      • Once you start, it might be hard to go back ;) Physical media still has the best quality. i.e. dark areas don't have that rainbow kind of effect going on. The audio quality can also be a bit better too

    • +2

It comes down to personal preference and individual circumstances. On the whole, OLEDs are likely to have what most people consider a better picture. How much that's worth is up to you. LCDs do have some benefits too though, such as brightness if you have a room with a lot of light.

At the end of the day, if you've seen the 9000H and it looks good (enough) to you, then maybe save the money. Or go for a larger size (depending on your viewing distance). Most people would probably get more benefit from that.

I was in the same position a couple of years ago and ended up with a 65" 9000E over a 55" B7 for a similar price. It's a good TV and I have no regrets. I'm looking at another TV now for another room and leaning towards the 9500H as a good balance of price and performance. The 65" is the same price as this on GG eBay, so thinking about whether to pull the trigger or wait as it's relatively new to market.

      • I'd wait for reviews at least. I'm in the same boat. I want to see how it performs on consoles specifically, and they're not out yet, so there's not much info floating around. Fingers crossed it will be available soon :)

    • x950h is a better tv IMO.. worth the few extra bucks

Proper tvs,not tarted up stuff like alot of lgs and Samsung's with fancy words

My plasma bought in 2001 is still going like day one.

      • +2

I'm sad that manufacturers moved away from plasma - my 2008 is still going strong no issues with image retention / burn-in at all. Finding it hard to justify an OLED when this 12 year old panasonic beast is still going strong!

  • +8

Fuuuuu. Waiting for the 48" version to arrive, but its probably going to be more expensive than this…

    • 55” inch is too big for my bedroom

      • +7

        thats what she said.

    • In the same boat- waiting for the CX48 to come in. Having said that, I was looking at the CX55 intently over the last few months. The CX48 will be a better replacement for the 46" Sony I have already though.

    • What the, I'm using an old 50 inch LG 3D TV will be upgrading to 65 inch

  • +1

I would like an OLED but I dont want to bin my existing TVs. The outside ones are too big for bedrooms.

    • I have an OLED and it's amazing, but I never watch 4k films. Free to Air and pay TV is also still on 1080i resolution so you rarely get to experience the wonders of OLED and 4k unless you watch documentaries and blu ray video.

      I have a Sony A8H

      • We mostly watch pay tv with Fetch (4K is available as standard on Mighty) and Netflix (we have the 4k plan but No TV's). I will need to update my router first as my Netgear R7000 is ageing and is barely keeping up with 1080P over multiple TV's. We are on the highest NBN speed.

I will wait for a killer deal. This is good but looks like prices are going to go down even more unless WW3 breaks out and China will stop selling to the west. Let's wait and watch.

ASUS AC86U or upcoming AX86U, highly recommend

          • @Lion007: Is Asus good? I have only used Netgear from the start.

Which one is better? ASUS AC86U or the upcoming AX86U and why?

            • @El Grande: Really good. I trust the brand because they have good chips - decent power, ram, really strong wifi range and speeds, and software that is always updated. Built in malware/antivirus/intrusion protection plus a game mode.

I used to have net gear r7000 and always had to tinker with settings or reboot it once in a while. No such issues with the ASUS.

Personally I have an AC88U which is discontinued and older but still strong.

AC86U and AX86U - only difference is wifi5 and Wi-Fi 6, with the latter having a better CPU. Although you’ll be quite satisfied with an AC86U, more than up to the task and you save a bit of coin as well.

    • You can sell them…

    • You have outside TVs? Man, way to make me feel insecure.

Waiting for the year when an 86" OLED becomes affordable… want something Yuuuge!

  • Yeah not even bothering until black Friday

    • Dont think you are going to see much come off the new model OLED TV's

      • I'm not too fussy just want a half decent 4k TV with hdr10 and hdmi 2.0 looking at Samsung and hisense

        • Assuming you mean hdmi 2.1? Literally every new tv has 2.0

          • @TightTerry: Well 2.0 or better I've seen some cheaper brands that don't have 2.0 or hdcp 2.2

  • +2

buy now or wait till eoy sales?

  • +1

It's obvious now the CX prices will not go down as low as last year's C9 prices even with bargains deals. because of Coronavirus.

  • -5

Gee if you don't know how to look after your OLED TV then you shouldn't have an OLED , i have the first OLED TV LG produced and it still produces an awesome picture and i have no burn in. I never watch those morning shows because of the logo's permanently on the screen which i thought everyone knew creates burn in as does any static image on the screen for a length of time , same with ABC 24 the ticker tape on the bottom will create burn in.
I thought the broadcasters were minimising the possibility of burn in after the big stink a few years ago , but they seem to have become worse than ever and they don't seem to care anymore.

