like 1.5/3/6TB were also odd sizes. I'm sure it'll be fine though. I'm talking about NAS use, worst case you could use a 16TB anyway.

  • got one from prime day promotion, has been great without need for any pin modification, a bit noisy at the beginning, but after a while it settles down.

    • Ordered one to shuck. Is there any way to know if you need to do the pin modification or not?

      • +1

try it without first, you won't be able to boot up the drive if it requires pin modification

        • Cheers. Just wasn't sure if trying without the mod would cause any damage to anything.

    • I actually found mine very quiet, people talk about noise I'm not sure what they are comparing these to. In my NAS 4 of them are quieter than the 4TB and 2TB drives in 2 older NAS's I have.

      • Imagine not having a backup

    • +4

      That's 2x 10TBs

    • Downside of the duo… two spinning disks. You can buy 24TB for <$600… Now 20TB in a single spindle..yes please.

    • That's 2 x 10TB though, not a 20TB drive.
So not much of a deal unless you want the enclosure and won't be shucking.

  • Cancelled last weeks WD MYBook, got this Thanks

  • +1

Anyone know what RPM the drive is inside?

    • 5,400

    • +1

Looks like 7200, reddit measured it via acoustics.

      • Hmmmm thought they were 7,200 capable but locked at 5,400

        • ^^ This is my understanding

        • +2

Nah, drive spins at 7200. Hardware cannot be tweaked this easy, heads will start hitting the plates, instead of floating at designed height. Whats could be locked is performance in firmware, but i doubt it, I see 210MB/s on mine.

"All I'm saying is that the sound spectrum of these drives clearly indicates that the motor is spinning at 7200 rpm, not 5400 rpm"

  • How long will they send the au plug from WD ?

    • +1

A week usually, maybe a little more. Apparently you can now request the plug before the hard drive is delivered and no need to register the serial with WD. Apparently you need to just provide proof of purchase and they will send one over. Where before it was >Order >1-2 weeks delivery >register device, another week for plug to arrive.

  • Guys, will these be viable to run in RAID on a Windows PC using an Adaptec RAID card?

    • +1

Yes. Once shucked, they're as good as internal drives, only much cheaper which why they're a darling of OzBargain. That and Eneloop batteries :-)
I have 3x12TB (this same drive) in a RAIDz running on FreeNAS. Very quiet, very cool, ideal for NAS usage. I also have another pool with 3x8TB WD shucked drives.

      • Nice. What is a good cheap used HBA to run these on?

      • How are these cheaper than buying regular internal HDD. I'm trying to understand why that's the case. :0

        • 2yr for External Vs 5yr warranty for Internal drives. Considering it's around half price, the trade-off is definitely worth it.

  • If I just want a basic unraid setup with parity, do I only need 3 drives?

    • You'd only 'need' 2. One data, one parity.

  • Is the power adapter just a standard figure 8? If I have spares of these can I use it until the one arrives from WD?

    • no it's a plugpack
