Rok Espresso Maker $54.80 Delivered (Was $269) @ Alternative Brewing via Catch Marketplace

940

I have been using this machine for a while and love it. Ideal for camping or a nice present for any coffee aficionados out there.

The ROK Manual Espresso Maker is an electricity free method of preparing an espresso.

This particular model has been re-engineered to deliver twice the performance of the original model; it has a new glass composite chamber & plunger design that delivers better extraction and crema.

YOU ARE IN CONTROL

Feel the experience. You drive the finely engineered gearing that lowers the piston to generate the pressure to extract the coffee oils to create the perfect espresso. Designed by one of the UK's leading product innovators, there's over 10 years of 'know-how' built into every ROK. See it hands-on here.

NO ELECTRICITY, NO EXPENSIVE PODS

There is no lock-in to expensive pods - you choose the coffee. [Based on two espressos a day you could save over 300* a year compared to buying Nespresso capsules. And you won't be binning 730g of aluminium**]. Plus the ROK itself uses no electricity. Just add hot water and enjoy the hands on experience. Order yours here

TAKE YOUR TIME, BECOME A HOME BARISTA

Allow some time to master the ROK. It's not got a manufacturer's preset button - you are the settings. There are so many variables to a perfect espresso from the freshness and fineness of the grind to maintaining temperature of the water. The ROK is like the finest pen in the world, but it relies on you being able to write! Experiment. Some people get crema right out of the box. Some don't. Once mastered you will be truly amazed at the results you can achieve.

The complete kit comes with everything you need to make all the coffees you love. Espressos, Lattes, Americanos, Cappuccinos.

Package includes:

  • 10 yr warranty

      • You props wont use it a lot. But i personally like doing different brewing method from time to time. so this is good to add to my collection :P (you could do the same thing with a french press but this one is cold drip so its slightly different)

        • Price is back up, but a steal when it costs the same as entry Hario cold dripper. Hoping they honour it.

          • +1

@Baebs: That one is a cold brew, you soak the coffee instead of dripping the water down. But yeah will see if they honour it lol

          • @Baebs: wow, how much was it on sale?

            • @rlay3: Can't edit the comment unfortunately but it was $45.80

              • @Baebs: Thanks. That is an insane price. I would have snapped it up, love a cold drip coffee.

        • +1

yeah I get it, and for the price it would be cool to have but I'm trying to buy a house at the moment and honestly like in general I don't think I have enough room in a kitchen for all these appliances lol

it does say you can make like a leader and store it for 2 weeks in the fridge

  • I have an order confirmation on my email…

  • +3

I’ve got ones of the original (rev 1) ones. I bought it on gumtree second hand, and used it heaps at first. These make decent espresso, but it can be hard to get right. After a bit of practice, you can get a really good extract. The build is really solid.

I really like the idea of a manual press, without any need for electricity, or fancy design and materials. And it feels like there’s more of your own ability going into the coffees you make. Not like a machine you press a button on. With these, you control the pressure and time, it can be really rewarding. But you do need to pre-heat it by putting hot water through it before putting in ground coffee. There are some good guides online.

But mine has sat in the cupboard for a year or more now, I use a moka express these days without steaming milk. It’s stronger and kind of easier to use. I have a stovetop milk steamer but it’s slow to get going and clean up.

    • +1

I want one of these as you could do cold espresso with these manual machine as well. Ive already got an espresso machine but wouldnt mind playing with manual espresso a bit.

  • +1

I bought one second hand for $50 and it’s been great for camping. The Rok milk frother is pretty useless so we froth milk (after heating in a pot) using a French press.

    • +1

French press milk texturising is da bomb!

    • Unreal to take camping, agree, I hiked around Wilsons Prom with it in my backpack LOL

  • +5

    Nice post Op.
However this is alternative brewing we're talking about.. I highly doubt they are going to honour this error.

Still, Good luck to everyone that managed to order one 👍

    • Yep, there's a reason why they're banned from posting on ozbargain.

      • +2

Woah, Had no idea they were banned here.
I do have always found their product rrp to be suspicious.

Just speculating: If they cancel everyone's order here, i can't help but suspect this is all a lame marketing ploy.

        • I remember wondering the same thing why their posts suddenly dropped off. Apparently mods caught them sockpuppeting.

  • +1

Darn! Miss it. Just off work from the hospital to welcome such disappointment! lol

    • +3

There's nothing worse than missing out on a bargain that you 100% would have jumped on. I feel ya. Because I wanted one too :(

      • +4

Then you get the pump of endorphins when you see everyones getting refunds because switch and bait trololol.

        • Here comes the refunds.

  • +1

Ive had mine for 6 years and has been around Aus and then some. Would definitely recommend it and a bur hand grinder if you spend a lot of time on the road. 1 kg of beans and 1kg of milk powder lasted us ages in desert.

  • Wow now $354 to make up for the loss they made on all your orders

    • +1

      Different seller.

  • Damn this was a bargain! Would've gotten it but saw it too late.

  • +2

My brother had one for a while and really disliked it. Said it was very difficult to get consistent results, has a steep learning curve and an annoyingly small group head.