    • +2

Gee if you don't know how to look after your OLED TV then you shouldn't have an OLED

You'd be surprised. People bought the disc free ps5 thinking that they could still play their old disc based games. People will spend hundreds of hours saving up for something (or * gulp * paying it off later), but won't do a few hours of research to make sure they're getting what they actually want, or how to maximise its life

      • How with no disc drive lololololol

    • +14

Imagine spending thousands of dollars on a tv and then having to worry about what you are watching on it…Basically worrying about using the tv as a tv.

      • Lol

      • Pretty much this. That's a mighty high horse you rode in on David.

        • +3

Little does he know that said high horse, despite its considerable stature and comfortable saddle, must not be ridden for more than 30 minutes at a time, nor between the hours of 7-10am or 5-9pm.

      • I don't have to imagine it I'm living it. CX owner I use it for gaming and Netflix, don't watch anything with static TV channel logos, I take care of it like its my baby but it's worth it the picture quality is the best none can surpass it at the moment.

      • -1

Imagine buying a new car, only to find it requires a charger. I mean who does zero research before buying a TV lol.

    • What a ridiculous comment.

OLEDs are marketed as the 'best' image there is. They are pushed in the stores. There are not large stands next to them explaining a list of Do's and Don'ts for them

To expect people to be constantly vigilant that the things they are watching don't have something static on screen for X amount of time is just ridiculous. Most people don't spend ages researching online. They go to a store and buy what they think looks good for the price they can afford.

i thought everyone knew creates burn in as does any static image on the screen for a length of time

Really? Who are these 'everyone' you speak of? Certainly not the majority of people.

  • Waiting for it to drop to around $2200 to pull the trigger.

    • do you think it will be around that price Black Friday?

      • +1

I doubt it. Note that it's only this price because the Good Guys are allowing you to stack the specials (they've currently got it dropped about $300 to $2995 online/instore, which has propagated through to their eBay store for a further 15% off)

      • Not too sure. But people here on OzB are confident of getting $1800. So $2200 still seems achievable at the end of this year.
I am hopeful of this price.

Although sales agent at Hardly Normal and JB HiFi advised me that due to Covid prices won't go down like last year (citing less production), but I won't trust them TBH. What they failed to realise is that due to Covid, sales have also gone down and people may not be buying too many high end TVs as many people lost their jobs this year.

        • But people here on OzB are confident of getting $1800.

Wishful thinking, IMO. Look at past deals of C9 55", they were <$2000 in October, eventually dropping to all time lows of $1700-1800. This year's model is approximately $500 (25%) more. I think it'll get down to around $2000, but $1800 is a bit unrealistic, especially when COVID is affecting supply chains.

What they failed to realise is that due to Covid, sales have also gone down and people may not be buying too many high end TVs as many people lost their jobs this year.

That's not necessarily true. While we're in a recession, one of the few winners of this pandemic is home entertainment. Look at the surge in streaming, or how demand outstripped supply for graphics cards, PS5, Xbox, Switches, and even Ring Fit. People are lining up to drop $1500 GPUs. No reason to think they're tightening their belts for TVs.

        • +3

I work at hardly normal. Due to Covid, we don’t have stock of tvs to begin with and what we have stock of flys out the door anyway. We’re still trying to fulfil back orders of tvs at this point as are many other Brisbane based stores.
LG has also stopped doing staff orders due to stock constraints. You’re looking at a 1-2+ month wait at least on an oled if there’s no stock available at that store.

Also not sure if you saw the news but HN profits were up 20% partly due to Covid. People are still buying.

Tldr: don’t expect huge discounts this year. Supply and demand my friend. :)

        • Just saw this article, so relevant.

Global TV shipments hit a “historical high” in the third quarter of this year […] Both Samsung and LG, the two largest TV manufacturers, said today that they’re expecting profits to increase this quarter compared to last year.

20% industry-wide boost in demand for TVs. TV makers are doing just fine, so less incentive to discount. Coupled with drop in production, especially with the delay in LG's new Chinese factory, I wouldn't hold my breath for big sales.

  • +1

OLED picture quality is amazing but for the money, I rather go for that big 75 inch picture.

    • Yea but the good LCD's are expensive too….

      • Sony X9000h. Very well reviewed.

        • +1

For a middle range LCD it's a great, doesn't compete with OLED, let along upper range LCD.

        • I found a retailer with the Sony next to LG and the Sony is significantly cheaper for a reason. The rep was also saying something about 2.1 and firmware which might not happen anytime soon.

          • @[Deactivated]: 2.1 firmware for the Sony will be released in time for next gen

            • @TightTerry: Yeah he was confident otherwise..

  • Not all games can run 4K 120hz. TVs are just not quite ready for 120hz IMO. Not even this one. Maybe they will fix the issues in the next update.

