  • The retail price on the Dell website for this is $2299 with 6 cell battery and 500Gb hard disk . So id say huge savings for this configuration =).

    • only 3 available it appears…

  • +2

Still seems expensive for what it is though… You could get an i5 laptop for half that price and buy an SSD for $200. FWIW I'm not negging as you can't get that model for that price otherwise, but personally I'd be recommending something else.

    • Agreed , but it is a business machine(you do usually pay a bit more for those) and pre-configured with all the right things which both saves you the hassle of compatibility and opening a machine up .

      • Not necessarily 'all the right things' though. Eg: Windows 7 Ultimate is kind of useless over Home Premium for 99% of people. Also for something that price you'd generally be expecting/wanting 8GB RAM.

      • I'm not noticing any configuration changes worth paying for. Just like any other laptop I have ever used. Whatever benefits this model has over others, I'm not experiencing it.

      • I think the 14" form factor with anti-glare screen is worth the price of admission alone.

I can't stand the glossy screens on the dime a dozen cheapo 15.6" models. And an extra 0.5kg is significant - try adding another 500g to your 15" laptop and see if you notice it.

    • Dont compare to 15.6" laptops that weigh 3kg, this laptop is designed to actually be portable.

      • +1

yeah, but my E6420 is about 2.4kg… even though Dell advertised 2.0. Not too portable for a 14 inch.

      • Most 15.6" laptops weigh ~2.5kg, which is only 400g more. It's really not that significant. I carry a 15.6" laptop with me every day. But if you really insist on a 14" there are Lenovos for ~$600.

Edit: And if Make it so is correct then it's only ~100g more for the 15.6" laptops.

        • T420? Want one!

32 bit OS? that is a little annoying!
I know these are different leagues but how about the the recent asus u36 deal compared to this? I would have loved the ssd and backlit keyboard. But the weight and size seems to be significantly less in the asus.

Ultimate keys can be used for both 64 and 32bit versions (pretty sure Home and Pro editions can do the same), just check if the laptop actually comes with the discs

You should only buy this laptop if you need the features otherwise just go with the Asus

      • Thanks for the tip about keys

Decent deal if you wanted a 14" business laptop with a Firewire port. The 9 cell battery easily lasts ~6 hours (probably a bit longer) on a full recharge.

A bit off topic…but just to give you guys an idea about the sort of deals that are up for grabs from the Dell outlet from time to time… (just sharing info, so pls don't neg me): I recently got a refurbished E5540 model (i5-2520M, 1920x1080 screen, 9-cell batt, Win7 Pro 64-bit, 250GB HD and 2GB RAM). Cost less than $500. Build quality is better than expected. And the 9-cell rocks!

    • Is it good to buy from Dell outlet and not from their default website and can you extend the warranty?

      • +1

You can call up to extend the warranty. They'll sell you anything if possible =)

        • Correct. From memory, they charge ~$250 for an additional year of warranty (and $350 for 2 years).

If you purchase with a Gold/Platinum credit card, your warranty may be automatically extended.

        • Is the $250 charge same, as we add it with the new laptop in the customisation?
or Dell outlet charges extra money for the warranty as compared to the dell main site?

My experience was pretty good. The machine was as new with the same packaging, documentation, and accessories. No dead pixels (which had been my only worry). Can't tell from a brand new machine, really.

  • E6420 have 14" screen inside the 15" chassis. This makes it have a bit bigger look and a bit heavier than standard14" m laptop

  • Lol at the other laptop in the list having a 'FFS hard drive'. I guess it would be if I got a 120Gb 5400rpm drive in a $780 laptop.

  • "Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000" - Graphics power of a wetfart, Dealbreaker!!!!

there is a business laptop, not for gaming
