Loved Skyrum, can't wait for the sequel on series x.

  • Thanks. I did not know it was free since April. I am very happy that I got a license key now, maybe I can use it for discount upgrade price.

    • You might be able to get an update from Luminar 3 to 4, but you won't be able to transfer your updated images from 3 to 4. They changed the architecture of the product, and didn't provide an import function. The company is really pushing their Luminar AI product at the moment.

  • What do people use it for? Much advantage over Lightroom?

Luminar is a photo editing software just like Lightroom. it is pretty similar to Lightroom in many ways with a few key differences:

Luminar's has a few more editing options than Lightroom, such as layers, which can only be found in Photoshop. As a result Luminar is somewhat of a hybrid between Lightroom and Photoshop. Luminar also has a lot of Ai photo editing options that allow 1 click edits and things such as sky replacement (however I think sky replacement might only be limited to Luminar 4). 1 click editing is fast and convenient but I find you almost get a better edit doing it yourself but it's a good place to start. Luminar is also a one time purchase (or free for this version) opposed to Lightroom which is only available as a subscription.

Lightroom is much better at photo cataloguing and even though Lightroom may have less editing options they are more precise than Luminar's options. I find that Lightroom's new colour grading options and sliders tend to be above and beyond Luminar 3's alternatives. If you get the Adobe Photography Bundle you get Lightroom Creative Cloud, Lightroom Classic and Photoshop. Lightroom CC is really useful because you can edit photos on your phone/tablet as well as your computer and it's synced to the cloud. Since it is a paid subscription you get all of it's updates for free unlike Luminar where you have a buy the latest version if you want the newest features. If you bought all of Luminar's latest products when they get released you would probably end up paying the same, if not more than a Lightroom subscription.

Having used both I would recommend Lightroom but that's probably because I've used it far more than Luminar. It's honest a bit of a case of horses for courses; both offer similar features and you can get similar/identical results from both of them. If you are only looking for a free photo editing software than getting this is a no brainer. If you are serious about photo editing I'd recommend buying a Lightroom subscription for a month to see if you prefer it over Luminar.

  • Luminar AI appears to be a different product than Luminar 3. Removed reference to "Ai" in title.
