Just a note, the Dell WD19TB is also now certified for Apple.. could be an option when it is on sale https://www.dell.com/en-au/work/shop/dell-thunderbolt-dock-w…

    • Looks like a good option for people looking for additional monitor support. As there are pros and cons for every device ill try to quickly chalk some up for people interested.

Dell Pros: extra display port and hdmi port

Dell Cons: 2 less Usb a ports, 1 less usb c port, not SD card reader.

Although I'm not going to use mine with a mac atm, I'd need all those extra ports for basic devices like keyboard, mouse, and other legacy devices to try and max it out.

      • Additional display ports won’t work on a Mac. You’re limited to one display output (HDMI or DisplayPort) and can get an additional display using the Thunderbolt port and a Thunderbolt to HDMI/DP cable.

        • Is that a limitation of the Dell dock?

@tonyarnold: @tonyarnold: I think its because the Mac does not support MST (Multi Stream Transport).

            • @Davesday: Correct. No MST support.

            • @Davesday: Thanks for that I have been looking at the Dell dock purely because to the two display ports out … I was trying to 'daisy' chain a couple of display port screens and that didn't work so I figured a clean solution would be this (Dell Hub) with two display port connections. Saved me making an expensive purchase/misktake. Interestingly I had looked and found caldigit with smaller unpowered hubs with dual DP or dual HDMI .. guessing these would not work either then?

              • @Elijha: I don't think it would work. But I know of a potential solution on TB3.0 docks with TB3.0 daisychain port for displays. You could get a USB-C to Displayport adapter to get the second display out. However if your resolution target is 3840x2160/60Hz, that would be tricky. I think it will only hit 30Hz at that resolution unless the Mac and the adapter supports it (DisplayPort HBR3). But if all you want is 2560x1440/60Hz, you should be fine.

      • I have verified caldigit to work on windows with bootcamp dual 4k displays which for me was the only reason i looked at something with 2 display ports when i bought mine.

It seems Dell has a module that can give the extra USB-C and more power 180W

      • To connect the second monitor, please connect a USB-C Video Adapter to the other Thunderbolt 3 port on the TS3 Plus and then connect the monitor cable to the USB-C Video Adapter.

        • i didn't know usb-C monitors were that uncommon

    • It’s on sale now. 364 but you can always find a Dell coupon to knock it lower. I’m tempted.

    • I’ve got both the Dell and the Caldigit. If you have a Mac, get the Caldigit.

  • But why is boot camp not supported??

    • Works fine for me.

      • On the website says it doesn’t support boot camp

        • I actually have one of these docks and it's great, so was surprised to see this as I haven't had any issues, as Chazzozz says, "Just Plain Worked", it will also power the newer high wattage MBP's.

Seems people have had issues with the dock in Windows for external displays (either Thunderbolt or DisplayPort) so that's probably why they've now put a disclaimer about bootcamp. I would have it a guess that it's also probably related to how old the Mac is.

  • I’ve got one of these for my previous MBP and it’s awesome. I tried others without success, even after endlessly stuffing around with settings and drivers. I spent a bit more and got one of these and it Just Plain Worked. If you’re near an Apple store ask them if they’ll price-match. Possibly not, but I find if it’s within 10% they can often be accommodating, then you’ve also got their excellent return policy available and local warranty. YMMV

  • FUUUUUUU I just ordered one of these thru amazon, hasn't even arrived yet! :( I was looking around for a deal for a while and didn't see any real discounts on it

    • Why do you order straightly from apple, $399 au

      • Agreed, this is what I did.
Fast and free shipping and additional 1.5% cash back from Apple ($6)

  • That is some expensive shipping.

  • I'm using one of these with my MBP 16" - works well and excellent range of ports - the only extra port I might have asked for would have been an HDMI port (which isn't unusual - most of the newer fully featured USB-C/TB3 docks don't - so can't complain too much since everything else works so well)

  • Although out of stock atm, wouldn't the USB-C Pro Dock be a more flexible option that can do both USB-C and Thunderbolt docking??? buyer beware

Edit: "A Thunderbolt 3 laptop (like most recent MacBooks) can use a USB-C dock, but will lose its bandwidth advantage. But a USB-C laptop (like the older 12in MacBook) won't work with a Thunderbolt 3 dock, like this one.

There are, however, newer docks on the market that work with both T3 at full 40Gbps speed and USB-C at 5Gbps. These include one, the USB-C Pro Dock, from the maker of the TS3 Plus."

  • Might be relevant for some: I've had no problems with the CalDigit with my MacBook and this might be more of a problem with my Dell M5530 laptop.

This laptop requires a 130w power adapter, and the CalDigit only does 87w over Thunderbolt, so I thought no problem - it'll just discharge/charge very slowly depending on the load.

But after being connected to the CalDigit for a while over Thunderbolt, it would completely refuse to charge over Thunderbolt, even moving back to a Dell dock that would normally charge it. Had to get the motherboard replaced to fix it. The first time I thought I was just unlucky with something, but the second time it got me worried.

CalDigit support were nice but had no solution, only suggesting that I connect the Dell M5530 to the "non-powered" Thunderbolt port instead of the powered one, and charge the Dell using the regular power port/adapter.

I also use the U3415W's KVM feature, which the dock also seems to not always recognise for some reason on both the Macbook and Dell.

  • Also, please note, you can buy this direct from Caldigit via the Amazon US store.

    • Is there a price benefit ie free with Prime or somthing?

      • not sure about price benefit, but I think Amazon are easier to deal with regarding customer service enquiries etc.

  • MasterCard currently converts 254.00 USD to 350.44 AUD.
Are there other charges that take it up to $366 AUD?

    • Don't think so, I used Paypal and the conversion must have been slightly different.

      • Ah that makes sense, PayPal give bad rates, best to use an international fee free credit card and pay in the native currency if you can.
