MSI apparently have an issue with current BIOS which limits RAM to 3200mhz. I have one but I dont have a Ryzen 5000 yet to test it…

    • Same here - looks like I will be waiting to next week to test it out.

BIOS update will most likely fix this down the line. Based on the research I have done this is the one motherboard I am aiming to get as it provides the best VRM in this price range and their temperatures are very good for sustained high usage. Basically the thermals & VRM in this motherboard are comparable to the $550 to $700 motherboards.

I am not in a hurry though since Zen 3 is out of stock right now, so will get it on later deals. Good price, cheapest it has ever been is $300, usual price is around $360.

    • Thanks, just bought one today. Would you suggest a previous bios if just running a 3600 with 3600 DDR4?

      • +1

Pretty sure its only an issue with zen3 Ryzen. My 3700x runs my RAM fine at 3600mhz

      • +1

3600 has no issues with the current bios.

    • I've read that the Tomahawk is unaffected by that problem, though I also am awaiting my new processor so I can't verify.

  • This one doesn't have the clear cmos button so bit annoying if you like to oc

Protip: Wire up the case reset switch to the BIOS clear jumper. Most people never use reset button anyway.

      • Ah that's smart, cause yeah I always have to open my case to clear cmos when I overclock ram

      • Except when a family member hits the reset button out of habbit, when some outdated pos software they won't move away from has random freeze. Sorry PTSD…

        • You surely will reach a point when your ram timings are dialed in. Then you can rewire it back to the reset switch or possibly just unplug it altogether.

        • Surely there's profile save available on the MSI boards, I have been using them with Asus boards since 2016. This will be my first MSI board in the future. Once you have everything set and stable and all your settings dialed in the BIOS, just save profile (should be able to save multiple profiles and name them). These profiles don't usually reset after a clear cmos. So after accidental clicks, you should be able to just load up your profile and that should tune in all the RAM timings, overclock, HDD priorities, etc.

Still remember when it was on sale for $300 during the prime day

  • Not a big 'fan' or active cooling (the irony)…

I hope MSI would release a revised Tomahawk X570 board with passive cooling like Asus did

    • I'm assuming you don't have a x570 because you can't even hear the chipset cooling fan on my gigabyte master. You can at boot for a couple of seconds but that's 100% speed to blow the dust build up.

      • +1

Hei that was not my point, a chipset cooling fan will always prone to failure (has been proven before)

Anyway - glad to hear your boards fan is very quieter, your specific board looks very nice and has some nice features too

If you don’t use the chipset lanes aggressively you won’t need the fan. It doesn’t spin until you need it, and if you’re only using one PCIe from the CPU and the M.2 from the CPU, then wouldn’t the chipset not be used at all?

          • @ATangk: Yep and to honest I don't think my chipset fan has ever had to spin up above idle and believe me I've tried to max it. It's a ball bearing fan and rated for like 9 years so no need for concern. Dar8auer says in a video that you don't even need the fan as the heat sink is enough to cool it.

            • +1

@mckayver: Kinda agree for your board mate - as you have a very decent board to be honest.
Unfortunately some of the 'cheaper' X570 boards will have this fan failed in coming years for sure…

I am really liking the ROG Crosshair viii Dark Hero though, they have replaced the fan with a massive heatsink and everything looks very promising.
But its damn expensive too, I can get two of these Tomahawks for one Dark Hero, maybe if I win the lotto then I might get 5950x and the Dark Hero LOL

            • @mckayver: There are certain boards, this one included, that dont spin the PWM fan at all when not needed. So it'll be silent as the rest of the PC if not needed.

              • @ATangk: You set the fan curve how you want in bios. I leave mine at stock and it's always spinning and it's silent. I think the fan sits about 30%.

                • @mckayver: Im saying different manufacturers can have the fan completely off.

                  • @ATangk: Yeah all x570 chipset board fans can be turned off.

                    • @mckayver: ASRock and Asus cant. At least as of May this year.

This is a good mobo, priced at 260 or less I say go for it.

    • 300 is a great price already, it hasnt been released that long and has VRM's equivalent of a $500/600 Mobo.

  • Cheers, got one. Now to wait for the black friday cpu prices

  • $349 now
