School Resistant (Milspec) Laptop - Win10 + Touch

Any suggestions?

How good a deal is this X1 Yoga G4 (14" FHD Touch, i5-10210U, 256G/8G) $1499? - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/582277 - it has 3 years onsite warranty too.

The school wants a Win10 laptop that is touch-enabled and preferably with a pen/stylus (Mac is ok, but they are predominantly a Wintel MsOffice 365 (they use OneNote as class note sharing, so a windows 10 machine makes sense). They also recommend a military spec (mil-spec) strong one.

They offer through their preferred local supplier Lenovo laptops (I like their alloy bodies). I am quite happy with DIY on pcs and laptops, so don't need the school support. Prices are Thinkpad 11e Yoga 6th Gen (M3, 11.6") at $1299 and not recommended by them, Thinkpad L13Yoga (i3, 13.3" at $1359 or Thinkpad X13 Yoga (i5, 13.3") at $1,849 [at least they are not ripping us off, its reasonable pricing but not Ozbargain prices]

Research:

I checked out these posts on school gaming capable laptops (- outcome —> Battery life/weight too big a compromise) - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/579166

Cover - seems the eBay x-cover at 160 bucks may be worth it for bad drops and thefts in the first year. read this post too https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/563736

I think you are nuts to pay so much for a school kid laptop.
Buy a much more affordable one, and impress upon your child they are responsible for keeping it in good condition.

For reference, my kids have had a $280 second hand Lenovo, a $400 HP stream and a surplus old Thinkpad. All were fine for 6 years of high school.

If you really want to give them a touch screen, fine, but spending $1000+ on a kids PC is unnecessary.

        Ooohhhh nooooo
        You found it
        .
        It's pain all over.

        Too funnt

    • I laughed out loud. Nuts indeed.
You are right. I guess I am buying my younger self a nice laptop. Not my boy. That is a lot of dough. Peer pressure too.

It's a refreshing wake up slap calling me nuts. Thx. It may just have worked.

I may just pass on my surface pro 5 that is 4 years old. Get myself a laptop

100% go for a second hand business-class laptop, they're usually built pretty tough. A second hand Acer Travelmate is usually thrown away before it dies.

      • My wife has my prior Lenovo T460 with dual batteries and 512gb ssd.

May repossess that one. Have a dock for it too ;)

Sounds like a great option, the T460 itself is milspec for drops, and those dual batteries will be a lifesaver too.

Unity will run on HD 620 just fine as well, and a few older games/GTA V on low settings too.

Would be mad to get a kid a brand new $1500 laptop, use it as an excuse to upgrade and hand-me-down.

  • What mil-spec does it need to cover? I’ll need a number and if it’s mil-spec or mil-std?

    • For the Yoga L13 it is MIL-STD-810G.

  • We are getting an L13 Yoga with i5 for $1509 through our school supplier.

    • Yeah I think the it upgrade on the l13 yoga with our school Congress to $1519, so similar price. Maybe 10 bucks more for WA shipping

  • they use OneNote as class note sharing, so a windows 10 machine makes sense

OneNote works on Mac - no issues.

    • Yeah. Office 365 should be fine. It's more the eco system. And they also do a bit of coding in unity etc
