This is the normal Ozbargain price for the phone, good value never the less.
Brought the A72 for $250 from the previous post office shop deal, locked to optus.
    Some thoughts:
    - Battery is the best of any phone I had before (5000mAh and SN665). Easily two and half days of light usage, one full day usage. Switch on auto-sleep to save battery.
    - Camera is meh on stock. Contrast towards the blue end, low light is mid-tier level. Gcam is better, however buggy but workable. This is for the A72, I assume it won't be better on A52.
    - After 4 month of usage, no noticeable general slowdown yet.
    - Security updates are steady. Lets hope it gets at least another year. Usual track record of updates on non-flagship second-tier manufactures are not great.
    - People thought this was a flagship due to the full screen and somewhat misleading multi-camera setup,

Recommended few friends into buying this as a budget general phone, they all were surprised of the value. Comes with a clear TPU case and screen protector applied.
As I don't game on my phone these days, a phone at under $300 exceeds all my expectations, won't be paying $500 for a Mid-tier-flagship-killer-hype phone no more.

    • Agree with this. But have you looked into getting the A72 unlocked? I purchased at the same deal but eventually I'll move back to Kogan mobile so I'll require the device to be unlocked

      • +1

Hi there, if I can find a cheap unlock option. I will wait the full 6 month period and get is unlocked for I think $30 fr Optus?
Please chime in anyone if unlock is possible, as this will be a pass down phone.

Btw, this phone has the OzB compulsory NFC and Band 28.

    • Thanks will recommend thus for my uncle

    • Agreed it is an excellent phone. Got one for the missus. Personally have an Xiaomi A2 and wouldn't hesitate to go to A52.

A52 is slated to get latest Android update.

  • +2

This is an excellent phone at the price. Camera takes a little care to get the best out of it but gets there. Everything else is very good and at this price, can't go wrong. It even comes with headphones and a charger (Apple, I'm looking at you)

    • +3

Agree wholeheartedly. The phone is really good at that price. I’m constantly shaking my head saying “I paid $250 for this”. I came from the iPhone 6s+.

I’m happy enough with the camera performance after installing GCam and as someone else said GCam can be a bit buggy but yeah, I keep on reverting back to the price I paid.

I sum it up as the perfect “I have 2 kids and a mortgage I really wanted an iPhone 12 but good lord this is a great compromise because the quality is so good for the price and I could buy another in 12 months and not even have my Mrs question it” phone. (Lack of punctuation intentional 😁)

    • Camera takes a little care to get the best out of it but gets there.

GCam makes a pretty reasonable improvement -> https://forum.xda-developers.com/oppo-a52/themes/gcam-t41206…

  • Oppo A52 or Samsung A21s the better option for the best bang per buck? Any galaxy A21s users that can chime in?

  • +1

I want this phone with nfc. solid snapdragon chipset, fullHD 400+ppi density, dual band wifi, 4gb ufs2.1 ram, fast charging 18W with a huge battery, dual sim. just missing nfc. I guess you can't have it all at this price.

I was looking at a like new samsung a50 off gumtree around $200-250. any other suggestions?

    • +2

Pretty sure it has NFC even though some places report it doesn't. Got one from JB that had NFC fwiw - I think Whirlpool says similar.

      • wtf really?

        • +1

Yep. it's not well advertised, but my wife and I both got one of these recently and NFC was an important factor for us.

      • +1

Yep. The specs on the Australian website say it is supported. Perhaps not on overseas models?

It has NFC - partner uses it all the time

        • concur - I use NFC daily

    • +4

Yes I have this phone and can confirm it has NFC - can use google pay etc

      • thanks for the confirmation!

      • +1

Was looking at gsmarena and it said no nfc. Thanks for confirming it does.

Omission of notification LED is my only shortcoming. Stock camera is good enough in daylight for social media. Solid phone after 2-3 months use.

    • +22

Most people don't come with a notification LED, so don't be too hard on yourself about it!

Officeworks are beating the JB Hi-Fi price of $249 which starts on Wednesday.

