I have just recently bought a great bike for $100 on Facebook Marketplace and was wondering what's the best deal they found whilst on Marketplace, Gumtree etc
What Is The Best Bargain You Have Found That Was Second-Hand?
Comments
Sort of related, but gas bbqs have to be one of the biggest bargains you can get.
Usually they're just dirty and need a clean, and people literally give them away on FB and gumtree, or max $50 for a 6 burner hooded bbq.
There's no money to be made, as so many are available, but I'd never buy a new gas bbq again.
I bought a Delonghi Eletta from FB marketplace for $100. The only issue was that the steamer wasn't working. I read some online forums and used a multimeter to diagnose an issue with the steam boiler, which was $50 to replace. It took me an hour to replace the steam boiler. Now I have a coffee machine worth $830.
Barely used Steelcase Leap's on eBay from a business being liquidated, $60 per chair and freshly steam cleaned on pickup (RRP $800-$1000).
Loaded up both my cars with 4 chairs and kitted out my work desk / home desks / family desk. Plenty more available but didn't want to be 'greedy'.
Guy clearly didn't know what he had and took down the listing a couple of days later! Assuming they went to an office supply auction site or something after that.
Have used various Herman Millers in offices, the Leap is the most comfortable to me compared to the standard Aeron / Mirra so that was a good day!
Picked up a PS4 with an error code on a verge collection, 5 minutes of looking up a youtube video on how to fix said code.
1 spare 300gb harddrive later and had a working PS4.Best one though was probably a Real estate business that had just upgraded their Pc's to fancy all in ones, in the process chucked out 8 of their HP Elite Desktop computers with i5's, 16gb ram and 1 tb harddrives, all working and formatted versions of windows. At ~$175 a pop it was a nice $1400 money earner.
I got a Royal Doulton crystal whisky decanter for $2 from the op shop, worth around $250
In the same visit to the same op shop, I picked up a Jamo centre speaker for another $2, worth around $250. It was a pretty successful shopping trip!
Also got a cool vintage pocket watch in India, just cos I thought it was kinda interesting. I think i paid $8 for it. I needed to get the glass replaced when I accidentally cracked it in my luggage, and the watchmaker told me it was worth around $3000
Recently picked up a damn good ebay deal on a big Caesarstone bathroom vanity unit with the tapware, sink, etc. I got it from a guy in Mosman, and it was in such good condition that I had to actually ask him whether it was the old one or the new one for his bathroom. He just felt like a change, so renovated all 3 bathrooms…it cost me $50 and it probably worth $1000
I once found a nice TV stand on the side of the road in good condition whilst I was on my way to buy the same TV stand from Ikea.
Dell xps 13 9350 i7 with the hi res touch screen. Couple of years ago on Facebook marketplace. I was the first to respond and zoom over to collect. The seller seemed surprised at how many messages they'd received.
i recently picked up a samsung 4k 28inch monitor for $150.
Girls selling their ex boyfriend's stuff
Asian students moving back home
Misspelt, or wrong titled listings
🤣🤣🤣
I ended up buying I think they're called a razor blade gaming laptop for $1,000 from an Asian student moving back home and it was only 3 months old with receipts. My mate was happy, as I was looking for him.
I bought a Samsung Ultrabook for $1,000 brand new sealed, had to get my friend in Sydney to go and collect that and pay cash. I'm 100% sure it was probably stolen, but brand new and I think at the time that was selling for around $2,000.
A purchased a spin bike which was about a 2 hour drive out of the city, for $450 but was currently selling everyone else for around $1,100 to $1,200
To be honest, half the prices i find on items on sale via OzBargain are normally less than what some people want for the item used 😁
I concur that.
And there are still some people who buy second hand items at such higher prices especially second hand iPhones (1 year old).
My missus ;p
Found gumtree/facebook marketplace this year, after moving to a larger place, and needing furniture.
Got lucky in gumtree as seller offered 5x5 IKEA shelf in good condition for free. Thankfully they dismantled it before pickup, because putting it together was cumbersome. Seller was only 5 mins drive away, and were moving overseas.. Best of all they threw in 14 rattan boxes as well (they cost $19 each, brand new), so feel quite lucky.Bought a NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 Wi‑Fi range extender and 3 other Netgear wifi modems for 6$
I had luck getting a nearly brand new Ikea sofa via Gumtree. The new one costs $600 and I paid $50 for it the owner wanted to get rid of it asap as she was moving overseas. Another one earlier this year when I started working from home and needed a work desk. Got a fairly new and sturdy Ikea desk for $20 (RRP $279) as the owner went back to Japan due to covid19.
