  • greys online which means + buyers premium.

Might as well buy one from the US.

    • As it is not an auction im not sure the buyers premium applies.

my problem with this is that it's already a refurb where for an extra $50 you get a brand new one with warranty.

    • hmm good point, maybe not such a great deal afterall

    • relative to the $99 price tag, $50 is a pretty difference

  • +7

You can get the new model for US$130 including shipping to Australia.

This is not a bargain for superceded, repaired stock.

Was just looking at that myself, but the old model is actually better.
      4Gb Storage - new has 2gb
Audio - no audio on the new one
Keyboard can be useful if you like taking notes

There are some good comparisions between the versions in the comments on amazon.com

      • Georgedeka could you provide the link to the comments section comparing the 2 versions.

Where can we buy the old version - wifi or 3G.

        cheers

        • Both touch and keyboard models are available at Dick Smith now.
          Keyboard model $159.
Or you can ship from Amazon directly too.

2Gb vs 4Gb won't be an issue for many. as it's loading up your Kindle with 1200 vs 2400 books.
Anything you purchase from Amazon you can delete & reload for free. It would only matter if you had a heap of unconverted PDFs. But PDFs aren't very good on this device unless you have very good eyesight.
You can use Calibre to convert to mobi & shrink the size (especially if you remove large graphics).

      • If you type a lot the old K3 is better. Or wait for Kindle Touch.

      • You can get the model with the keyboard for US$139 + shipping new from Amazon - http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Wireless-Reader-Wifi-Graphite/d…

The older model is better in many ways, for instance it has a keyboard and has free international internet through the experimental browser. If you want only a reader then the new model would be better, if you want more, then like me you will e looking for the older model.

      • It only says wifi, no mention of 3g, does the model on sale have the free internationa; internet you mention?

        • There are two models, wi-fi and 3g. This offer is not the 3g.

        • You are right, this is not the 3g model.

      • The 3G model (not the one above) "has free international internet"
The above model has the experimental browser (which is crap unless you're reading just txt) but you need to provide WiFi.

  • I'd like an e-book reader, but i'll prolly wait around for some reviews of the kindle fire.

If you want an eBook reader, the e-Ink Kindles are going to be significantly better for reading than the Kindle Fire. The LCD screen of the Fire will be backlit, meaning you'll effectively be reading whilst looking at a light bulb!

Yeah, I agree with this. I found a kindle (and returned it to its owner) and compared it to my ipad. No competition with readability - I find the ipad okay but not entirely comfortable on the eyes or its weight. Been on the hunt for a kindle since.

Can anyone trump this deal with a better one?

      • do you know which e-reader has the most format support?

  • What's the best, cheapest reader out at the moment? I'm interested but would like to spend <$100.

    • Honestly, just spend a little more and get the Kindle, or wait for the price to settle a bit. The battery life on every other eReaders pale in contrast with the Kindle - not to mention there are free books bargains posted from Amazon.com posted on here all the time.

      • pushniacki, Everywhere i look, kindle expresses battery life in time (weeks/months) while all other brands talk about the number of 'page turns' - which is frustrating and difficult to make comparisons. Do you have a website link to show a comparison, thanks.

  • I think Dick Smith is selling it for $139 brand new.

    • that's the new model (that is described as inferior above)

TBH, i have this older model and i find the extra storage useful but the newer one has a smaller form factor

each to their own, i guess

  • GST included ? item not new - therefore NO GST should be applicable !

For all those saying this isn't a good deal you really need to do more research. This is a VERY GOOD DEAL. Yes it's a refurb but you are getting 12 months warranty from Dick Smith. This is what you are getting: http://dicksmith.com.au/product/A3456/kindle-keyboard-wi-fi-… so a saving of $50 is a saving of 1/3 off the retail price, factor in the 12 months warranty and if anything does go wrong with it after that Amazon would likely fix any issues, you got yourself a nice deal! +1 from me and mine is on order… THANKS OP!

  • anyone receive it yet?

    what is the condition like?
    scuffed, scratched?

    • Should be here tomorrow or the next day, will you let you guys know..

Update, here is some info on the condition of the these units: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1712173&p…

Opened up the parcel box and to my surprise i see a fully sealed amazon box, meaning i needed to pull the tab to rip open the box. I could not believe how good these are are for refurbs, there is absolutely NO WAY to know this is not brand spanking new, it is flawless in every way. The clear plastic sticky stuff on the screen once peeled off reveals not a scratch, not a mark nothing but brand new looking device. Turned it on and it looks great.

I was immediately struck by how light and thin this thing is. Very nice, i'm happy with my purchase!

I recommend just leaving the box sealed when you get it if it's for a present, i think by tuning it on i may have ruined the end user experience of the welcome/getting started screens etc.

    • Saw your post on Whirlpool as well. Convinced me to order it! Ordered it on Sunday 13th, received dispatch email today so hopefully I can get it by the end of this week. Also, hopefully all the units that they're shipping are like yours!
