A good price, but it's been around this level before, and you might get it cheaper on a Black Friday Deal.
Note this is the "lite" TV version, with no Plex support, only 2GB of RAM and not the Shield TV Pro.
No plex support? As in make it as a plex server?
It can still play media out of existing plex server located in the same network, right?
Yes. You just can’t use it as Plex server. But will be good for Plex media player
@JustNotGod: I would say "excellent" for a media player.
I have the 2017 and love it. Really want another as the plex client experience via Telstra TV is waaaay short of what the Shield gives.
A good price, but it's been around this level before,
Only once, and only for a couple of units.
$199 Delivered
Op, how are you getting free shipping? It's charging me ~$10.
Says on the listing.
I'll edit the post as it seems they forgot to enable free shipping.
Cheers, yes…… It certainly says free shipping!
I'll wait for start of business tomorrow for them to fix that.
Still doesn't give me free shipping yet
Free shipping working now.
Is that remote as …triangular as it looks? How odd.
Yep, it's a proper equilateral triangle I believe.
It's not odd. It's awesome!
The remote is highly overrated, barebones functionality and fragile. Mine rolled off the couch about 40cm the first couple of weeks I owned it and developed a permanent rattle.
It always end up on the ground due to the shape and how narrow it is, it just likes to roll. So much so i had to get it a silicone case on ebay, the plus side is the case feels really nice. The remote is highly overrated, barebones functionality and fragile
I guess it is all relative, compared to the 2017 remote the new remote is amazing.
Yes, a silicone cover certainly makes the remote feel nice in the hand, however, I found after a few weeks the silicone stretches and no longer aligns with the buttons. I've had to remove mine.
I guess I'm comparing it to any other remote you would see in a living room. The old shield remote seemed more like a toy than a necessity.
In NVIDIA's defence, their remote app is pretty good, it introduces a touch of latency but it's barely noticeable.
@AEKaBeer: You would have hated the 2017 remote, it had just three buttons (when you exclude the volume and directional pad).!
@ash2000: I've held it at my brother in law's place, i can imagine getting hand cramps as i flick through YouTube recommendations and sub lists.
@AEKaBeer: It was a horrible little thing…..slippery too, and always found itself down the back of the couch.!

Great deal. Own one of these and they're fantastic.
No USB tho sad asIf you can tell me how I can fit an Xbox or a PlayStation behind my wall mounted bedroom TV, and do it all for under $200, I'm happy to consider it.
Remove tv. Cut a hole in the dry wall above the noggin. Place system inside cavity. Put TV back.
You missed the part about doing it for less than $200.
@MeagerDollarBucks: It would be less than $200 but it wouldn't be pretty but if the TV is large enough you won't see the hole you've cut.
@dasher86: Xbox or PS5 can't be bought for less than $200!
You're getting a lot of downvotes, but the kodi+xbox plays more formats than kodi+shield, and is about the same price as a Shield Pro.
Which formats?
Does the remote on these work over IR or over bluetooth?
Bluetooth for everything other than volume. Volume is IR controlled.
You can select between Bluetooth or IR for controlling volume.
Thx! Is it worth getting the pro version, if you don't have a 4k tv?
Does this display 3D movies as well? Thanks.
No 3D support. At least I have not able to to do it. Happy to get corrected.
Is 3d still a thing?
I thought the nvidia shield was a big block.
That's the PRO version which has a USB connection for playing files from a USB drive, unfortunately this advertised version doesn't have this function.
The pro version also on sale for $325
Fortunately it's $125 less than the pro version.
Just started looking for a 4K HDR streaming player to hook up to a pixel shift 4K projector. Mainly using for Netflix/Disney+/YouTube. Also have Plex running on a NAS at home.
This or one of the Apple TV 4K when it’s on offer around $199.
Home has a mix of Amazon and Apple devices. But am comfortable with Android, so the question of ecosystem doesn’t come into play here.
Chromecast with Google TV.
Agree, "Chromecast with Google TV" is good option, because it basically an Android TV device now. It got it own remote now, and you don't need phone to operate it now, and it is half the price ($99)
I think Nvidia SHIELD TV advantages is only in gaming and emulation, as it has better CPU
Either would be good. Chromecast is quite a step below but fine if you just stream (plus ads). I personally prefer the Apple TV 4K but I don’t think you would be upset with this at all.
Thanks.
Forgot to mention that I’ll be hooking it up to an older Onkyo receiver (which supports 4K and has Dolby Atmos) with 5.1.2 setup before connecting to the faux 4K projector.I’m using an older Fire TV box (second gen) now which supports 4K but no HDR or Dolby Atmos support.
It’s the Fire TV box which I’m looking to replace with something that can support 4K/HDR/Atmos. Used for Netflix/Disney+/YouTube streaming, local Plex streaming and 3D support (tho this would be 1080P).
Been doing some read up, seems the Nvidia doesn’t support YouTube’s VP9 profile for HDR?
Can one side load apps on this given there's no usb port?
Yes watch YouTube video on adding more ram and USB support.
Definitely.
Yes you can, it has micro sd expansion. You can also just send the apk files to the device via WiFi.
Anyone know if I can get the Xbox app on this? Hoping to play games on my other tv via the new game streaming feature
Thanks mate 😃
If I mostly just use Netflix, Prime, YT and Disney+, what is the benefit of this over the built in Smart TV function of my Sony? Is it just that it's a bit of a quicker interface and better upscaling than the built in TV processing? I can't really find a clear answer on their site, but get the impression its more for upgrading lower tier TV's?
