@Iggemo: @Iggemo you missed the part that Sony has made better exclusives. Also Cuphead is not exclusive on Xbox you can play it on the Switch and PS4.

            • +1

@Bissy: And PC, like almost every other Xbox game.

          • +6

            @Iggemo:

Sony aren't making an equivalent to Ori or Cuphead or Forza Horizon or Sea of Thieves, that's for sure.

Are we sure? PS4 had Dreams, Last Guardian, Gravity Rush, Persona 5, Bloodborne, & Until Dawn just to name a few.

            • -3

@Sandwich: Gravity Rush, Persona and Bloodborne and Until Dawn are not even first party, are they? I thought we are talking about first party games.

              • +2

@Iggemo: IDK I thought the whole crux of these discussions is about games available on select platforms. 'First, third or fifteenth party' only matters as it pertains to exclusivity, no?

              • @Iggemo: @Iggemo Gravity Rush, Persona 5, Bloodborne and Until Dawn are PlayStation first party games. What are you one about.

                • -3

@Bissy: Atlus and From Software are not Sony first-party studios are they? Do you know what first-party means?

                  • +1

@Iggemo: You know Sony can pay a company to make a game exclusive for them. That's why Bloodborne is exclusive to PlayStation because they asked and payed From Software to make it for them. They don't need to own a studio to have exclusive games. Nintendo did the same with PlatinumGames to make Astral Chain and Bayonetta 2 and 3 exclusive on the Switch. Xbox did the same with Sunset Overdrive which is made by Insomniac Games.

I think you don't know what first-party means. The studio doesn't have to owned to be first-party studio they own the IP so that means they ask any studio to make said IP. That's why Blue point can make Demon's Souls which is originally a From Software game because Sony owns to IP.

                    • +1

@Bissy: Honestly he's just grasping at straws at this point. If the game is exclusive to a specific console, who cares if they're classified as "first-party" or not. No one. Buy the console that has the games you wanna play on it.

                      • +2

@Pry: Exactly the reason I like PlayStation and Nintendo is because of the games. If Xbox can make amazing games like they said they'd then I'll support them.

                      • @Pry: Exactly. The only reason WHY i'm getting a PS5 is only for Horizon 2. I don't even have time to play any other games in reality being a parent. That new PS5 controller features should be awesome on HZD2

      • +8

The difference between xbox one and ps4 was significant, its even slimmer now between ps5 and series x. I don't know why you're spouting 'significant'. Renting games is now consumer friendly? I won't deny the price hike is pretty gross but that's par for the course of new next gen games but MS first party games are riddled with mtx and just goes to show how consumer friendly they are. They want GAAS and recurring revenue. Sony flagship titles have little if not none. Meanwhile Forza Horizon, Sea of thieves, Gears 5, Halo Infinite (lol) will need every cent from their gamepass customers just to break even. I can't wait to see the new Elder Scroll horse Armour 2022 edition.

lol @ interactive experiences. MS are stuck in 2008. Multiplayer brown shooters were all the rage in the day, but they forgot those 18-25 year olds grew up and got jobs and have little free time to sink into shooters and getting t-bagged by 15 year olds that apparently sleep with everyone's mum. Gamers were craving high quality single player games and Sony saw the market shift and delivered in spades. The market speaks for itself. Hardware doesn't mean crap since the dawn of time. If you want real hardware get a PC.

      • +4

Couldn't you put your negative spin on most games? Let's try.

All driving games are the same, you drive around and pass other cars.
All fighting games are the same, you press buttons and your character punches and kicks.
All first person shooters are the same, you move and shoot.

Wow, this is easy. Do I need to go on?

I'll be using Game Pass on my PC, it is a good deal.

        • -2

Yeah, you could. That's why you want games in different types/genres/different mechanics. That's exactly what i was saying: nearly all of Sony's first-party games are one type.

          • +6

@Iggemo: Yeah agreed, after playing The Last of Us Part 2 and Spider-Man that was my first thought.. both one type..

          • +3

@Iggemo: I agree that they do have quite a few third-person games, but the games aren't that similar.

