What snack or treat you couldn't wait to try made you go MEH?

Seeing as Ozbargain had a popular 'Didn't like that movie' thread https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/564235, thought I would post the same idea, this time for snack foods. Were you ever looking forward to chowing down on a chocolate bar, or packet of lollies, only to be disappointed?

Some of my most notable letdowns were:

  • Infuzions (Potato Mix Thai Sweet Chilli) - so unsatisfying and bland
  • Cadbury Favourites - tiny and overpriced, even when half price!
  • Allen's Party Mix - used to love the variety, but now all the lollies seem to have the same texture and less flavour
  • Haagen-Dazs (supermarket tubs) - meh, although totally concede the ingredients are 100 times more natural than other ice creams

Also, what foods do you wish they'd bring back? I totes miss Lanes (Ritz) In-a-Biskit series. Apparently they did reintroduce these a while back, but they went straight to the clearance bins on Catch and the Reject Shop, so obviously not popular enough.

      • Those things won't expire. It will still look and taste the same even if you pull them out of the pantry 10 yrs later.

        • I reckon. Still can't believe I finished a whole one.

The wrapping had a slight sheen on the inside from the oil they used when baking (?) these things. Oil!!! Never had any oil residue on the wrapper when I buy my swiss rolls from Woolies or Coles.

Anyway, even the small ones who love sweet things gave these a pass. They had a bite and gave it away.

    • You've got to to try the Japanese version, with real banana! Sadly crazy $$$ here as they need to be fresh. Tokyo Banana.

    The new recipe Cadbury Roses.
    YUCK.
    Cadbury ruined Christmas

    • +1

Thank you for very much for ruining Christmas

    • Snap.
      Hated these

Ben and Jerrys :( There was so much hype around them and when I tried it I felt like it was all sugar, and lacked a complexity to it. Much prefer the gelato stores along Lygon st

    • Just finished a tub, but I guess you're right about it being all sugar

    • Agreed. They have a couple of good flavours, but they also have some downright terrible ones. When it's costing >$10 a pop, I don't really feel like playing lucky dip as to whether I'm going to get something that's edible or not.

    • I feel the same, but only because Australia only stocks the boring Ben & Jerry's flavours. In the States they have some pretty good ones…for about 1/4 of the price, too. Shame you have to go there to get them! ;)

    Mars Pods Smores

    Twinkies and Pop Tarts

I love junk food, but could not find stuff that tasted more meh.

Does anyone remember the Nutella donut craze last year or so? I like donuts and I like Nutella, but combining seemed ordinary. Every shop seemed to start to try and sell Nutella-infused something or rather, and I'm sure there were some Nutella on-sale threads exploding on here at the time.

  • Goliwogs - those that know these understand that they were the shit back in the day. They did bring them back as skaliwags although just didn't hit the spot.

90's Smith's BBQ chips - again the flavour they currently are is yuk. The closest to the old school flavour is the aldi BBQ chips. They taste ok a bit peppery though.

  • Waiting to try Five Guys when it opens up in Aus, hope I don't get that "meh" feeling because it was damn good when I visited NYC a few years back.

American chocolate that you hear a lot about (Hersheys, Reeses etc.) Its basically a block of sugary wax and tastes nothing like the chocolate we have here…

    • +4

Americans are used to butyric acid in their chocolate, which is also found in parmesan cheese and vomit. It's created due to a chemical process to extend the life of milk. This is required because their dairy farms are farther from the chocolate factories. Americans have come to expect this taste in chocolate that the acid is added in anyway even if the process is not required.

Here's a video on Qi where I got the info from

    • I hate Hershey's but find Reece's not too bad.. because it just tastes like peanut butter & sugar :)

      • +1

Not a fan of reeses mainly because American peanut butter also tastes weird, or maybe im just used to the stuff we have here. Homemade reeses is so easy and tastes 100 times better :)

Gaytime Icecream (in the tub) So much hype, as soon as it was released, I went straight to Woolies! 🙄 Its not the same 😂

    • +3

      Oh I miss Toobs! 😞😭🥺

      • Yes! I once signed a petition to bring back the Toobs that was successful, but short lived.

