  • Oooh nice, I picked up 4 of the 14TB drives for a similar price on prime day and put them into a DS920+ (also got on prime day) and now I have enough storage to last me a long time!

    • +9

Shouldn't you be putting the drives in as you need the space? Extra drives should be kept as spares.

That will also preserve the drives longevity.

      • +10

Yeah an excellent point, I liked the idea of having 36TB storage though lol

        • -7

          Last time I checked 14x4 was 56.

          • +8

            @TomGum: Parity

            • @brocky2006: I still don't get it.

              • @TomGum: Raid5 = Lose 1 disk to Parity so 4x 14 becomes 3x14 , the 14tb is raw not formatted, so more losses ;)

                • +3

@epoch: So, 14x3 would be 42TB. So you are telling me 6TB is gone to thin air?

edit: well i just did some reading on this Parity. Very interesting.

                  RAID 5, Raw Storage: 56TB/ 56000GB
                  Usable Storage: 38.19TB/ 39114.6GB
                  Speed gain: 3x read speed
                  Fault tolerance: One drive failure

                  • +2

@TomGum: Real formatted size is about based on 1024 not 1000 like storage makers use, so byte, kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, terabyte so 1024 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 which gets real noticeable as the size goes up.

                  • @TomGum: yep that's right, RAID5 (or SHR) gives total space of 38.19TB. However the volume created by Synology presents 36.66TB usable space (which is still plenty for me!)

                  • +1

@TomGum: I found this ZFS calculator pretty helpful

                    https://wintelguy.com/zfs-calc.pl

                    Good for anyone running FreeNAS/TrueNAS

                    RaidZ1 is basically RAID5

          • +1

@TomGum: Everyone else has covered a lot of the detail but I couldn't help putting in $0.02 because storage guy for years..

So yes, you lose a chunk of storage to parity (1 disk for R5 and 2 disks for R6)

            In a 4 bay unit that's a 25% loss, in a 5 bay unit it's 20% and so on.

So in this instance, yes, 42T "available" after parity.

You also lose a chunk of storage to formatting, approximately 10-15%

So this brings your 42T down to about 36T.

And then you need to factor in your filesystem performance which, even on a modern filesystem may have issues if you fill it past 80% (closer to 90% now), so now you are down to about 29T available (from what was 56T "raw").

So after all that, you get approx 52% usable space - for 100% of your dollar.

Welcome to the wonderful world of managing storage when you don't just think about capacity but also care about performance and of course cost..

By the time you get to 50% in the model above.. you can sometimes rethink (at smaller scales) whether you need RAID at all as you can often get BETTER protection for the same or less money by using single drives and more copies..

      • Is inserting a new drive as simple as plug and play? Would I need to do anything else?

        • +1

Need to add the new drive to the 'Pool' and 'Volume' within Synology storage manager.

        • One comment though about Synology…

My DS215J uses 4 attachment screws on each HD, but these WD White 12TB only have 2 usable attachment points, the other attachment point is in a different place on the Whites to the original WD Red 6TB’s I had in there.

Not a deal breaker though, but someone on another post for these said there were no attachment points at all on their White HD’s.

          • +1

            @silvertone: I left it hanging on 2 screws with my 216j :)

    • I bought 14tb from same deal as well.

It takes quite a bit when I try to create any folder in it, almost like 2-4 seconds.. Do you experience similar delays in folder creation?

      • +4

My 14Tb is still stuck at Amazon @ Saint-Martin-de-Crau, France

        • +1

why did I laugh so much, lmao

        • Took them 2 weeks to dispatch mine, they made it to France the next day and then 3 days later are back in the UK. For real.

          https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/196232/84058/img_2564.…

          • @juz22: Just to follow-up on this, I messaged Amazon to enquire what was going on, and can't fault them on their action. They promptly sent a lengthy apology and credited me a $50 voucher (>10% of the order value). Frustrating to have to wait so long for the delivery, but satisfied with the compensation. Just hope when they eventually arrive they're well packaged now and not just in battered outer retail packs like some of the other commenters received!…

      • +2

No delays with mine, everything is instant? It did take over 2 days to complete the RAID consistency checking though which can impact performance

      • -1

Lmao I took mine out of the enclosure dropped it on the floor by accident put back in enclosure and takes milliseconds to create folder. I would RMA.

      • +2

Assuming you're using a Synology NAS - check the drives aren't still 'slivering' or something like that (i.e. moving files around getting itself setup) as when I first setup a Synology the drives were slow but once this was complete it sped up.

        • I am not using it with NAS yet, just hooked it with laptop

      • Id be testing the drive for errors if I were you…

      • Are you sure it just hasn't powered down and the 2-4 seconds is it spinning back up? Once you create a folder are there any more delays to create another folder or file before it spins down?

        • Every time I create a new folder I see delays.
Copying is fine. Did speed test and that also seemed ok

        • You are right.. Only the first folder creation is delayed.. so like this happens when it first powers on ..
Once it is powered on . .. the consequent folder creation is quite fast..

Is this the expected behaviour for WD external hard drive to automatically go into sleep mode if it is not used..?

          • +1

@ujwols: Yes it is the normal behaviour for an external drive. If it were internal you could control the power down time via power management of your OS. For external drives it usually requires software from the manufacturer to set the time before powering down. In any case certainly no fault of the drive.

    • that's a few linux isos.

    • I thought that deal was 3 drives max?

