Can a wifi 6 router get upgraded to a wifi 6e or does that need extra hardware?

    • Wondering the same thing. I think I've seen suggestions that this router can be upgraded to 6e, but I can't remember where I found that.

  • Is this the best Wifi 6 option around at the moment?

    • The best single unit (non-mesh, but mesh compatible) router right now is the ASUS GT-AX11000, but it's the 2020 model and I haven't seen it on special yet.

  • Damn good price, I paid $479 for mine, very good router!

How does it differ to a $50 TP-Link router? For general household

      • +2

        Generally by $377.51.

      • You pay peanuts…

It’s like comparing the max speed of a Holden Barina vs Lamborghini Huracan.

Both does the job bringing you to A to B, one is faster and much more expensive.

        • doesn't the speed depends on your RSP/internet connection package you are on?

          • @mkh1991: That’s internet speed.

Wi-Fi speed is your network speed.

Getting a faster wifi router doesn’t unlock faster internet speed.

            • @xenoic: Yeah for me, I use it for local networking such as game streaming my PC to my oculus quest 2 for untethered PCVR.

I had some minor issues such as stuttering/latency spikes in AX mode with TP-Link ax50. Wanting a close to perfect experience, I paid the premium to get the performance I want.

              • @protagonist: Are you using ALVR?
Also did you notice any difference between AC and AX? Supposedly it only needs 100Mb/s.

                • @raybies: Haven't tried ALVR, using virtual desktop. AC(866mbps) is perfectly fine since VR steaming bandwidth is betwern 32-150mbps.

In fact my AX50 was really good on AC mode, only a slight tiny stutter here and there, it was the fact it couldn't handle the same workload on AX mode that made me return it. Stutters were hella bad on AX for that router.

No issue on AX with RT86U.

  • I need a new router. I’m currently with Dodo and while they are cheap, the speed isn’t bad. But with the PS5 having wifi 6 I’d like to upgrade. I currently download at 2-5mbps.

  • good local price. often cheaper from amazon uk ($389.53 delivered prime member now, arrive before christmas), but need a power adapter (some models) and dont think covered by Asus warranty.
i should have waited for this one rather than the AX82U i got during prime day. works fine just less powerful.

  • Is this compatible with NBN?

  • I can't find anything on Titan Gear - website, store, Asus reseller status… Does anyone here know if they're an official/reputable Asus AU reseller?

  • If you may need a wireless extender or mesh down the track, wouldn't you want a tri band router at this price point?

I've also heard if you're using VR over WiFi (or any other high bandwidth real-time application), you'd want tri-band to dedicate a band to the VR.

  • Further price drop to $407.15 with coupon.

    • Thanks, updated

  • Its $359 at computer alliance w code
