  • Is non stick good for Asian cooking please? And is this wok the best out there for 28 - 30 cm under $90 range? Thanks

    • +8

I don't know about "Asian cooking" but IMO this wok is about as useful as a motorbike with air-conditioning and 4 wheel drive.

    • +5

No. Non stick cookware is unhealthy at high heat, and Asian cooking routinely calls for levels of heat as high as you can get, or even higher. Cooking Asian stir fries on medium/low heat is like cooking pizzas in a microwave.

Have you actually looked up at what heat level it's unhealthy?? Better yet, can the average cook stove most people have at home even achieve that kind of output?

I get the health risks but it's all relative and needs to be put on context.

    Get yourself a
Proper Asian carbon steel wok and season it well, for $20-30 and you're set for life

    • +13

Probably better to get an Asian partner that already has a wok and knows how to cook

      • Warranty lasts for how many years? And do u get a replacement during that period?

        • +2

Asian partners don't usually come with a warranty.

      • Now where to get an Asian partner?

    • +1

Recommendations where to get a good carbon steel wok?

      • +9

Haiyaaa! Real wok you find in basement of Chinese grocery store

        • Hahahaha so you just take the gamble in quality then? Any Asian stores in Melbourne that sell woks that ppl recommend?

      • +1

Any Asian kitchenware store should have a variety of woks, I'm sure you could find one near you. You didn't specify where in Melbourne you are, but while Asian hotspot suburbs like Springvale, Box Hill, Glen Waverly etc. will make it easier, you aren't limited to them by any stretch.

If you want something branded, this Pyrolux Industry Blue Steel Frypan 28cm for $35 + delivery seems like a decent option. It's not a traditional Asian wok, but I'm not sure traditional woks are what most people really want. It's carbon steel with no non stick coating, approximately the right thickness, and the flat bottom is more suited to western kitchens.

    • where but?

  • Can you actually get a wok without a handle?!

  • not good for induction cooker. no good for me

  • it seems to be unavailable now…gone too quick!
