  • Studying computer science, should I get one to play around with in the holidays? Will it help me learn useful skills?

    • +1

Yep. Good way to get introduced to Linux, and definitely something you'd look to use for more specific things later down the track once you have more skills under your belt.

    • +1

Go for it. Plenty projects you can get into.

@kapone @xoom cheers, just bought it.

    • You could just run Linux in a VM for free. Or dual boot Linux. Depending on what language you're learning, you're probably going to want to make the jump to Linux on your main PC soon enough. I'd skip the pi unless there's a specific project you've got in mind that needs it.

      • Yeah thought about that but i've always wanted to learn with a raspberry pi anyways.

        • Do both. When I was at Uni studying CompSci I had my laptop dual boot with Linux so I could do the programming side, while I had a class that actually taught us the then new Pi 1 Model B.

    • As a counterpoint, I'll say these arent useful for learning anything thats cs related. Not a good intro to gnu/linux since youre limited to arm builds on a super weak system. Youd be better off buy a 120gb ssd for $30 or so and isntalling a distro of your choice.
Most of the projects for raspberry pis are extremely surface level stuff that would be more suited toa child rather than an undergrad. If youre interested in ee stuff a pi 0 or teensy would be a better option.

There is one area where pis are legit useful for learning and thats simulating a cluster since its relatively cheap and low power draw, but youre obviously going to need more than 1.

Not just for academic or education reasons… could be the excuse you need for unchaining yourself from the relative comfort of a PC or Mac environment…

Great for creating beginners projects for yourself, your kids or your grandkids.

We all have different need and there is something nice about creating a NAS, a weather station, a home security surveillance system, small scale robotics etc. There are many projects. I am 68 and retired… it takes me back to when I was a ten year old creating morse code seta, radios… a bit more practice who knows, I may become the next McGyver

  • shoulda held out for the bigger SD card to avoid ongoing corruption issues!

    • Or you could just boot an ssd from usb.

  • well played amazon, well played