Bag of old PS1/PS2 games for a buck at a garage sale. Some poor kid who left for university and his parents cleaned his stuff out.
2018/19 Ninja 400 motorbike at $4k. Got it in Winter when the demand for motorbikes were low.
Market price atm should be $6k. Still riding it for the past year, probably will make money when I sell.
Previous owner added some pretty expensive mods including a full exhaust system, hand warmers and bar ends.Good price. These bikes are in demand at the moment.
I purchased my K Versys 2013 - 10k kms for 5K during COVID times .
Seller put the wrong description ( Put a differnt model )
Got an Nvidia shield for $170 on ebay like new (genuinely couldn't tell it had been used, cables were even neatly coiled in the box). Considering we use it every day and they sold brand new for $300+, we've been pretty happy with it.
Refurbished Macbook Air for $525 in great condition.
Bought 3 years ago for my daughter, used every day at school as well as for non school stuff and still going strong. She even got water in it while caught in a storm and despite some marks on the screen as a result of that still works perfectly.
A black 4x4 IKEA Kallax for $20 (RRP$169), off Gumtree. Pristine condition, with no scratches. It wobbled a bit after transporting, so swapped out most of the wooden pegs (free from IKEA parts bin) and it became as good as new. Previous owners were on a rush to move house.
Got a white one this year too when house nearishby left it out for council collection. Had to disassemble it quickly to go into the boot and then reassembed for kids' book/craft storage.
Picked up a gaming laptop off gumtree. Rocked up at the guys house, you could smell the smoke coming from this guy's house 2 streets over.
Went inside and they offered me a cone, said nah just here for the laptop. He was just after some quick cash, Igot the laptop, bag, box and receipt for $300.Used it for a year then sold it for $950.
Many things over the years but two stand out.
One is a set of 8 dining chairs, hand-made and covered in pricey fabric. We bought them off the Trading Post website years ago, had to borrow a mate's van to pick them up.
I got the story from the wife; her brother had made them and given them to her as a birthday present, but a year later they had a fight over their father/mother's (can't remember) will. Her husband cracked it and placed the ad because he did not want to be reminded of the blow-up and wanted the chairs gone, so they cost us $200. Turns out the brother sells the chairs for about $450 each.
The other was a handbag my wife bought on Gumtree. It was advertised as a cheap knock-off and she asked me should she buy it for $60. I suggested she offer $40, that was accepted so she bought it.
About 2 years later we were in a hotel courtesy bus in Penang and a Japanese woman commented on how nice her bag was. My wife said it was a copy, and the woman asked if she could take a look. She did, looking at the buckle and the stitching around the label, and said, 'No, it's a real one'. Before I could ask, the woman said, 'if you would consider selling it, I would give you $2000'. Turned out to be one of 50, limited edition.
She didn't sell it…In 2004, I bought a PlayStation 2 from a pawn shop for $100! Absolutely nothing wrong with it.
The stores were still selling them for well over $300!!
I got an issey Makey purse for 35 dollars at an opshop, it retails for 1500… Plus a zildjian cymbals (2) from the footpath, which sold for 190 dollars.
what bike was it?
raleigh mtb
12v Ironman fridge for camping. 40lt paid $50 & has not missed a beat used it many times.
2 off the top of my head;
1 - I was working at an Op shop for Centerlink reasons over 5 years ago and I spotted the Complete Blu-Ray edition of Harry Potter. They wanted $10 but, they had a 50% staff discount so, I paid $5. Cut to this year, I was talking about it to my friend and found it retails for $195.
2 - On my way to get my mail, I spot that my neighbour is clearing out her house as she's moving to a smaller place. In that haul, I happily trot off with a coffee table, a sewing machine, and folding desk that costs $150 at least from Aldi. The buyer's regret is there was a pristine 1st edition German Hardcover of Book 1 of Harry Potter at the same Op Shop I worked at and I didn't have $5. Those things go for thousands now and I cry inside daily.
Ikea Gallant (L shaped) desk, $50. A couple of surface scratches but not noticeable at all. https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.prelov…
Any weber person would have thier story
I've bought cars which have had minor issues very cheaply ~2000 and been able to invest ~1000 and resell them for over triple the original amount I've paid.
I was lucky as I was able to recognise the issues and repair them. I sold the cars are market value but was able to get a good deal when buying as the cars weren't working and it was hard to sell a non working car.