It really depends.. ive got lg oled 2016. It doesnt pass through atmos or hd audio as it doesnt have earc. With this i connect to reciever and then to tv so i can hd audio plus Dolby vision. If you have a tv with eArc and they support hd audio pass through and support for all the apps then this might be a mootpoint. As the only difference is the smooth ui and support for additonal apps that you may not need.
TBH if you're happy with the experience of your smart tv then you're wasting money on the Shield. My "smart" tv has a pretty crap interface so much prefer the shield. Also like that it's updated a lot more often than the tv is.
The 2017 Shield was awesome as you didn't need the Pro version to run a server so that was another reason it sold heaps. Now you need to spend a lot more to get the Pro version if you want a plex server.
I'm assuming the answer is yes, but would I be able to run Kodi through this? Thanks
Yes
I'm not keen on the triangular prism remote.
It's surprisingly comfortable. It is light years better than the 2017 remote and it's also much much better than the Chromecast Android TV remote and the mi box remote.
Apart from the USB drive is there any reason to get the Pro over this? Planning to mostly use it to stream from my PC to TV using GameStream.
Pro can also be used as a Plex server.
Aint gamestream only supported in pro?
Pro has 64 bit Android. This "lite" TV version only runs 32 bit Android apps, and only has 2GB of RAM.
Don't expect many games or even recent Chrome to run on it. It is a real pity, given the great Tegra X1 CPU.
For a PC analogy, it's like shipping a high end Intel i7 or AMD Ryzen 9 5900X with 4GB of RAM and Windows 98.
Wonder if there is a way to Afterpay this deal…. Not a fan of Zip.
Is this any better than Vodafone TV?
I have one still going strong 2 years later and it seems to have most of the same features, but less than half the price. Or are they not possible to get anymore?Yes it's much better, but the average user will do fine with the Vodafone TV. Depends what you use it for.
The Shield has much better hardware and support, resulting in:
- Better upscaling to 4K;
- The Shield will play anything, including large MKV Ultra HD files;
- The Shield is still actively supported by Nvidia, with frequent updates;
- Dolby Atmos;
- Dolby Vision.
- The Pro can be used as a NAS, not sure if this normal Shield can too.
This is a good deal with shipping in my case adding $10 (so not a rip-off) and I really want one for my man cave tv.
But is it going to be cheaper on Cyber Monday????
Anyone have a crystal ball I can borrow?
I've just consulted my crystal ball, and it won't be cheaper than $199. However, I'd wait for shopping express to fix the free postage glitch before ordering.
Been planning to get one for a long time, but if I'm getting a PS5, is there a justifiable use case for getting one?
Shield has access to more media apps than PS5. Plex is also a terrible experience on the PS5. PS5 also doesn't support Atmos for streaming media such as Plex or Netflix
Can this lite model support Steam streaming? And if so will the performance suffer over the pro model?
Anyone still not getting free shipping at checkout even though it is advertisedas that?
Still not coming up as free. I've emailed them, waiting to hear back. Phone is unmanned.
Two options. Purchase and claim back the shipping. Prob easiest via Paypal.
Wait.
PayPal might say, "you saw the end total why did you proceed with the transaction"!
@ash2000: Yes they may. Paypal can be a pain at times. TBH depends on the rep at the other end. I've had good and bad experiences.
Personally I'll just wait. Not really sure I want to purchase off a company that you can't call.
@tonydav: Yes, I'll just wait and hope they check their email…
@tonydav: Fixed now.
@ash2000: Looks like they are out of stock now. Sadly missed out
@pizzanpasta: They might restock, if not, black Friday.
What are the advantages of this over say the new Google TV dongle that justify it being double the price?
It's a bit like comparing a Toyota Yaris with a Porsche. Both can drive just fine but one has superior hardware & speed.
The Shield is also less locked down and more customisable.
So basically, staying with the theme of your Porsche vs Yaris anecdote, for 99.9% of people the Chromecast Google TV would be the better option?
I think I'd walk before I bought a Yaris. Or any Toyota for that matter.
Yes actually! The Shield would mainly benefit power users (who want to play large 4k MKV files etc, or have Dolby Atmos sound systems).
Having said that, the AI upscaling of the Shield is really good. I thought it would be just a marketing gimmick but it makes a big difference on a 4K TV.
Lots of people have a 4K TV, so we are getting back in Yaris territory.
Shopping express have just emailed me back to say free shipping now working.
Free shipping now working!
Just had an e-mail from James, tested working.
Ditto re James.
There is a 1% fee for using PayPal or credit card.
Noticed that too. But you can do DD to avoid the fee.
I paid the fee.
Yes, 1% is reasonable.
what's the advantage over this compared to Google TV?
Nvidia has a Faster processor and better remote.
The Google TV is an excellent value device for the money but Google is using the " inkjet printer business model " to keep this price low.
The Google TV interface (which is different to other Android TV interfaces) places lots of ads for pay-per-view content that cannot be removed.
Does the shield do image based subtitles (ie PGS) for 4K HDR content without issue? As in doesn't try and transcode. Heard this might be possible
Gaah just me or sold out?
Yes, all sold out - no more stock
