(Refurb) Nook Simple Touch + Cover for ~ $115 AUD (after Rebates and Free B&N Gift Cards)

101

Currently there are several promotions running which enable you to get a refurbished Nook Simple Touch& a cover shipped here for a very decent price. It's a bit of a run around, but could be worth the effort for some of you who want a nice touch screen ereader for Christmas(especially given that Amazon won't be shipping the soon-to-be-released Kindle Touch to Aus anytime soon.)

The refurbished Nooks are, for all intents and purposes, indistinguishable from the new ones.

The basic process involves:

-signing up to ebates to get a $10 Barnes and Noble giftcard
-Shopping through ebates to get 8% cashback from B&N
-Buying an email giftcard from B&N to get an additional free $10 giftcard from B&N
-Using the giftcard to buy your refurbed Nook and Cover
-Getting the Nook shipped to Aus via a mail forwarder

Note that the cashback & free gift cards won't be given to you for a month or two. You can spend the giftcards on Books for the Nook, or a second Nook, or whatever you want from B&N

I've written a much more detailed post about this here: http://pastebin.com/zr8Cp8SF

Hope somebody finds it useful!

I got lost after the first sentence.. soz..

  • Hah, sorry, it's not for everybody. But hopefully it will help someone out there get what they want at a good price.

  • Is all this work worth saving even $50 or whatever it is?

    • +1

If you're familiar with using eBates/shipito, and I imagine a few people here are, then it's pretty easy.

I just went into a bit of detail explaining it all so it seems complicated. But anyway a few people were interested on Whirpool where I put the original post, so I thought I may as well copy it over here since I'd already gone to the trouble of typing it out.

If you can't be bothered and just want a good ereader, you can get a refurbed Nook shipped over here from overstock.com for about $125. No cover, though,

      • Fair enough.

  • Welcome to OzB, and good work on posting so much detail. That said, I'm not sure I could be bothered expending so much effort in saving $25 and sacrificing local warranty on so many steps!

  • The refurb Nook Color is good to. Buy.com listing it for US$139 or so.

  • @lachyzee Best to put the post in points format and the full process into something like pastebin for those who are really interested in getting this.

Don't take it the wrong way, your post is really well written and detailed enough for everyone to follow but too long for everyone to grasp the basic steps that are needed.
I hope you understand what I mean and trim the post to a readable level. Cheers

No problem, hope what I've changed it to is a bit better.

      • awesome..have you already gotten one? What android version are you running, 2.1?

And what sort of apps can you run on this, I realise it has the same SoC as the nook colour but still?

        • Not yet, should come Monday though.

There's a whole list of Android apps for the NST here (think its a bit outdated though - more work now ie Google maps):

If I was going to get a Nook purely for rooting, it's be a Nook Colour though! So many more possibilities with the LCD screen. But I want to read books!

  • WTF?

The Nook Simple Touch price is being reduced to $99, there is no need for this rigmarole.

    • As I said, the Refurbs are basically brand new Nooks, but for $20 less. They have the same warranty and options for extended Warranty as a non-refurb, so that should tell you something about their reliability.

      • It's not $20 less, the Nook Simple Touch is droppin to $100. So you are paying more than brand new price for a refurb after all that trouble :S

  • Thanks for the effort and sharing .

Forget touch screen if you want to read ebooks, go for a kindle instead, got mine refurbished for $109 and it's like brand new, e-ink is the way to go….. see the deal here: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/56278

    • This is both e-ink and touch screen.

That is the older, outdated Kindle Keyboard model that you've linked to. The only reason I can see to get an older Kindle Keyboard (rather than a NST, (upcoming) Kindle 4 Touch or Sony PRS-T1) would be to get the 3G version with worldwide free 3G.

edit some people do hate touch screens, of course!

      • i see, didn't know e-ink and touch were possible…

        • No problem. I should've said, older Kindles are still a great buy at the price point you got yours for.

They have more storage than the upcoming K4, amongst other things. And a lot of people swear by the keyboard. There's a reason that Amazon plans to keep selling them after they release the K4! They're a great little machine.

  • +1 for the effort, but personally i don't find it worth it.
