Problem with my build

Build first PC in years with the new Ryzen 5800x

Connected everything fine, turn on power supplies can see the motherboard power and light but nothing else is on
what could be the issue? incompatible RAM or CPU?

Case doesn't seem to have a speaker cable so can't hear beep or anything like that
got Cool Master MB530P

did you plug the atx 12v cable in?

  • Ok… do you have another ON button? Turning your power supply on shouldn't start the computer. If you wired up a power switch or reset switch, you need to use those. You can also jump motherboard pins to start it. Otherwise, check your motherboard manual if you have diagnostic lights. My mother board has a row that goes cpu -> ram -> gpu -> boot

    • I got Asus ROG Strix B550E Gaming, did read the manual but will read again, it has power switch my case and I plug it in but no reset
I tried to switch the power switch pins every which way just in case I read it upside down and no luck :(

ok try removing the power switch cable from the motherboard and jumping those motherboard pins with a metal screwdriver or paperclip etc. you just quickly touch the PWR + and PWR - with the screwdriver etc. If that doesn't work you have to recheck if everything is seated. I also recommend testing the motherboard with everything outside of the case, then when you see the gpu spin or boot using a monitor, you can install in the case.

  • Could be a number of things.

Do you know what you're doing? For example, have you done this before?
Did you install the CPU and ram or are they still in the case?
If so, did you follow the instructions in your motherboard manual?
Is the power supply enough to handle your systems requirements?
Did you plug the monitor/periphals in?
    What can you see?
What else is in the machine?

    • Yeah, build one maybe 3-4 years ago with Ryzen 1700
all cpus, ram all plugin correctly,

      I must have missed something

      hope nothing Dead on Arrival

      • Try removing piece by piece…. and see if it boots… until you strip it down to its minumum.

If not, start from scratch. Pull it all apart and start from the beginning, just in case.

It's always tough to diagnose without a second machine/diagnostic to problem solve to check if each part is working.

        • No more build for this old man, next time get a pre-built machine

          • @MrMarket: I hear you.

You usually get change from $100 for installation. I'm usually taking parts from old machines, so I tend to build, but I also usually have enough around to test.

It's the worst feeling when you switch it on and it just sits there dead.

            • @TheBird: I bought parts from all over place but we got local MSY store, you reckon I can bring it all the parts there and get them to sort it out maybe they charge $200 or something for the service if all failed?

              • @MrMarket: The problem with buying all over the place is you can end up with a never ending string of blame game for the problem and you get stuck holding the baby.

you reckon I can bring it all the parts there and get them to sort it out

I've personally never had a good experience with MSY so I stopped shopping there, but people seem to love them so it can't hurt to ask them.

If they're not interested, talk to some smaller computer shops and find someone you trust.

        • only thing I did before the build was flash the bios so it can recognise the new CPU and everything went good
I flash it using ASUS flash bios button (Asus ROG Strix B550E-Gaming), just plug in the 12 pins power, turn on plugin pre-made usb stick with correct bios name using their renaming facility turn on hit the button for 5 seconds light flash for 5 minutes then stop flashing, meaning bios flashed was successful

  • Picture?

    • yeah thinking of pulling it out of the case tomorrow and build it on the table and takes some photos, going to sleep soon :)

Look mate, I'm just an ancient PC master race guru who feels the need to chime in for the lulz, but the real concern I have (and you should too) is that you have packed the whole thing in at 10/11pm and gone for a fricken NAP!.

        Back in my day……

  • yeah, all the cable in power cable pin is also in for the case power switch.
it awfully quiet when I turn on the power supplies just the board light and that it nothing else is on, cant see light to the Video card or CPU fans spinning

  • try holding the power button?

    • that I have not try but damn I just dissemble most of the stuff so I can build on the table tomorrow as a test turn again before putting in the case
should have done that first haha, I was confident I can get it going first go but too old for this stuff now

    Could be pretty much anything.

I am guessing you are using a b550 or 450 board, and you need a firmware update to make it compatible with the new 5xxx range.

  • +1

It's most likely that the motherboard need a bios update, if you purchased the motherboard before buying the 5800x

  • Look out ladies

  • I would suspect the Mobo is not compatible with Zen3.
I mean, its the same thing as Zen2, really, its just a small trivial BIOS update. So you may need to install a Zen1/Zen2 cpu first, wait for an update, apply the update, and then place the Zen3 cpu.
…best bet would be to take it to a customer-friendly (good reviews/no rip-offs) PC store, and they can do this for you, as it should take ~10 mins to do so. They may charge you $15 for the trouble, or do a freebie to win a future client.

However, before you do that it could be a number of (small) things.
RAM seated? CPU seated? Faulty PSU? Cables plugged? Non-functioning power button? etc etc.

    • Hello, IT. Have you tried turning it off and turning it back on again?

  • New mobo or old? New ones need a bios update

  • Have you plugged the front panel connectors in wrong and therefore the power button isnt working?

  • Thanks guys for all the pointers, you guys have been very helpful, I give it another shot tonight, and this time slow down and read every bit of manual and look at all the connection points

    • Please let us know what actual products you own so we can check compatibility, not the case. lol

Now I'm too jealous to help.

In b4 the motherboard is screwed directly to the case without the metal stand offs underneath which is shorting it out.

    • yep pretty important.

Thanks all got it to work :-)
I am no longer young, I think I got the pin mixed up, power led and power and I plug the power button cable into power LED pin :)

    • lol well done getting it sorted :)
