    Well that's clear as mud……

  • Anybody actually used these???

  • Is it the blue layer or the white layer size of mattress in the picture

    • Mattress is the Blue Layer
      Grey/White is a base

Disclaimer: work in a mattress store (We also sell a BIB)

Memory Foam Mattresses have a place in the market for sure but when buying a BIB things to be aware of :

Memory Foam is low density and as such does not regulate heat well. You can expect a very warm mattress after a few house of sleep (if not less depening on the density)
Chinese MF is some of the worst quality around. Koala and a few others use Aussie Foam (Dunlop Foam) which is a better density rating and worth the extra $$$.
Memory Foam is the most expensive part of a mattress (traditional style) so if you are paying a few hundred its clear you would not be getting decent quality.

Also.. if you have any issues with pain, aches, play sport, go to the gym and you want a mattress that will support you then a BIB mattess is the worst choice you can make. They are comfortable sure, but that is all they are. They offer ZERO support

You get what you pay for when you buy a mattress.
10 year warranty or not (they all do 10 years these days) the warranty is not going to cover support or heat issues only defects in the foam and how many defects can you expect from a piece of foam cut in a square and wrapped?

    • BIB?

Was about to purchase one, but now I'm not so sure. Anybody bought & used one and can comment on how they found it?

      • Bed in a box.

      • I have bought the king size and it has been around 2 months now, pretty happy with it. Mine is a black one not sure about memory foam though.

I am using a single mattress of the similar model to this one - gel memory foam. It has been great so far and is very comfortable, far exceeding my expectations. It replaced a store bought mattress from earlier in the year and I am much happier with this. As per other comments, it does get hotter but that can be solved with less layers.

    • You sure Koala are still using Dunlop Foam? I had the impression when they stopped making the mattresses in Australia they were going to change the foam material? From what I understood, shipping the foam to China to have stuffed in a mattress and then sent back is too expensive.

      • I am not so sure now lol.
The bed ins box we sell is Dunlop foam and my understanding is the same supplier was supplying koala. It’s def possible they gave switched given the have a factory in China manufacturing all their furniture now.

Is there a particular type of mattress that you would recommend for back support?

      • +2

If you suffer from chronic pain then honestly a traditional firm style mattress is going to be your best bed. You can get softish firm ones that give you plenty of comfort but also support. Pocket spring mattresses tend to keep your spine straight as you sleep as the springs work independently and depress at different depths depending on your weight in each part of your body if that makes sense.

        • It looks to me like there are bed in a box mattresses that also include pocket springs. Do these avoid the perils of a BIB mattress?

    • Appreciate your thoughts. Could you suggest what those who “have any issues with pain, aches, play sport, go to the gym and want a mattress that will support them” should buy? Cheers

      • See comment above.

You can pick up a decent supportive mattress for around $700-$800 if you know where to look :)

Could you help those of that don't know where to look by pointing us in the right direction.

@BarginHunter: Most of the big stores (Forty, Snooze,Bedshed) stock a basic pocket spring mattress for around $1000
these are mostly in house brand mattresses (Madison, Insignia etc) there is quite a lot of margin on them and should easily be gotten for $800 ish

Some smaller retailers also stock these mattresses (again with different names) for the same price.

Sleepmaker make a connected coil support mattress called a M101 which is around $750 in a QB
Sleepmaker also have a Chiro mattress for around $1000
These are both Connected Coil but are "miracoil" which means they contain a support coil
the downside of a connected coil is if you share the bed you will risk waking your partner if you roll over during the night.

So TLDR: In house Pocket Springs can be gotten for around $800
or look for the Sleepmaker Support Ranges (coil ) for around same price.

            • @jimbobaus: Thanks, what are your thoughts on some of the bed in box mattress' that choice recommends?

              • +3

@BarginHunter: Honestly i do not put much weight in choice recommendations.
the major manufacturers (Sealy, Sleepmaker etc) do not submit their mattresses for choice anymore as Choice expect them to pay many thousands of dollars to carry a "choice recommends" label on their products.

Saying that Bed in a Box mattresses have a place, Koala is very good but as mentioned they do get very hot.

The quality of the foam is high but the problem with foam is by its very nature it gets hot. They can treat it which many do but this never counters the heat issues.

To give you an example the traditional mattress industry has a return rate of around 2%
The bed in a box industry is sitting on over 40%

They are comfortable for sure.. but support is non existent even in the ones with "springs"
There is an old adage, "what price on a great nights sleep?".
If you want support then a traditional mattress is the way to go and you can certainly find ones in any price range.

Bed in a box imho is great as a spare bedroom bed, Guest Bed or holiday house bed etc
Honestly they are no good as an everyday bed… and this is from soneone who sells them

(and someone who owned a Koala Mattress)

                • +1

@jimbobaus: I'm not surprised you don't like Choice as you work in a mattress retailer who Choice exposed as intentionally stifling competition by having the same mattresses rebranded in each store so us consumers can't compare. This elimination of competition means prices are way higher than they need to be.

I can see you are still helping the discussion though.

                  • @hen dawg: I personally do not hate choice.
I have issues with their so called impartiality, they have to make money i get that but they hold manufactures to ransom (not just bedding)

the claims made by choice were very valid at the time they were made, however they blanket accused the entire industry of something that was based on a response to one retailers actions.

This retailer had requested all items be "exclusive" and given their buying power the manufactures complied this meant retailers were given different products so in turn this meant nothing was the "same" in two stores but default.

The industry has changed, if you ask a retailer they will supply comparative products (this is called XXX at This store.. etc) but as you can imagine its not widely promoted (a failing imho)
We never hide the fact that mattress AAAA at our store is similar (it is never exactly the same) to BBBB at another store.
No two mattreses sold in two different retailers are the same they do literally change them in some way so its more than just a name change.

I appreciate you seeing i am trying to help, i am.
I honestly feel the industry has improved but the stigma still remains.

    • Also.. if you have any issues with pain, aches, play sport, go to the gym and you want a mattress that will support you then a BIB mattess is the worst choice you can make. They are comfortable sure, but that is all they are. They offer ZERO support

Yes I am 100% behind this statement. As a (before lockdown) regular gym goer with mild back issues the BiB was relegated to the guest room within a few weeks.

I think for small children who will outgrow them and are basically jelly they will be fine. But for adult men who work hard or have pre-existing issues I don't think I'll ever risk a BiB again.

Thought this was just a topper?

I bought one from the last sale, not this model but the one with pocket coils. I've been using this for a few months so far:

    • It is comfortable, especially since I am a side sleeper. it sinks down just enough for me.
    • It is on the warm side. Wear a hoodie to bed and you'll end up with some demon grilling you at 3AM
    • Why do you sleep with hoodie on?? Don’t tell me you sleep with your shoes on as well.:)

      • Sometimes it's cold and I'm tired lol.
No shoes in the house, let alone on beds haha

Lavender fragrance? I thought that fragrance only appealed to Grandmothers… I'd get sick of smelling that.

  • I purchased the Gel Memory Foam mattress from previous sale in July and been very happy with comfort. They are a firm and yes suspect it will be hot but to date has been ok I purchased the 25cm and wish I had opted for the 31cm. The Mattress is very light compared to my old one and moves on base a bit more. Much easier to make the bed though

I would recommend them from experience to date. I would purchase again.. debating on whether I should buy spare now for 2nd room

Only issue I had was delivery was over a week and the communication was not the best :(

  • Has anyone tried their pocket spring mattress?
At $240 it'd be hard for it to not be worth it.

  • Thanks ordered the pocket sprint latex been looking for a deal like this forever.

  • any king?
