Laptop for student with Touch Screen Recommendation

Hi all, my daughter gets a laptop from school currently and it's an Acer Spin 5. The feature she loves most is the touch screen. She's moving to a new school which doesn't provide a laptop so I'm looking for one that has touchscreen.

Based on my research I've seen these three around the same price point ($1200-ish):
- Dell Inspiron 14 5000 2-in-1 Laptop (https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/2-in-1-laptops/inspiron-14-5…)

Any recommendation or other brands?

Criteria:
- Touch screen
- 13 or 14" screen
- Intel i5 or higher or equivalent AMD

Thank you very much.

Surface are handy for school as they weigh very little. You can get pens for them that work very nicely - the screen detects the point hovering over it and you can move the cursor around without touching the screen (it is not a stylus). It is comfortable for writing, easy to do eg maths assignments.

Otherwise Dell XPS are good. I believe they come in either 13" or 15" screens.

    • Only the Surface Laptop Go meets the OP's $1200 budget though … Plus you can't use a Surface Pen with the Surface Laptop Go. The cheapest Surface Laptop 3 starts at I think $1699.

      XPS aren't $1200 either unless they're refurbished?

      • Does it have to be brand new? I got my current dell XPS 15 from work last year for $1000, I think it is a 2018 model. A 1 or 2 year old surface pro should fit in the budget too.

        • Doesn't have to be new. Refurb is also OK. Where can I find XPS refurb?

  • Surface Pro 6 or 7. Kids love tablets.
You can search the whole internet using Google Shopping.

    • She is in high school and at home will connect the laptop to a monitor. I think a laptop would work better vs a tablet.

A surface is a tablet only because you can pull the keyboard off. It functions as a laptop - you can plug a hdmi cable in (possibly with a display port adapter). I used a surface pro 2 for several years as my primary machine studying computer science at uni.

  • Bought a Flex 5 for around $900 about a month ago. I highly recommend it. There’s plenty of YouTube videos with good reviews of the Flex 5. It’s abit heavier than Surface Pro though. But Flex 5 has bigger screen and battery.

    • Cheers, good to hear positive feedback about Flex 5. How did you manage to get it at that price? Is that the i3 model?

Did you compare it with Inspiron 5000 2-in-1?

I'm about to go to Officeworks/JB with my daughter to have a feel at the Flex 5. The Inspiron looks better on picture but can't feel them first.

      • Apologies, it was $950 (with an Active Stylus included). I got it through doweyy. It's a AMD Ryzen 5 4500U model with 512GB SSD.

No idea on Inspiron, it looks good too.