    • how did you get 4

      • two orders - one for 3 and the other for 1 (using my wife's amazon account)

        • +1

          smart thinking

          • +1

@asa79: usually we share an account but she signed up for a 30 day prime trial for prime day so we used that to our advantage :D

  • +6

I'm still waiting for the previous Amazon UK hard drive deal to arrive, beware if you think it's coming soon.

    • +1

      trust no one
      .

    • +1

Mine took just over 2 weeks to arrive from the UK (ordered on 13/10 arrived 28/10)

      • +1

You must be very lucky. Two separate orders made by me also on the 13/10 are not coming for at least another week. https://ibb.co/18dWHT3 ($299 for 14TB version)

Local fulfillment is very quick (with 24 hours it'll arrive!), but UK orders have always been very slow. US will normally get here in a little over a week.

Not a deal breaker, but just for people to be aware. UK Amazon to AU is a lot slower than other options and should be considered.

        • It seems to be item dependent. I ordered 2 things on prime day. One arrived week ago and the other only sent yesterday

        • Damn that sucks mate, I must have been lucky. I had two orders (one for 3, other for 1) and both arrived on the same day.

        • I have a delivery date of 27/11 and ordered 13/10 :(

    • +2

I received mine from the last prime day deals and it arrived just in the retail box, no amazon shipping box.

I ended up returning it because it looks like it was mishandled and there was a slight odd access noise when it was transferring data…

Pretty pissed off, this was for the 8TB My Book that was on sale a few weeks ago FYI

      • +1

I hope mine is packed better than that!

        • +1

It wasn't nice to receive either :( I'm waiting for black friday hopefully for something more local via Amazon

      • Damn dude! Mine arrived in amazon boxing and was all in tact

        • +3

Yeah no kidding this is how I received it from the UK ffs…

          https://imgur.com/a/SO5Jpew

          • @Choogz: Pffft, stuff that.

          • @Choogz: that's awful!

            • @gentlekoala5906: Saw it on reddit with the USA redditors but this was my first experience…

Jokes on them UPS postage was $70 so they’re crediting me the invoice + $70 so a 1/3 of the cost in postage…

I’ve seen Amazon us post internal HDD’s loosely in a prime box though so luckily I avoided it haha

Just to clarify it was shipped in its retail box, shipping labels are on the green carton, no actual shipping Amazon box.

              • @Choogz: Damn mate I didn't realise it was a thing that Amazon did - glad you were able to get some money back from UPS at least.

                • @gentlekoala5906: Neither did I, my first negative experience from them mind you that it was Amazon AU but fulfilled by Amazon UK…

Have nothing but great experiences with Amazon AU / Amazon US locally though

My Crucial 2TB SSD was packed in a padded envelope from the UK at least, maybe I just received a pissed off pick/packer in the warehouse :(

          • @Choogz: Wow that's bad!

      • Same with my WD D10 I ordered on prime day (irt packaging - no box from Amazon, just amazon stickers on retail box)… haven't tested it yet as I don't have US->AU plug converter. How did you test it without shucking?

        • I had a spare power adaptor that meets the same requirements so tested it but wasn’t comfortable with the sounds it was making.

    • Mine were ordered on 13/10 and arrived from UK on 23/10 (with the free Prime Day Expedited Shipping).

    • Mine just arrived now.

  • Great deal. Sure, the 14TB for just over $300 was better, but this is still below my trigger point for value.

  • Can I stock these drives for 2-3 years as spare drive in case any of NAS drives fail? Or it’s bad idea?

    • Well warranty is 3 years so as long as you've tested it for any bad sectors ensuring its all 100% you should be fine?

      • How to test for bad sector without putting in NAS? Please guide.

        • +2

I used WD Tools extended testing option they're other tools as well but this is the only one I've used before that's free

You've also got HDD Sentinel and Crystal Disk that will report on S.M.A.R.T Data information received from the chip

          • +4

@Choogz: I wouldn't just rely on the SMART data …
SMART can report all good, when you have bad sectors. I would still do a complete disk scan.
Just wanting to say: SMART data is complementary to extended disk testing.

            • +1

@johnmelb: Yeah wasn’t relying on it, tested through other means but depending on the severity smart date might show something prior to you waiting hours for the testing

    • +3

Why would anyone want to stock electronics for future use? Surely in 2-3 years the price will be much lower, might be able to buy locally at a lower price. Maybe even ssd will be an option from a price point

      • Assuming there's no disruption in the supply chain… Its happened before, floods in Thailand for example. Its just another commodity item.

      • +1

Probably lives in Melbourne, worried about being locked down until the apocalypse.

  • +4

    Shucktastic.

    • SMR?

        • helium?

          • +2

@pinkybrain: Most likely helium, I only know that wd now put air filled drives in there 10tb models.

  • I just got mine yesterday, what is the best way to get AU plug? Call WD Aus or email them?

      • Wow that's great service. Do you think Seagate does this too?

        • Can I use my AU PSU from my old 4TB WD elements Ext drive?

          • +1

@redhotchilli: Should both be 12V/1.5A, so yes. As above though, can get one (and an extra USB cable) for free though.

  • Such a big size , I’m always scared of having “hard drive parameter incorrect” appearing . I got that twice on my 2TB and 4TB and lost my stuffs .

  • So this would be a great backup drive for my NAS (as opposed to shucking and putting in the NAS)?

    • +1

You can run synology hyper backup to back up critical files to external hdd, excluding your Linux isos.

  • Picked up 2x 14TB similar price, shucked them and now running in my nas

  • Showing as 356 for me, anyone else?

    • same.

  • +1

Got 2 from this deal. Ordered 31 Oct., arrived today. 4 days early!! According to CrystalDisk both contain WD120EMFZ
