No. PS5 needs an M.2 NVMe PCI-e Gen 4 SSD. This the Samsung 970 EVO is but a M.2 NVMe PCI-e Gen 3 SSD. Is not compatible.
And even if it's an M.2 NVMe PCI-e Gen 4 SSD. It needs to be on the supported list for the PS5. Otherwise it's not guaranteed to work.
Only for PS4 backwards compatible games, that's extended storage. I think what they're asking here is about additional storage to run PS5 games, which is currently not available (and the 970 would be far too slow for)
@SanatanaMishra: So for ps5 games, it cannot be installed in portable ssd? Not sure, I only got one ps5 game so did not try that
@lklk901: You'll need something like this for PS5 games (cheapest 980 Pro I could find): https://www.bpctech.com.au/mz-v8p1t0bw-samsung-980-pro-1tb-m…
link me a portable ssd that can burst up to 9gb/s and sustain at 5gb/s
As stated by hollykryten you'll need an NVMe PCI-e Gen 4 SSD that reaches speeds required by Sony's hardware and it'll only do that by using an M.2 slot on-board. Currently any external drive won't reach those same speeds if it's using the USB specifications, since 3.1 only reaches 10Gbps (1250MB/s) and according to the ports on the PS5 console - PlayStation 5: everything you need to know about Sony’s newest consoles
So for all those looking to use NVME drives in external cases with USB 3.1 GenX (typically USB-C) support your not getting it's full potential. For more info - https://nerdtechy.com/best-usb-type-c-enclosure-for-m-2-nvme…
do not buy anything right now for PS5 until Sony confirm a list of compatible drives and enable the feature
Wow great price, hard to resist buying another SSD that I really don't need yet… Oh well buy now think later
The price history graph of camel x3 is crazy, it was over a grand at one point!
Forgive my ignorance but I'm kinda on the fence with the 1TB 970 evo vs 970 evo plus.
What exactly differentiates these two for a $100 premium??
For everyday use not much difference. Samsung 970 Evo Plus has a little higher average sustained write speed.

Surely something were missing here. I was thinking TBW/Warranty but there the same.
Good for gaming? need some space for Cyberpunk 2077 and my main SSD is dedicated to my scratch drive.
Yes good for gaming
any SSD is good for gaming.
Too tempting to pass up on. Bought. Thanks OP
Nice deal, looks like PLE also have the same special price going too right now
ugh wish I had another m.2 slot :(
Not necessarily. I have 2 slots on my mobo, slot 1 is PCI-e 3.0 and slot 2 is PCI-e 2.0 and by using the 2nd slot it disables every PCI-e slot excluding slot 1 (graphics card)
should I bite, or wait for other retailers and their black Friday deals to pop up?
I'm waiting :) and everyone deciding on what to get should check their motherboards' manufacturers website for support information. It'll tell you what your limitations are and whats supported.
bought the 1T from Centrecom a couple of weeks ago. I thought it was $169 but now I look back at the invoice they charge $171.82 plus a couple of bucks 'payment surcharge' (I bought an NVMe external case at the same time, cbf calculating how much of the $2.72 surcharge was from the SSD)
Price for 1TB now at $175, not sure why it went up $6.
Thanks I'll update the post.
Samsung 970 EVO 500GB $92.36 @amazon us for anyone want to wait
Make a new post :-)
But what about Australian warranty?. At least you get that from Centrecom.
Is Samsung M.2 SSD compatible with PS5 as additional storage ?