            2020 PlayStation games:
            - Astro's Playroom - 3D Platformer
            - Dreams - Game Creation
            - Ghost of Tsushima - Action-adventure, stealth
            - Iron Man VR - Shooter
            - Major League Baseball The Show 20 - Sports
            - Nioh 2 - Action role-playing
            - Patapon 2 Remastered - Rythm game
            - Predator: Hunting Grounds - First Person shooter
            - Sackboy: A Big Adventure - Platformer
            - Spider-Man: Miles Morales - Action-adventure
            - Tilt Brush - 3D Painting
            - The Last of Us 2 - Action-adventure

So yes, 3 action-adventure games but Spider-Man: Miles Morales, The Last of Us 2, and Ghost of Tsushima are hardly the same games.

Well, i dont know, let's see. The controller.. i mean i definitely prefer offset analog sticks but i guess that could be subjective? I mean i use an Elite on the Xbox and i found it really helped with my tendonitis so hard to imagine a better controller than that.

Agree, controller is totally subjective, not even worth discussing. I think they are both significantly better ergonomically than the original controllers that came with xbox (original) and Ps1.

What isnt subjective is the Xbox is significantly more powerful for the same price.

I guess it is unknown about what real world impact that is going to make long term. There will surely be some third party games that play better. But with dynamic scaling resolution, i'm not sure most people will notice the drop in quality. Looking at the specs, I also think load times are potentailly significantly faster on PS5, which may enable them to get boosts in performance in otherways, for example by freeing up some video ram for otherstuff. Ultimately, it'll often come down to the work the developers put into it.

They arent a generation a part in performance. I think its unlikely you are going to see many titles, if any, where xbox series x is playing at 4k 60 and ps5 is playing 4k 30. I think within 2 years, 60hz will become rare again, unless in 1080p mode.

IT also has far superior back compat.

I just dont have much interest in xbox back compat. Its very consumer friendly. But while i loved the 360, there arent any 360 or Xbox (original) games i want to go back and play. I certainly would not buy a $750 console primarily for that purpose, an xbox one S would probably be a better bet. I didnt have the Xbox One (first time i didnt have all consoles), but for Xbox One games, I think the only game
        I guess it is unknown

You can also use existing peripherals.

I guess i mostly end up playing alone, i've never had many pheripherals to bring across. Plus i tend to sell my console to fund the next one. So its nice, but eh.

This is especially the case where Sony are now charging $120AU for first-party games - lol - whereas MS publishes every single game on day 1 to Game Pass for no extra cost. That is a massive, massive difference. You can get 3 years of Game Pass for the cost of one single game on Sony.

Gamepass is nice i had it on PC for a bit.

Sony has responded, with honestly a much more interesting list of games to play in my opinion, even if significnatly smaller. The downside for existing sony users, is they are ones they have probably played, being some of the biggest titles from ps4 life. PS4 games got a price rise for a bit at launch too, i remember seeing 110,120 for titles. Once, the launch period is over, regular discounting will return, and you'll pick games up again for sub80 new on release for both consoles.

I just struggle to see GamePass as a silver bullet. I think the type of person to buy a console at launch, is the sort of person who will buy new games as they come out, not just sit on a game pass sub and play third party titles when they come to the service. Xbox exclusives are few and far between. They have more studios, but it'll still be a few years before we see more than 1 exclusive a year as most studios are fairly recent acquisitions.

If you're asking which one will sell more - if that's what you mean by "wins", then yeh it'll be Sony for sure prolly 2 to 1 or maybe even 3 to 1, but it isn't the better console by a long shot.

I disagree. I think the Xbox is more compelling this time around than last gen. I think if they can start releasing some games for it, and sony doesnt have any killer first party that outweighs halo, it could be really tight this time. Which will be good for everyone.

        • +1

The huge plus on game pass is it has an amazing list of games plus gets enough brand new titles.

The thing is it saves you buying as many new games and there are some absolute gems in there.

All it needs to do is save you from buying 1 game and it's paid for itself for years.

You also have Xbox all access where you get your console to own thrown and your gamepass subscription for 45 bucks a month.
A bit of a budget friendly way of getting a new console.

          • @kasp: I guess its hard not having been in the ecosystem to really appreciate how often brand new titles appear there. I'm the kind of player, that tends to play games when they are launched, or forget about them and maybe never play them. I guess my concern for me is, i'd end up buying teh games new, rather than wait and hope third party title Y comes to the console. It's a pretty good deal if you are in to EA games though.

I suspect the subscription cost will rise substantially over this generation. Doesnt mean its a bad deal, but just seems inevitable.

You also have Xbox all access where you get your console to own thrown and your gamepass subscription for 45 bucks a month.
A bit of a budget friendly way of getting a new console.

