On sale is this excellent M.2 NVMe SSD enclosure that's good for all the recent M.2 NVMe SSD deals.

What sets this apart is that it uses the Asmedia ASM2362 chipset that's vastly superior to the more common JMicron chipset enclosures. JMicron enclosures without the latest firmware update (tool available) are plagued with issues including excessive heat/power draw resulting in speeds being throttled and random disconnecting. It has a USB-C port with USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps) so it'll achieve the lighting fast speeds NVMe SSDs are known for and a USB-C to C cable is included.

  • Thanks, bought one.

JMicron enclosures WERE plagued with issues until firmware v209 was released. New JMS583 hardware revision A2 also improved stability on poor quality 10Gb cables. This sliding UGreen enclosure has no SSD heatsink. Its aluminium case is pretty but useless for direct heat dissipation. High SSD temperature will result in speed throttling and probably premature death.

    • Any nvme enclosures you can recommend?

      • +1

Yes, any non-sliding model, for example https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33035709205.html

"Sliding" enclosures, even those equipped with thermal pads, are not optimal for heat dissipation. It is difficult if not impossible to insert the module with a sticky silicone pad on top.

    • I just looked into it and you're right about that. Seems the firmware update can be a bit tricky though sometimes. I'll update the post accordingly.

They have this one too that's a new model but again no heatsink. This ORICO Enclosure however has a fan so it'd be even better.

  • I've been using a MyDigitalSSD M2X enclosure (JMicron JMS583 controller) with an Intel 660p SSD and haven't encountered any issues.
They relased a firmware update to improve compatibility though.

    • how hot does it get?

      • Gets a bit warm but I'd say normal temps. It has a finned heat sink design so seems to dissipate heat well.

        • Is there a thermal conduction path from the SSD to the case?

          • +1

@lomie: Yes, it comes with a thermal pad that goes on top of the SSD. Once the SSD is in, it rests against the inside of the finned part of the enclosure.

  • Has it expired? Couldn't get the coupon code to work.