I bought a Aprilia Sportcity 250cc scooter for $1100 on gumtree. Saw the listing 5 minutes after it was listed. Raced to the guys house in the middle of a really stormy night. Seller had other people ringing him whilst we were signing the documents. (Wealthy guy had moved interstate years back and was coming back to Sydney to clear out his house which included this scooter that was stored in his garage for 7 years. It had 700 kilometres on the clock.) I then rushed to Bunnings got a trailer and rushed back to collect it. The scooter wasn't starting. I got it serviced and back up and running for $500. Should have cost me only $200 to get it back working but cocky Aprilia dealer mechanic didn't like me having an opinion on what the problem was as i had researched it in the internet. He said it wasn't the problem and told me he couldn't find the problem… Took me a few months to figure out and fix the problem which was exactly what i had said at the beginning however the mechanic sent me of on a wild goose chase. I used the scooter for a year or two and then sold it for $3000.
Commercial automatic hand dryer.
RRP around $900. Saw one on Gumtree for $40. When I showed up to take a look at it, it didn't work. So I gave them $20 for it. Took it home, opened it up to inspect and couldn't see anything obviously wrong but gave everything a wiggle before putting it back together. Plugged it in and it roared to life. Installed it in the movie room bathroom (that is, the bathroom adjacent to the movie room. We don't have a bathroom that we watch movies in..). It's, ahem, very handy and also gets a few laughs.
But where was it before you bought it? Hopefully nowhere too yukky.
Ha. It was actually still new in the box - though the box itself no longer looked quite so new.
i just bought 4 x artificial topbury trees for $25. They were 3 month old. facebook MP. I checked at shops and they sell for $40 each. My back yard looks awesome now.
I picked up 5 hoops for $5 recently for my kids from a property sold 2 years ago for $12m … on the way to the zoo so you can guess the suburb. Just left the money in the letter box. I smiled at their landscape gardener mowing as I picked up the hoops and put the money in.
$50 Gaggia Classic espresso machine which was apparently not working. Gave it a thorough clean and I'm still using it today with no issues.
Anything ive gotten from my parents. Free used car,
A Fisher and Payless stainless steel oven for $50! Ours had just died and a lady had just settled on a house and was renovating the kitchen.
9 years ago, one of my work colleagues was leaving Australia for good and wanted to sell his car. He only had 2 days left and couldn't find a buyer. He was selling for $20,000 a BMW 3 series.
He asked me on the last moment if I wanted it for $10,000 and I took it but I had a new Hyundai i35X I also bought recently.
I ended up selling the BMW two months later for $18,000.
From Gumtree
Free - Delonghi Ceramic Heater (works fine from last 2 years, just can't use the auto timer feature) probably priced around $200 at Bunnings.
Free - Wife got a brand new CK dress with tags (priced USD $140) from someone who didn't like the design as it was gifted.
My mum recently pick up a Weber Baby Q on the side of the road that was probably used 3 times, grill plate is super clean!
Also scored half my wardrobe from flea markets at probably 80-90% off RRP, all quality clothing and pieces that i still wear today from 8-9 years ago.Sony a7ii body for $600. Used quite a bit and took it overseas for travelling, sold it for $900 afterwards.
Got a $300 table the wife and I where looking at buying new for $100 and pretty good condition - had to drive an hour to pick it up tho…
1-year-old fisher & paykel fridge, worth about $1500, got it for $150 & it's still going strong to this day.
Hyundai i20 (2010), bought for $3.5K, put in $1K worth of work, sold it for $7K 6 months later.
Non working Apple Magic Keyboard and Trackpad for $5.
Little bit of bashing with a mallet to get the button unstuck on the trackpad, and foil in the keyboard battery compartment to help with contact and they both work fine.
A number of years back, I found a custom built first gen i7 gaming PC in immaculate condition with twin GTX 280s and 16gb ram that was dumped in a skip nearby, took it home and
it wouldn't boot but found out that the hard drive had failed(presumably why the owners had thought it was dead and thrown it out) but after switching it out with a spare drive I had(reinstalled a fresh OS with the licence sticker still on the case), ended up selling it on Gumtree together with a spare LCD monitor for about $800. Easy money
I sold an Optoma UHD51 for $1600 that still retails for $3000. I had it for 2 years with only 46 hours usage. I could not use it often as my toddler kept staring at the lens. I advertised it for $1750 and one fellow grabbed it for $1600 the next day. I think he had a good bargain. They last for 10-15 years.
