                          I have

                          • @elektron: Wow, only a month, excellent šŸ˜‚

                            • @brendanm: I thought your issue was that there's no local warranty? Trolling much?

                              • @elektron: It isn't a proper warranty. Enjoy your phone mate, you are obviously happy with it.

Am in the same situation as you, except with an S9+, which are still very capable phones. I was hoping by now Apple would have finally included a decent size battery in the Iphone 12 but it looks like a pretty standard battery life (and even a reduction in battery size from the 11), nothing really special. I might hold out for another year or wait for the max version.

      • +1

Yeah unfortunately nothing wow'd me and I was left a little disappointed when the 12's were revealed - not a bigger battery, no 120Hz, no USB-C, no charger included, no fingerprint (in the age of masks I think the face ID may struggle).

I know the max won't have any of those either, so I am really on the fence.
I think a big reason I haven't just bought an S20 or something is because I want to experience the iPhone-Mac integration. Maybe I should do some research into that first.

      • I have an s9+ too. I just watched a "day in the life" video on YouTube re the 12 pro, and it looks like the battery isn't that great, probably because of the 5g antennas. The camera looks dope though. Then again, my s9+ is still functioning almost as well as the day I got it, surprisingly, so I think I'll hold out til at least March 2021 and see what Samsung has got cooking.

      • +1

Tbh, I bought a s20+ after the s9+. If it wasn't so cheap on the telstra deals, I would have regretted it. It's not a massive step up. I know it's not an iPhone12 but it's still some perspective.

        • Well that is my other alternative at the moment. Although I may have gone for the S20 Ultra. But then I found about the inferior Aussie Exynos chip and I figured I should try Apple once in my life. So you don't feel like there is a huge difference between the S20 and S9?

          • +1

@JoKing: It depends what you do I guess. I don't game, I browse the internet, message and call, use normal life apps like banking, snap chat, maps etc.

Can't say I notice any difference. The battery is better than a 2 year old phone that's for sure.

    • 5G is still in development stage and isn't available everywhere. By the time 5G becomes the new normal, Apple is going to come out with 6G and say "6G is the future, upgrade now".

This is the first time Apple has actually kept pace with a network launch. They were years behind competitors on implementing 3G and 4G. They are still up to a year behind android flagships on 5g

        • Yeah, my LG V50 is 5G - although I'm not even sure Boost has 5G access yet, and I don't go anywhere that has a 5G deployment yet.

    • +11

Speaking from experience, Apple's Continuity works very well.

There's lots, but I use these ones all the time:

      • Instant Hotspot - connect to your iPhone hotspot without passwords
      • Handoff - web / email / notes / etc. on iPhone, continue on Mac, vice-versa
      • Universal Clipboard - copy and paste between the lot
      • Make and receive calls on all devices
      • AirDrop is awesome - send stuff across to nearby devices

Even better: zero setup other than devices all use the same Apple ID ā€” except AirDrop of course, which you can use between any Apple devices.

      • +1

Apple can do everything except put a calculator and weatherapp on iPads

    • +4

Do you find that 4G is not good enough generally? I never really understood the hype with 5G.

I have 50/50 megabit per sec up/down connection (translate to about 5-6MB/s download speed) at home and found it plenty fast for everything I do. 4k Netflix streaming, game, whatever else.

My 4G on my iPhone X gives me 138/30 megabit per sec up/down connection which is blazing fast and more than I'll ever need in terms of speed. What are people doing on their phones that would require 5G over 4G?

      • +5

5G is a textbook example of gold-plated infrastructure. The telecoms and the phone hardware manufacturers have colluded collaborated to entice people to upgrade and justify an even higher price of new phones when the sales started falling, upgrade cycles got longer and new features got more gimmicky with each new model cycle.

      • +2

I'm keen as a bean to get 5G for home internet, the Optus plans area already faster and cheaper than NBN

        • Fair point. The NBN prices will also drop when that happens though. Also pleased that I don't have to pay for the 5G network as a tax payer.

          • +1

@elektron: Gov has already approved the NBN to raise prices. lol

            • +2

@Charity: If you look into the original NBN pricing model, it was always designed to be increased over time. That basis is and always has been absurd for a technology based product.

'… it has proven a major problem for NBN Co, whose entire economic model is predicated on customers continuing to pay higher and higher prices for their broadband.'

