Seems like a pretty good deal especially for new 11th Gen Intel processor in the laptop. Any thoughts? Also i7 version https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-laptops/new-inspiron-15… for $1224

Tiger Lake(11th gen) is more like a paper tiger. The engineering sample Intel sent around made it look better than it actually is. Actual laptops that are available for purchase perform worse than the equivalent 10th gen in some circumstances, based on reviews. The only thing this laptop has going for it is the Nvidia 330 graphics, because Intel Xe graphics underperforms. You are overpaying for a quadcore laptop, with low quality screen and battery. You can now get 6 and 8 core laptops at a similar price point with better chassis, screens and battery.

    • Xe graphics seems about the same as MX 330?

What you posted is based on the Intel engineering sample, which is running at a much higher TDP. Actual laptops we can buy have CPUs that are thermally constrained to 15w, otherwise you won't have decent battery life. If you want to see actual real world performance of Intel Xe, watch the UFD tech review of the 11th gen XPS 13 and see Fortnite stutter around the minute 5:50 mark.

        • Notebookcheck is very thorough. Their 1165G7 asus had peak power draw the same as a 4700U laptop. 58W they measured. Under load the Intel was actually lower than the 4700U. About 30W vs 45W.

I'd take the performance numbers from their benchmarks to be fairly representative of a consumer chip.

          • @incipient: You are comparing Intel's top spec CPU to AMD's mid tier. Well if you look at Notebookcheck review of an actual laptop, like the Asus ZenBook 14 UX425E, with the i7 Tiger Lake. It actually falls more in line with the numbers that the new Dell XPS 13 experiences and not the Intel engineering sample. They actually state under the Processor heading

"Raw multi-thread performance is about 20 to 30 percent slower than the Ryzen 5 4500U according to CineBench benchmarks. In fact, it's barely any faster than the older Core i7-1065G7 that our i7-1165G7 is supposed to replace. "

Gaming Performance of a laptop, you and I can buy, is also slower than than the engineering sample for Xe graphics. It looks like it gets beaten in every game they tested ,excluding the FFXV benchmark, by a Ryzen APU or Nvidia MX250. It only does well in synthetics.

    • From your previous links, fortnite does seem to have massive issues with xe for some reason. Lots of other games perform much better.

    • May I ask what laptops for example?

  • Just wait for the 5000 series AMD laptops. With 6000 series mobile graphic chips. Intel will be on its knees begging for mercy.

Will be some time towards the end of next year. Depending on yields and other demand for 5nm wafers. If you can wait, waiting will always get you something faster.

I would recommend finding out from Dell which screen this comes with. there are 2 non-touch options for this model:
    - FHD 220nit 45% NTSC
    - FHD 300nit 72% NTSC

I sure hope it's the second. Dell doesn't specify which is installed in this model.

otherwise this is promising, with 2 NVMe slots.

      • FHD 220nit 45% NTSC

      ouch

      • +2

yes that's a bullshit screen. not sure why this option even exists. if it's not error in specifications, it's an error in humanity, to be corrected by God

        lord have mercy.

Australia always get lower battery and crappy screens for sure!
