  • That's a ripper deal for the 4 cam! I paid $750 for mine and don't regret it

    • +1

i didnt regret mine when i originally purchased them….then Arlo split from Netgear and everything has gone to shit since lol

  • I believe these things are kinda useless without a subscription right?

    • This comes with 7 days free cloud storage

    • These give you 7 days recording free.

    • why? you get 7 days free, and everything gets backed up to a HDD if you have a spare portable HDD laying around, if not they are dirt cheap to buy.

      • Got my mum an Arlo kit (can't remember if version 2 or 3).
        The subscription also gets you:
remote access to recorded events - being able to use the Arlo app to remotely view past recorded events. With the hard drive you'll have to be on the same network/subnet to be able to view past recordings.
However, you can get around this without the subscription but only if you know how to set up a VPN.
smart notifications - subscription allows for a few smarts like defining areas within your camera's view to monitor for movement and send you a notification, or being able to differentiate between an animal setting off the movement sensor and a person

Looking at this https://www.arlo.com/au/landing/arlosmart/default.aspx seems like most of the features are locked behind a sub?

Tempted but might wait for a deal on Eufy instead…esp. when Arlo doesn't have a wireless doorbell.

    • +1

No person detection without a sub is pretty rough

      • +1

Without the sub it still tells me that movement was detected but will not classify it (e.g. vehicle, person or animal) and won't allow me to view past events. So for example i can see that movement was detected an hour ago but not able to view the recording from that time, unless I'm on the same subnet as the base unit. I'm trying to set up a VPN to get around this though

    • +1

Yeah the Eufy comes with activity zones and person detection thrown in. Plus can access historic recordings from homebase and have full control even from outside home network.
Also has a growing family of other products (doorbell, lock, sensors, soon a parcel locker) that integrate.

  • ah perfection! I bought the 4 camera bundle. After 5 seconds i checked it again, price has gone up to 750! :)

    • Once you claim the deal it goes back to original price.

      • ah! didnt know that :) thanks!

  • If I have an existing 4 pack, can I buy the 4 packs just it only for the camera? so link the new 4 cameras to the current base station?

    • Yep. But I think If you exceed a certain amount of cameras you’ll need to pay for a sub.

      • 4 to be exact

        • Not exact - it is actually 5 (I have 5). More than 5 and you need a sub, or set up a second base with a different user ID.

  • Are these arlo any good?

    • they are pretty decent actually.

    • +3

They used to be good but since Arlo started reducing the bitrate (video quality), they are now pretty hopeless. Often the video is so pixelated and "messy" that it is hard to identify much. The size of my video files has more than halved since March 2019, with a big hit in April 2020. My Arlo Pro 2 are now no better than my old original Arlo 720P cameras.

Don't be fooled into thinking that the 1080P HD is like what you would get from a phone or camera - it is NOTHING like that !

Since Arlo split from Netgear, things have gone downhill pretty fast - maybe this is why the recent spate of heavily discounted deals ?

      • What would you recommend?

        • +3

Not sure, maybe Eufy HD (the newer dearer ones) ? I don't know a lot about them but they seem to have the features of Arlo Pro 2, longer battery life, and local storage.

The silly thing is that the Arlo Pro 2 cameras and base are actually good devices, and the app & interface is probably one of the better ones. BUT Arlo is just wrecking everything by unilaterally (you cannot choose to accept the firmware updates or 2FA) downgrade the whole system to save themselves a few bucks on data storage, and the Arlo support has become almost non-existent (unlike Netgear's support).

Also be aware that Arlo is currently implementing a ridiculously poor two factor authorisation (2FA) system. It is compulsory and only allows you to have your phone as a trusted device. If you generally use your desktop/laptop to view Arlo etc, that device has to be authorised with the phone EVERY time you use it - the stupid Arlo system does not allow you to remember trusted devices.

@Andy01: Thanks for the review mate. Seems to confirm what's floating around on the web regarding Arlo - will be staying clear. Hopefully Eufy will go on sale when Black Friday comes around.

      • +1

hey andy, is the poor video quality via wire-free installation of the cameras? if so, will it be improved with the wired connection?

        • +1

These cameras are Wifi only, cannot be wired…

          • +1

@ironpaw: sorry, i mean to say powered soley by battery rather than usb. I understand that there are more features when it's not relying on battery power.

        • +1

The poor video quality is also for my cameras powered by the USB cable. Video is so bad its all a blur since their latest compulsory updates.

  • Hi, can you give me some advice? I consider this vs Reolink 8CH 5MP PoE Home Security Camera System, which is currently $419.99 ? Thanks

    • +1

I know nothing about Reolink, sorry. Is it a fully wireless system, or are you comparing a wired system with wireless ?

      • Reolink is wired system. I also want to compare wireless and wired system as well. Did you use Arlo at the moment? Thanks

    • The Reolink 5MP POE cameras have a fantastic daytime video image but the night quality without the IR lights is poor.

  • i wish add on camera cost around 150 too (lesser in 4 unit deal, if you take into account the base price) but ill be happy if it's 150 bux

  • i bought the 3 camera system in the last minute of the deal to swap out the last few of my original Arlo HD cameras which are annoying to replace batteries on. (much rather replace 1 battery than the 4 on the original Arlo). Might sell the new Base unit with 1 camera to sweeten the deal a little further as I won't be needing it.

  • Sorry if this is an obvious question but Does this fall under the 0% cashback category in cashback/shopback?