    • oh balls. I was desperate for a new phone and paid $285 at JB last week. I even negotiated that down from $299. That hurt bad enough because I'd gotten one for under $200 a few weeks back from Good Guys.

  • Any thoughts between A52 or the newer A53?

    • +1

A53 is really quite a different phone. Downgrade in so many ways…

  • Looking to upgrade my old galaxy s7 but according to benchmarks the snapdragon 665 cpu in this is slower. No wireless charging either.

    • Looks like im on the same boat as you. Looking to replace my s7 however i was waiting for a price drop on the oppo find x2 lite or neo.

    • Also have an S7 but still finding the performance and camera good enough. Are yours on the way out?

      • Been looking at options for my s7 as it runs like a pig and has for a good year. Very sluggish between app changes, mail receive can hang the app for up to 30 secs. Has never been reset to be honest so maybe I need to go that route. Scared to do so for fear of losing data. What's the easiest way of backing up data on samsung devices such as messages, call history, etc.

        • Smart Switch - Backing up my Samsung device using Smart Switch PC

      • Yeah some apps crash, battery is starting to show age and biggie is my s7 doesn't have volte which is becoming an issue now as I've noticed i need to place a call between 2 and upto 6 times until a call is established.

Mind you I've loved the phone. Lasted over 3.5 years for me so been a solid run. Well worth the 540 or so i paid for it.

  • +2

On the negative side, these phones kills apps in the background even when power settings are set to allow (Ex. CCTV app).
My R15 pro got an update few months back that seemed to work better, then another update broke it again. Oppo support ??? doesn't exist, good luck getting response to your emails.

    • +1

True, and it can make apps behave unpredictably I have found. I've had more app crashing on my A52 than any other phone before, and I've set the phone to "performance" setting in an attempt to make it more responsive.

The battery life, while still acceptable is not as good as the day the phone was unboxed. I also find the camera and fingerprint reader average.

If you need a cheap phone (that looks and feels cheap) I guess it's OK, but I would probably look at other options next time.

  • Samsung A31 will be on sale for $299, which is good value for bucks and reliable?
    Thinking about A31!
    Cheers

    • +1

Got the a31 for 213 a while back on pricing error. Didn't impress me so sold it for a profit. Probably going to get the Poco X3 next.

  • -4

    No band 28, just a heads-up.

    • +5

The specs say it has band 28. Have you found this not the case?

      • Look at the specs on Officeworks website;

        Frequency Band
        GSM 850/900/1800/1900, 3G 1/2/4/5/6/8/19, 4G FDD 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/12/17/18/19/20/26, 4G TDD 38/39/40/41

        I don't know if its a typo.

        • +2

Sellers rarely care about the accuracy of the specs on their listings so never believe them.
This is from the oppo.com/au website for the A52…
          Frequencies: GSM: 850/900/1800/1900MHz WCDMA: Bands 1/5/8 FDD-LTE: Bands 1/3/5/7/8/20/28 TD-LTE:
          https://www.oppo.com/au/smartphone-a52/specs/

The one on sale may be a odd import with different specs too, it does happen.

Anyone who has one already may be able to confirm B28 as the bands are usually printed on the back of the box.

          • @Cheeper: Can't be an import, main reason being there's 4 versions of the phone (v1, v2, v3 and China), the other bands suggest this being v1, which has band 28. There is no band 26 on any Oppo a52 phones.

            https://www.gsmarena.com/oppo_a52-10194.php

But then again, says "No NFC" when users above said it has NFC, never thought GSM Arena too be that wrong with specs. Maybe the band 28 listing is also wrong ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I guess you gotta ask people like you said.

  • What version of Android is this and will it get updated?
I have an OPPO F1s that I've had for 4 years, still goes well but is running 5.1 so a lot of apps don't work.

    Might upgrade for the reason.

  • Pretty mediocre price.

Hoping it comes down to close to $200 somewhere during the sale

  • Excellent phone for the price, got it for $225 several months ago though so wouldn't jump at this price unless you absolutely need a phone today.

    • May I ask where you got it for $225. Thank you.
