Title should be "was $299 (RRP $359.99)".

  • Any thoughts on the mindstorms 51515? I am fairly new to this and can find loads of references to EV3.

with 51515 you get a much better selection and a smaller hub with more capability, ports and bluetooth gamepad compatibility, but then again it is $440 worth of lego.

the boost starter kit and this boost kit has a very substantial app that has structured activity, games and multiple builds.
primary aged kids may need a little help with the builds

      the bottom line?
      * get boost starter if you want kids to have a blast for less outlay. the standard boost set also integrates with selected lego sets to add interactivity.
      * get this boost set if your kids are also mad keen about star wars - the extra licensing costs are easier to absorb if you are huge fans and get a kick outta the canon.
      * get mindstorms if you will make use of the programmability (its possible to program in Python) and motors / sensors to account for the extra $$$

hope this helps! this opinion is based on my experiences in having the boost starter kit, mindstorms EV3 and mindstorms 51515