    • Only a few racing games or sports games will handle 4k @120fps

    • +2

TVs are just not quite ready for 120hz IMO.

That's not an 'opinion,' it can be fact-checked, and the fact is: you're wrong. HDMI 2.1 = 48Gbps = potential 4K @120Hz. The question is whether there's content, not whether the TVs can support it, which they can.

      • -1

It's not just about hdmi 2.1. Get one of this TVs and you would know why.

        • I don’t need to, it’s already been benchmarked.

          • -1

@SydStrand: Looks like you haven't owned an OLED screen yet or if you have it's been for a short time. That's why you don't get what I'm trying to tell you. Gaming on OLED is a big risk. Non-oled tvs with HDMI 2.1 are not ready yet. They all promising software update.

            • +1

@Mi2: I have a C9, play games on it, and I still don't know what you're talking about.

Gaming on OLED is a big risk.

              Do go on.

            • @Mi2: How is it a big risk???

              • @WaffleCrusader: In some games with static bars.

                • +1

@Mi2: You're shifting goalposts from 4K @120Hz. Burn-in risk is a negligible in a modern OLED. Rtings has been conducting a long-running burn in test and only encountered issues at the 9000 hour mark, i.e. keeping the same HUD elements on-screen for five hours a day for five years, and never changing content.

            • @Mi2: Can you break down and explain your reasoning about your claim this is not 4k 120hz ready?

              • @chyawala: I don't personally consider OLEDs for gaming because the type of I game I play have too many static images. So I'm talking about non-oled tvs. If you play a different type of games then go for OLED because it's great.

@Mi2: That link doesn't support your position at all. If anything, it made my point.

'OLED fans should look to LG's range, in which all models are already packing HDMI 2.1 happily, with support for every feature mentioned here'

                  So you're still wrong.

                • @Mi2: Quote from your link actually recommends LG OLED and say they are 4k120 ready with all the feature of auto low latency and VRR.

…And Sony's OLED TVs are completely out of the loop for HDMI 2.1 and the PS5-friendly gaming features….OLED fans should look to LG's range, in which all models are already packing HDMI 2.1 happily, with support for every feature mentioned here…The TV we most highly rate for PS5 players is the LG CX, which won the T3 Award for the best gaming TV.

A good deal today but I think better prices are coming soon. The same model just had its shelf price dropped from around $3,250 to $2,525 in the UK (that includes 20% VAT).

Sign of the times when this is considered a good deal. Suppose if you got money burning in your pocket..

    • +2

Just so you know, there have been some people able to get the 65" CX for around $3,400, see here.

      • @BeerCrisp oh wow, thanks. It would be tricky to price match imo, but worth giving it a try I suppose.

      • I wonder where they price matched it from..

        • Other sales. This deal is not particularly good in the scheme of things, its just at this moment.

          • @Xizor: Understood, at this point of time I think anywhere between $3400 - $3650 is a good price for the CX 65 inch, the lowest it can get is probably $2999 in about 8 months time

            • @Ferazzo: I'm a little more positive on that front. I think the the transition back into competition mode will return up over the next few months… providing supply continues to ramps up. If i'm wrong, well, i guess i'll keep using my 2016 65M7000 for another year.

    • +1

      OLED65CXPTA

      $3,650.75 here.

EDIT: apologies, didn't include shipping, see above

  • OLED TVs are for people who do not like to watch static TV channels with logos and are perfectly aware of burn in and willing to take care of their TV. In return you get the best picture quality available at the moment.

So to summarize do not buy it for your Nana.

    • +3

These newer models have a couple settings to help:
      - setting to allow the TV to shift the image by a small number of pixels periodically
      - setting to detect logos and dim their brightness

Quicker processors, running smarter software, used by burn-in aware users should avoid the issue completely.

  • +1

Has anyone been successful calling up and trying to negotiate a lower price over the phone on the CX 65, using the image of a receipt that people have posted on forums, like the one below? I tried calling TGG, JB HIFI and Bing Lee, all three said they can only price match today's online price.
If someone has been successful negotiating in store using the receipt image, which store locations did you visit?

    Image of receipt:
    https://m.imgur.com/uY5ZBIV

    • +2

Not sure calling up would be your best bet. Going into the store, chatting to a salesman, discussing the receipt and negotiating from there would be the way to go. Just depends if you get a good salesman or not on the day.

    • Not me. I tried price matching with the $3300 sales receipt but unfortunately all of them declined and gave little discounts. I don't live in Victoria and I directly walked to Good Guys in store as well as JB-HiFi. Good Guys actually offered me 3900 a day before this Ebay deal, so I just laughed and moved on. I hope you and everyone else get better luck with those receipts.