I think you'd be nuts to takes this on an S. It's not a bad deal (doesnt seem to really cost you any extra over just paying up front and subscribing) except you are locked in to the xbox game pass for 2 years. For an avid gamer probably not a big concern.

I'm not sure what to get, financially i can afford both. However, my other half would lose it if i got both. And to be honest, with them being so similar in what they do these days, hard to justify getting both (though I would have 5 years ago).

      • +1

i whole-heartedly disagree, if you have a pc you dont need an xbox, you cant say that about the ps5. if you dont have a pc, bad luck first of all, but you could get either console and be happy, its not exactly a hard or contentious decision. if we want to talk exclusives, sony still has far more exclusives that id want to play, even if just looking at ps4 games that id want to run at higher frame rates, you can only do this with the ps5, again you cant say this about the xbox.

    • Bruce says no.

  • +6

Surprising… Called HN an hour ago to check my pre-order status of PS5 Controller and they said they "don't have any ETA w.r.t any PS5 stuff. Feel free to cancel if you find stock anywhere."

    • +12

You can feel the love in their comments

  • +1

Not sure why they don't just allow pre order on that allocation now, surely they have some idea of stock allocation?

    • +2

People were so salty about having no notice last time.

  • at 12:00am 12th November?

    • Cant confirm a time, as each company has different update systems. Abit like how Bigw werent meant to go live with the X till midnight but that went like at around 7

      • +10

I'll stay up for 3 days just to be sure

        • Id be refreshing leading up to it.

      • 7pm the night before or 7am on launch day?

  • Can you play your PS4 games (digital) on PS5?

    • Yes

    • Yes.

    • Yes, most. Maybe 99%. You can look up a PS4 here and check compatibility.

      • Thanks that’s. nice. But it also meant 1TB space is definitely not enough.

        • You can use an external HDD to play PS4 games. Infact it is recommended so you can keep the internal SDD for PS5 games exclusively.

  • +1

Does anyone know if this is launch day stock (buy at midnight and pickup at store opening) or just further preorders for an unspecified later time?

    • Will all be shipped stock, no stock will be instore pickup

      • I know you cant know this, but any guesses how long you personally think will take to ship these?

        • Going from the bigw preorders early this evening id say it will be anywhere from 5 to 12 business days

      • I actually went to Harvey Norman today (Bondi) and they said they all will be store pickups. They are receiving 42 pcs on the 12th and they all have already been pre-ordered.

    • I doubt it will even be November stock. HN and Target already sold the launch dah stock on pre-order.

  • +9

Will get the disk edition because you can sell the physical game afterwards but not the digital one

    • +5

This. I played so much borderlands 2 so when borderlands 3 got released I bought the super mega deluxe digital edition. Played 2 hours and couldn't believe how bad it was. Haven't touched it since. Really shitty that I didn't get the disk as I would have taken it back the same day.

      • Ugh it was so bad, so so bad. I tried playing co-op when a friend came over. Did not help.

    • Disc games are already appearing to be like $30-50 cheaper than the digital versions, it's gonna be super easy to make back the cost delta for the disc version.

    • +4

PS5 and PS5 digital same power on the inside.. Series S only 4 Teraflop

    • +1

Series S is a lower specc'd machine vs the Series X

The DIgital edition of the PS5 is the exact same device without a disc drive.

    • The discless has the same power as the disc version. The series S is far less powerful.

    • Yeah they did jacked up the disk drive price ie $150
Since both PS5 is virtually the same spec, minus the disc drive

On the other hand… xbox series X and S are alot more different in spec, plus it does not have the disk drive
S is lot more weaker than the X

  • Will probably buy the disc edition if they bundle with Horizon Zero Dawn 2 mid next year.

  • Harveys is selling DIGITAL VERSION ONLY!

Target are telling media outlets (like Press Start etc) that they will not have stock for sale on Launch Day
    So be very interesting

    • -1

Press Start got the listing from here. He read my original post

      • Yes and he is reporting that Target are on record that no new stock on launch day.

Also should be noted Amazon only sold one wave of PS5 and X/S so i suspect they will do another round of selling soon.

This goes against what we have heard from Target, but it’s worth a look on Thursday. We’ll keep you posted

        • Didn’t JB only sell one round. I thought it was only EB who have taken orders for post launch.

  • +3

This will get worse than pre-orders back in September since bots are now aware of the time stock will be available.

    • autobots assemble!