Purely anecdotal though, I'm sure they're great in the right hands, just know what you're signing up for.

    • +1

You really need good beans and need to grind them yourself to get perfect results. If you don't find that right setting I agree will be inconsistent. I've been using for 5 years and it is fantastic, but it did take me a few months to work it out.

    • +2

I have ROK v1 for a few years. Except for fresh beans and proper grinder you also need to work out right workflow. A semiautomatic machine does things for you. For manual espresso maker you need to program yourself to right workflow from preheat the chamber and how/when to press the levers, etc.. It can get consistent results.

      • Totally agree. I used to be a barista, and use a machine that has no programming so I know exactly what you mean.

My post was more aimed at people who might be buying this without knowing much about home espresso and underestimating what they're getting into.

  • Now listed at $354 … wtf?

    • +1

      Yeah by a different seller

  • +1

Wow, this is cheap. I've been using one of these for 4 years now. If paired with a Nespresso milk frother and good coffee beans/grinder these are unreal. Make a coffee the same as what you would get at your favourite cafe. Good find, would have picked up another if I had have seen this.

  • +2

I see some people impulse buy. I hope you guys actually use this and don't leave it locked up in the cupboard

    • I have a few coffee lover friends, so it would make an awesome gift idea

    • I'll probably be displaying it on the kitchen counter..

      • Will be happy to take it off your hands if it doesn't fit your counter

  • +1

I have a button that does it for me

    • My wife has a mind controlled hubby as well…

      • I dont have a wife ;(

  • Anyones order move?

    • +1

      nothing here
my guess is that they're figuring out how should they go about cancelling all the orders

  • +6

That cold drip is now $20, surely it's worth it at this price?

    • (profanity), got one at 50

    • Don't even like cold drip really (prefer immersion cold brew), but at $20, I'll give it shot! :)

    • Did see it for $19.85. they just got rid of it from COTD Marketplace.

    • my order just got cancelled

      reason: "out of stock"

  • Just noticed there's no actual PayPal charge for this in my paypal overview :/

  • Got an email saying my parcel has been delayed.
Credit card has also been charged

  • +1

    R-r-r-r-refunded!
    Reason: Out of stock

  • +2

    Refunded… "out of stock"
a bit rubbish. at least admit to a mistake.
    won't buy from alternative again.

    • The listing clearly said something like "Hurry, 11 units left". Surely they can't use "out of stock" as a valid reason?

      • You underestimate this store. My next bet is that they will use the "price error" card.

  • refund… not happy.

  • Refund lol

  • Got my refund email just now

  • yay got refund!!

  • +1

Just have a chat to them on their actual website. They have plenty of stock there

  • Was emailed that it was out of stock, still in stock on AB website. Spoke with a sales assistant that blamed catch's inventory sync.

  • I understand that it was most likely a pricing error but that isn't my fault. Whether it was the fault of Catch's website or Alternative Brewing, it should be honoured by the respective party. I know I won't be looking at purchasing from either company in the near future.

    • If you were the small to medium business owner here, you'd think differently - and probably do just as Alt Brewing have done!

It doesn't need to be honoured if it's clearly an error, and they would lose a packed if they fulfilled all the orders at $55. It's obviously well below cost price, and at seller's discretion whether or not to honour it.

What is a bit s$%t is they (or Catch - whoever is responsible for the display) have pulled the 'out of stock' card. Better practice is, 'sorry, we stuffed up - have a $20 voucher code' - or something like that!

  • +1

Saved myself $54.80. Had a feeling it won't be honoured.

  • got the good ol out of stock refund too

  • +4

    Back in stock! $54.80

    • lol wtf

    • anyone going to bite?

      • +3

The wise Aaliyah once said if at first you don't succeed…

  • +1

Party is over lol, jsut got my refund

  • +3

Zzz refund came in this morning.. I've actually really wanted one of these for the longest time..

  • +5

I appreciate you touching base, I am very sorry for any inconvenience as I have looked into your order further. It does appear that we have experienced a stock issue and are sadly not able to fulfil the shipment of the goods as this coffee maker is out of stock. Catch has had an issue with the API listing and is now pulling data from an alternative product sadly.

Due to this, we have proceeded to process a full refund on the order, Your understanding is greatly appreciated and I apologise once again.
    The Alternative Brewing team

Are these guys really using the word API and expect non-technical customers to understand? Or is it used to deter customers from asking more questions? Either way, Alternative brewing is disgusting.

  • -1

There's only really one way to stop this kind of switch and bait behaviour, and that's just to write complaints.

    • What are they switch and baiting with? They said its a price error and refunded.

      • I thought they said out of stock?

    • If you know this product, you'll have known it was a price error when you placed the order - but doesn't hurt to be in it to win it.

I didn't buy this time - was too late to the party - but I have been here before.

      • Yeah probably everyone thinks it's price error, but email says out of stock, which is clearly not the same thing as price error. Why can't they just admit it's price error?

        • If they say it's a stock issue, then surely you can request that they keep your money, and you'll wait for your item and accept it on backorder!