I dont think you can buy the 11pro any more… I have one and love it!!! I have also just pre-ordered the 12 pro. The camera quality is amazing and is the support group.

    • Well there are companies other than Samsung…

    • I have a macbook pro and don't see the benefits in having a iphone too. My photos show up in my macbook pro, that's the only thing I think of that is useful. Google Photos is also available which I prefer because it's free!

    • Buy stuff you want to use and what you get out of it, who cares what everyone think
2K for me for a phone every 5 years is not even worth sweating for it
just one CBA dividend cheque can buy 2 or 3 phones each year but I don't upgrade each year, I do once every 4-5 years.

I am simple, I buy something I like, reliable and forget about it for 4-5 years until the next one come along.
iPhone vs X vs Y is just a waste of time

  • +1

Because, I want to buy a phone but its very stressful now a days,
I want to buy Iphone 12 pro but thinking that if I will buy now then next year it will launch with 120hz as well as bigger battery. But, I do not want to spend the money again. So confused from last one week.

also thinking to buy S20 FE now and then Iphone next year if it will have more features.

    • +2

I think if you have a decent phone maybe hold out until next year for some good improvements to the iPhone. Don't spend money buying a S20 FE just as a filler phone. If you want a filler phone then get something way cheaper

      • just buy it (iph12) and be happy with it, he/she should at least last 3 years until to upgrade again

    • +9

Next year's iPhone will be better than the current model? No kidding. If you want a phone and can afford it, buy it. But asking us whether it's worth buying now or waiting for features that may or may not be in a phone 12 months from now, is pointless speculation.

    • -2

You were trying to chase a dream (you got the Apple bug)… maybe you are starting to wake up? or maybe not?

    • +2

Explain the stress, why is such a trivial thing stressful? If i didn't want to play around with the lidar for development i'd probably still be on the X.

    • +5

You could just sell the 12 Pro when the 13 Pro comes out. You must know someone who would want it. Yeah you'll end up out of pocket a few hundred dollars over two years but you've only got so many years of life left so having the world's best phone for just a few hundred dollars extra a year isn't so bad. When the 13 Pro comes out your 12 Pro will be the second best in the world, that's going to feel like a kick to the stomach when the Jones's show off their new 13 Pros and you're still using your vintage 12 Pro.

      • Not to mention you will have an extra year of Apple warranty and a brand new phone with the features you want!

        • +1

And an extra year of Apple TV+.

  • +5

Used to have IPhone, now with Huawei P30 Pro and love it :)

    • +1

I bought a Huawei Mate 20 Pro when it came out 2 years ago, and it's been pretty good! It's also the only phone I've ever managed to break the screen on though - something I managed to do just last month.

I'm really not looking forward to replacing a phone I just finished paying off with a brand new one, especially when a $1K price tag has become standard on a new phone. I've also found a lot of the apps that Huawei runs with to be a little clunky, or just generally lacking the polish that you'd expect form a smartphone. It has plenty of nifty features and battery life was amazing when I first got it, but I'm pretty keen to go back to a more mainstream Western brand now.

I fully intended to cop the downgrade in a few areas and buy one of the iPhone SE 2020 editions as they seem pretty legit, but reading about the ceramic glass on the iPhone 12 has sort of swung me in light of my recent phone trauma. Seriously I do not want to break another screen…

      • -1

Where can we buy this new from? Legit wanna get it.
(Preferably the Blue or twilight colours)

        edit - Regular mate20

  • Because I am an apple ! Not human….

  • +3

I will cause I prefer iOS to android

    • +17

      name checks out

    • +3

That doesn't mean you have to buy the new model though.

  • +8

120hz aka battery drainer. Everyone i know that has a 120hz screen switches it off lol.

    • +1

And always on 5g kills most androids too.

      • +1

90hz is enough an upgrade for me, nfi why they wanna rush it

    • -3

Doesn't the older iPhones with 120hz dynamically tern it on, like when scrolling webpages or app pages? But leave it off, like when you're watching a TV show or just have the music app open or something.

      • iPad Pro's do - not iPhones yet (sadly…)

        • +1

Didnā€™t some older iPhones get it? I skipped the last few generations because I was happy with my SE. Iā€™m using an old XS now.

          • @AustriaBargain: never had it

            • @RobBoss: Iā€™m probably thinking of my iPad Pro.

