My Brand New Samsung 32" Free Sync Curved Developed a Crack and The Kids Says They Know Nothing of It

So. This afternoon switching in the primary gaming PC, the kids call me to check this problem….

https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/42547/79743/20200517_1…

A clearly cracked LCD behind the screen
Kids claim the 5th (of course they would. Or may not have known or a factory issue (less likely but I guess hard to prove)

Monitor is like barely a month old.( 32" Samsung LC32JG54QQEXXY 2K WQHD 1800R 144hz Curved Gaming Monitor)

Priced $509 before 20% eBay discount in March.

My home insurance excess is too high.
My credit card insurance May cover it with a 250 excess.

I am expecting not repairable Any advice?

Is it a throwaway?

it does look like something had hit it from the front.

    • Yeah. And even more visible as "apparent blunt trauma".

My question is less on guilt. Discipline (got that covered) and more on cr@p. What do I do now with old one.

I think the altitude black credit card covers damage to product bought with it (although there is a 250 surcharge)

What don I do with the new but cracked one ?

You can sell it for 20 a gumtree, dump it to charity or send for safe destruction?

What do you want to do with it?

May ask how much to fix it?

        • Screens are 90% the price of a new one (curved or not).

      • Too bad you can’t use it as a boat anchor like the old CRTs. A sand board maybe? For the kids?

Keep it for the kids' "brand new" Windows Me "gaming computer" complete with educational titles such as Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? and Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing.

Now you'll have your own computer for yourself and the kids can work on purchasing their own.

    No shortcut to ozbargain.com.au

    Karma perhaps? :p

    • Too funny. It was indeed an ozb deal

  • +12

Thats impact damage i ‘m sorry to say

  • +6

Pleading the fifth basically confirms their guilt.

    • +12

and that they've seen too much American TV
      .

    • Yes, there is no presumption of innocence when it comes to kids.

You should always presume the little b8stards are guilty!

  • +4

Take the cost of a new one out of the kids xmas fund, they're guilty as shit.

    • +6

Just wrap the monitor up and gift it to the kids for Christmas. Saves time, no need to do Christmas shopping

  • -2

Couldve been a pet or neighbour?

    • +1

Neighbour: Screw this guy. How does he get all this stuff so cheap? Throws rock at monitor

  • +3

Go the credit card insurance option, keep the monitor until you have been paid.

  • +1

Been there, but on a 55" Samsung. Was not happy. Go the card insurance. Will soften the blow. Make them work it back.

  • +8

Kids and expensive equipment don't mix.

  • Looks like it was hit by a pen on the sharp end or maybe mechanical pencil.

    probably accidental in nature.

  • +15

"Sorry kids, looks like the screen malfunctioned and deleted all your saved games."

  • I googled "samsung curved monitor cracked" and it shows a lot of results. Perhaps it got cracked even with minor movement?

    • +2

      minor movement?

That little star is from an impact.

Only way to get a crack like that is if there is something behind the screen pressing on it.

  • Do they re-adjust the position of the screen dependent on who used it last?

When I use the home PC, I tilt the monitor to suit my height. I notice that it's always tilted back after my kids use it. Might need to make sure when they do it, not to do it with a finger on the screen.

  • A clearly cracked LCD behind the screen

As others have said, its very clearly impact damage. Something hit the bottom part of the screen.

I am expecting not repairable Any advice?

    Correct, not a economical repair.

    Is it a throwaway?

Basically, you could try to sell it for a couple of dollars, someone might want it for parts, but not sure if the hassle of getting $5-20 for it, would be worth the hassle.

I have the same impact scar on my Macbook, when my 2 year old threw a toy at the screen. I told him he will have to pay it back when he turns 18 :)

    • +2

sets calendar reminder for 16 years time

  • +2

Give it to the kids as a 17" Monitor with a 5" space for displaying photos beside it

  • +2

If the kids are still quite young - I'd be googling (from someone else's network/phone/vpn) - insurance fraud and criminal prosecution.
You could tell them dad could go to jail if it turns out we as a family were found to be not telling the truth about how the monitor developed the cracked screen.
Have them with you when you send the insurance document to some disposable email address and see if they own up.

If the kids still don't own up - I'd be ringing Samsung support and not mentioning you have kids, and trying to proceed with some type of warranty repair or replacement.

I'd be ringing Samsung support and not mentioning you have kids, and trying to proceed with some type of warranty repair or replacement.

Its clear impact damage, no warranty.

  • Samsung have excellent service it could be faulty and a Common problem and for 500 bucks I'm sure they will replace it

    • a Common problem

What does this have to do with the American rapper?

  • +1

You'd be wasting your time trying for warranty, one of the kids did it. You'd be better off banning the kids from all electronics until one of them cracks and admits they accidentally broke the screen.

  • doing credit card claim now… hopefully they process it.

not only did the screen go from 509 to 619 new for the same screen from computer alliance, the 20% discount won't come around for a while… so to replace today would be 50% more (~200$). don't always realise how much ozbargain help you save
    1) 20% discount
    2) Warnings prices are set to increase in the medium term

  • -1

That looks sooooooo done by someone. Also, why would you ever trust kids to give truth that would incriminate themselves?
Don't you remember how you lied when you were a kid?

    • Of course I do, my sister got into trouble when she admitted to doing something I did because I was too scared to admit it and she was sick of being in trouble.

  • +3

I was fitting my new Kogan dual monitor arm yesterday and the 17" Ezio I use as a mini second display fell from about 1.5M falling onto the hard wood floors, bounced and missed my 32" LG 144hz by about 5mm……

The Ezio didn't even have a scratch on it. They don't build them like that anymore!

Anyway just thought I'd share that pointless story… TLDR; your kids did it.

    • Ha ha. I felt just like that a few times.
I have a 19" Samsung that was stats of the art that just refuses to die. Has survived multiple moves … Use it as a monitor for retropie.

  • This reminds me of when my 4 year old son threw an empty maccas cup and hit our plasma screen, rendering it lifeless.

How can a little bit of paper kill our tv? Close inspection revealed approximately 10 little impact marks. The maccas cup was just the final blow.

I'm looking forward to the follow up post where his kids have been broken down and finally confess through sobs and tears.

  • +2

Takeaway message appears to be don't replace anything with screens in the house until the kids wreck it… I'll be taking it on board!

  • Hi there everyone. Google searching and found you have the same issue as me. Although I believe my monitor it faulty and was told by Samsung that any screen damage is not a warranty item.
Using my computer till 9pm no issues at all, I went to bed come back into my office the next morning and the screen had developed a crack top to bottom, (no one had been in the room.and it had not been touched. There was a perfect curve almost to match the curved screen.
It's a bit frustrating that Samsung didn't want a to even talk about it..