    • Bots would be constantly checking anywho

    • +1

Exactly, the WeChat scalpers will be all over it anything that smells of money they are all over it. Its the new Baby Formula, the rest of us dont have a hope of picking one up for xmas. Fkn bottom feeders

  • -2

I don't understand. It's $150 for a disk drive? Can you plug a USB drive in to the non disk edition?

    • it does not support external media drives (usb etc is ok of course)

      • -1

So it really is $150 for a blu ray drive?

        • +1

          A 4K Drive yes

          • +1

@jimbobaus: Yeah, I guess demand for new optical drive technology must have dropped off the face of the earth, driving prices up. Makes sense. Thanks.

        • +4

Think I saw that it’s cost $30 to include a disk drive in manufacturing. That won’t include extra shipping weight costs and other moving parts. The real reason for a big price drop is it’s a digital lock-in for the PS store. Guaranteed to make Sony more money long term than disc version.

          • -1

@Valowick: I don't see a 4k blue ray drive on sale for under us$100 or so.

            • +1

@Joker042: To manufacture, do you think Sony buys disk drives at retail prices?

It isn't $150 for a drive, it is the other way around, they take $150 off the drive version to lock you into the higher profit making digital distribution.

              • -1

@FabMan: No one who sells drives buys them at retail price. That's the way wholesale works.

                • @Joker042: That is why Huntrex mentioned $30 for a disk drive. You didn't seem to understand manufacturing costs with your following post, or even the simple reason as to the $150 difference but its probably because you enjoy being obtuse. I can't wait for your next post.

                  • -2

@FabMan: I don't see a 4k Blu Ray drive on the market for under $100 USD, the claim that the cost to fabricate is $30 is likely based on a naive look at a BOM without any appreciation for the overheads and setup costs involved in the manufacturing.

        • The real cost difference comes because Sony won't be making as much on each game sold on the physical version.

    • Not yet apparently

    • +10

PS5 is normal price, digital is subsidised price as you get ripped off with full MSRP PSN games.

      • Although if you can wait, I've gotten some incredible deals from the PSN store… Hard to wait when you're really keen for a new title though.

I got the disc version for this exact reason.

        • I agree, though you got to wait for few months.
My ps4 game library sits arounds 80. I haven't even played 2/3 of 'em. so I already got my hands full even if there are not many or any ps5 exclusive.

    • +1

No, it's $150 to not be restricted to buying from PS store. Sony could drop the price further on the digital only version because they know that they'll make it back through game sales.

    • +1

It's not JUST a disc drive.
      It's a multimedia CD-ROM drive

      • +2

Haha funny if it was just a CD-ROM Drive.
        I think you meant a BD-ROM Drive.

    • +2

You can. It won't work but you still can do it.

  • +1

If this gets more than the xbox 84 votes we will finally know

    • It’s more now :)

  • Any stores doing trade in for PS4 Pro?

    • +2

EB Games, I think I got about $350, was only expecting $330. They had double EB world bonus for games and accessories (ended today), walked away with over $550 credit (had a few decent titles). Usually sell on Facebook but buyers have been way to difficult lately, just didn't want the hassle. $350 seemed more than fair for a pro.
Also took up 2 trade offers, the Cyberpunk and COD Cold War offers seemed reasonable. They also have an assassins creed trade deal (just not into that)

      • I sold on gumtree for $420. Got the Amazon deal too!

        • +1

If that's $420 for the console and one controller, then frigging well done.
I did notice earlier prices were higher, but now on gumtree you see people asking as little as $300 without games, assume they sell for less.
          Well done!

          • @UltimateAI: Took about 4 hours too. I was very surprised. I gave 3 random games and one controller

        • Well done. I sold mine for $370 with 6 games and one controller.

Felt like I could've gotten a bit more but it was a quick sale.

      • Sold mine for $600 with extra controller back in August LOL
I bought it for $299 during an amazon sale two years ago

        • Did the same thing :)

      • I might put mine on Gumtree then. Regarding the PS4, would I just backup my save games to a usb drive? I don't have Plus.

        • Keen to know too. Presuming saving games to external USB drive is all that's needed to ensure it migrates to a ps5 or new ps4 down the track?

    • Yeah, EB - but sold out

  • +8

I'd advise everyone to get the disc version. The digital one is sad and will be a paperweight when the store goes offline.

    • +2

Disc one is much better value as well

      • +2

i hate the look of the disc version.

        • +1

          fair enough then