              • @AustriaBargain: Yes, only in the iPad Pro. To be honest when I first got it I thought it would be amazing, but turns out I don't really notice it, as in, when it dynamically drops down to 60hz I don't even notice it. A smooth 60hz or above is what matters the most I reckon.

                • @cheng2008: I think Iā€™d notice if it was gone. When scrolling through the app icons.

                  • @AustriaBargain: Do you thoughļ¼Ÿ

                    • @cheng2008: Maybe not notice consciously, but I'd feel the difference. I think.

                      • @AustriaBargain: IMO subconsciously I feel it, but really I donā€™t feel it consciously and I donā€™t think Iā€™d miss it to be honest if itā€™s minimum 60hz. only place where it really matters is gaming imo.

    • +1

I've got a 120Hz screen on my phone - literally one of the main reasons I purchased it.

Yes, the battery does deplete a little quicker than otherwise, but it can still last more than a day between charges.

  • I might buy the Pro Max. I want the Mini, but I kinda need a portable camera. My only problem is I'll have to buy bigger trousers, or start carrying a messenger bag or something. BUT that's better than carrying around a damn camera bag everywhere.

    • messenger bag? link

      • +1

Like a satchel bag you wear across your shoulder behind your back.

    • Only if you didn't have a toadstool you wouldn't feel the need to buy a phone that required you to get larger trousers.

      • Actually that is a genuine concern for me as well. But only because you asked. Just call me Earth Anaconda Jim.

  • +3

id like the 12 mini to replace my 1st gen SE. but given the massive price, and that its probably gonna have an underwhelming battery, im having a look at cheap android alternatives

picked up a 2nd hand mate 20 pro, but the size takes some getting used to. its just tricky to hold with the width, curved screen and body, tiny bezels, and generally slipperiness. keep touching the edge of the screen. do like the dual sim and massive battery etc. also saving $1k is nice
but unless this thing gets comfy to use, or I find a cheap samsung galaxy, i might just end up sticking with my old SE for another year. or maybe jump on the 12 mini
why are there no other small phones around damn

gonna pick up some vinyl wrap from officeworks just to give the back some texture and grip. basically cut out my own phone skin. anyone done this?

    • how much did you pay for the used mate 20 pro? i'm looking for a phone for mom.
how about sony? their new phone is 1 handed phone.

      • about $400. pretty good phone so far, just kinda big

sony is good, I used to have z3 compact and really liked it. the new one is strangely tall, but looks okay
problem is that its about the same price as a new iphone 12 mini, but over a few years they will depreciate very differently.

    • Any reason you're not keen on upgrading to the SE 2020? Might not feel like an 'upgrade' I suppose.

I have a mate 20 Pro, have enjoyed using it for 2 years, but I finally smashed the screen something horrid and I'm now thinking seriously about copping the price of the iPhone 12 for the ceramic glass :/ I just don't trust myself

      • The new SE is okay, but I was never too into the design before so it feels a little weird getting it now that it's past its prime
But the bigger issue is the battery life. The 2 things I would upgrade in my current phone are the camera (new one seems okay here) and battery, both of which are okay but its too easy to hit their limits. Speed still isn't an issue, because it's clearly not made for gaming etc.
The SE should be a simple and capable phone that does all the basics well and lets low-end owners not think or care about how they use it. Which should mean being a bit lax about keeping it juiced up.

It would have been much more appealing to see a high efficiency chip (or bigger battery) over a high speed chip. Everyone goes on about how its crazy powerful etc, yet its clearly aimed at people who are not after the latest and greatest. And maybe high speed now will equal longevity later, but that becomes 5 years of reaching for a charger every time you want to use maps or the camera.

So you can probably guess why I might have gone for the Mate 20 pro. Pretty good so far, getting used to it.

    • The small pixel might do it for you? I also hate massive phones. Still very happy with my OnePlus5 tbh.

  • +4

Missing iphone SE original size… hoping to grab 12 mini.

    • +27

      "I don't like it so it's garbage"

    • +3

When you have money you might change your opinion.

    • Why would you flush it then burn it? Wonā€™t it be soggy??

    • Its a good product…never had any software issues. Ever.

  • +6

because i have a lot of apple products already and have spent money on apps over the years and donā€™t really want to have to start from scratch.