        • +2

😭 I remember that. Dont understand why they would remove it.. they taste so good, better than the others in the Woolies chip aisle atm 🙄 Give me Toobs and Ruffles any day

      • +1

        Toobs and Dixie Drumsticks. :(

  • Grainwaves (Green ones).
I used to love them years ago, but now it tastes different to me. Did they change their recipe coz the old ones were much better.

    • They used to have more variety of flavours. Now it's just two, including the sour cream and chives. I don't know if they changed the recipe, but they aren't too exciting.

I live in the US now and was really excited to try a Pumpkin Spiced Latte when autumn 'started' (about halfway through Summer haha). It was disgustingly sweet, I felt like I was drinking a cup of diabetus.

  • American-Style pizza. All my yank mates talked up how 'awesome' their pizzas are.

yeah, nah. Horridly overfilled with cheese (seppos LOVE their cheese), and just overall bleh

  • For the most part Oreos..Just don't care for them.

Twisties no longer excite me as I find they no longer taste as good. Found out Pepsi Co own them so that's most likely why.

Also Burger Rings have changed..They're not as bad as Twisties but they're not like they were in the 90s.

  • cadbury marvellous creations. on paper it sounds amazing because i like the wacky cadbury flavours like turkish delight, black forest and rocky road). but the frankenstein taste of marvellous creations is just foul

  • Rebel Whopper

    Dr Pepper

  • I tried some Taro Chips when I went to Fiji

They had about as much flavour as tofu flavour multiplied by zero.

  • +1

The first time I had Pringles I was like, meh

  • Darrel Lea's Rocklea Road Creamy Chocolate ice cream. Promised me "bursting with marshmallow, peanuts and coconut". Provided hard choc chips and tasteless mashmallow. Didn't come across one peanut!

  • +4

I love supermarket donuts but hate Krispy Kremes….they just taste so bad.

    • +1

I'd agree, I've found Krispy Kremes and Daniel's Donuts overdo it to the point that it doesn't taste like a donut whereas traditional donuts such as "Mr Donuts" (Woolies) keep things simple but effective.

  • +1

Krispy Kreme donuts. I was expecting more from the hype but they have the same artificial taste that you find in other supermarket donuts.

    • +2

The glazed ones are good. Supermarket brands have tried but can't come close to the glaze technique and KK freshness. But all the other donuts with various toppings I would say are nothing special.

  • Pork crackle, crumpets, and pretzels

Not a snack, but when 'Michelin starred' Hawker Chan came to Melbourne.

Don't get it wrong, it's nice. But so are many other Chinese Roast Duck/BBQ places in Melbourne.

It's no better than many others, but portions are much smaller and is more expensive. Tried it twice, just in case the first one was an off day for the restaurant and I got smaller than usual piece.

The only reason why they are popular is because their Singapore branch received a Michelin star.

I'm not averse to paying $200-300 for a memorable meal, but I do think Hawker Chan is expensive for what you get.

    • agreed

    • Absolutely delicious, on my after lock-down list. But you're right, the serving size is for entrees.

      • I agree it's delicious but is it better than other good Roast BBQ places in Melbourne?

  • Mountain dew diet.

  • Vegemite!, was better when Kraft made it.

  • Nutri-Grain choc malt and Sprite zero were my two fond memories as a child

  • +1

If you guys haven't tried Ritz Nutella, should try em.

Shin Ramyun noodles were abhorring when I tried them.

  • KFC Tower Burger. After so many ads showing a tower (higher than it was tall), it felt a big letdown as a kid to get something quite flat and clearly not a tower at all.

I did enjoy Maccas shaker fries from that era though.

  • Surstromming. I was promised a tasted sensation. Not so!

  • I feel nauseous just from skimming through the comments

  • +2

As you grow older… all fast food…

  • +1

Pods, I feel by all rights should taste way better then they do… every few years like a fool I buy a pack and I'm always left disappointed.

  • On my bring back list:
    Kettle herb & spice

  • Oak Cinnamon Donut flavoured milk
    Angry whopper

    • Angry whopper is delicous

  • Also, what foods do you wish they'd bring back?

Not really bring back but KFC need to change their sweet and sour sauce back to the original..