Saying that, i find the whole ā€œandroid vs appleā€ argument a waste of time. Iā€™m with Apple because i always have been and iā€™m kinda ingrained into their architecture and iā€™m okay with that

    • +21

Android users: lol apple sucks. Overpriced and my android can do everything an iPhone can and do it better!
Apple users: I don't even think about you.

      • +6

Apple users don't think about others cos ignorance is bliss

        • It's easy to ignore fandroids and their dribble.

    • i have a lot of apple products already and have spent money on apps over the years and donā€™t really want to have to start from scratch.

Yep, thatā€™s how they get you

      • +4

To be fair, I have the same on Android. I know if I go to iOS my App Store purchases won't come over.

        • +2

I suppose with Android, you still have a lot of options in terms of other Android phones. Unlike Apple.

Though I'm happy sitting in Apple's walled garden.

        • +1

True, but the Apple hardware ecosystem is also much more closed and expensive.

    • -2

Slave mentality. Basically saying I'm a slave and I'm ok with it.

      • +1

not at all - itā€™s absolutely my decision. I simply prefer Apple products over the android/windows architecture. I used to have an Android phone years ago and I just prefer iPhone. I donā€™t begrudge or judge anyone else for making whatever choice they have.

Claiming anyone makes a choice like that is a ā€œsLaVE MenTaLiTyā€ is a lazy argument. People make decisions based on their needs and preferences.

        • Lol i agree. Was so stuck changing every 6 months with android phones (mainly Samsung) and funny enough, now having an iPhone XR for 2 years made me think about being a stupid idiot changing phones every 6 months when a phone works fine, you donā€™t even care anymore šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

  • +1

A few answers about having other Apple devices which makes sense. However I took the question to be more about the 12 specifically vs say the now reduced 11 or the SE.

  • +1

I am waiting for my iphone 6s plus to die. It still functions perfectly, so no new iphone for me!!

But only have had apple iphones, 3, 4, 5 and then 6 and the 6 never died. I have an apple watch, there is no way I'd ever consider buying a non apple phone.

    • and got ios14 should last

    • How is the battery life for your 6s?

My 6s was straight up giving me only half a day's worth of juice being 5 years old. So I was kinda caved in an bought the 12 Pro now. (Granted, it's probably the newer iOS which is killing the battery)

      • +1

Batteries degrade over time. My 6s prob only last half a day too.

  • +1

Well, I've been waiting for a small phone like iPhone SE, so 12 mini is perfect.

  • +8

Stuck deep in the Apple ecosystem. That being said, OLED is my biggest reason since I moved from an iPhone 11. As both an android and Apple user, I am frustrated with how underwhelming iPhone upgrades has been though. They add some magnets on the back, call it "MagSafe" and people act like this is some high tech innovation from the 30th century.

    • I know wealthy people who have realisd they're fully embedded/invested, paying shit load for cloud

They call it a marriage, they can't get out

      • It's actually not that hard to get out. It just requires a bit of effort, and most people are lazy or have poor technical skills

  • +2

No one (in their right mind).
It is not a "true" 5G… we do not have the infrastructure for the mm-5G.

If you buy, the device would be superseded in 12 months.

    • Couldn't you technically argue that the device is superseded every 12 months anyway, with the release of the next iPhone?

Are there plans for mm to reach Aus? I wasn't sure. Will that happen within a year? The current sub 6 5G is still being rolled out so I wonder if they will finish that before they upgrade the network further.

  • +1

Because I buy everything that Apple tell me I need

  • When they first announced the 12-line up, I will admit I was taken by the new blue colours they introduced this year. Absolute sucker for them. And the mini was the perfect size for me. I went so far as to order accessories for it as I was that confident about getting it. But after the hype waned a bit, I realised that the cost for what you're getting this year isn't worth it, in my opinion. The lack of staple accessories, the 5G that I definitely don't need, MagSafe? it's a gimmick for the average consumer and the step back in battery capacity? They touted the 11 Pro as having markedly improved battery life which made me think this is a direction I hope Apple follows but nah. I pursued a used iPhone X instead. They're still very good for their market price. Saved myself $700 and got a charger and earpods to go with it. To those upgrading, the 11 Pro line deserves your cash if you were looking to stay with Apple imo.

    • +1

I'm a sucker for blue as well
