I'm not sure the warranties would be valid if purchased from ebay sellers, though.
I've never been asked for proof of purchase. Just filled out the online form and paid for the postage to the Aussie distributor and they have sent me a new one once they received it. Mine were original purchased in the UK.
I have a leatherman supertool that is broken. A colleague not knowing how the locking mechanism worked broke it. The leatherman was a gift from my auntie from the US.
Did not know I can send it in to get repaired here. Thanks for that.
Should be honoured. This is from Knives Online. You will be emailed an invoice like you bought it from their website
An invoice isn't needed for warranty claims. They won't even ask.
Doesn't matter where you bought it or even if you're the original owner. Send it in, they will repair or replace it. That's one reason why they're so expensive.
My son snapped the screwdriver on my Wingman once. Sent it in. New wingman arrived not long after.
It is. You pay for it, but they don't stuff around.
It says 25 years on site. Must have changed.
I'd be curious how many people actually use most or all of the tools on their Leatherman. I've got an early version of the Squirt that I keep in my laptop bag and it comes in handy from time-to-time, but I can't say I've used everything on it yet.
Same. I regularly use the knife blade, screwdriver and the pliers. Not much else gets a look in!
LOL - the one that's had the most use on mine is the bottle opener. That thing has saved Friday arvo drinks more times than I can remember. :)
I have a skeletool that is literally decades old and I thought I got ripped off buying it for $75…. current rrp is an amazing $179.
I'm sure its made in china junk as it has some surface corrosion on it.
I use it for odds and ends in the car when you need a set of pliers screwdriver opening a package or to bash something down.
I cannot imagine using these things worth $200+!!!
I have a Wave+ and i use most of the tools quite regularly. Pliers, scissors, both blades, file, both sides of both screwdrivers, bottle opener on a Friday night. The thing i probably use the least is the saw. A saw that size isn't very useful.
not a Leatherman but a very early version of the SOG EOD Powerlock. i bought mine nicely used from a US ebay seller. turns out it was ex-military and came with a blasting cap crimper. obviously i had no use for that, but i did use the plain blade, the half serrated blade, the saw (rather handy for thicker branches you want to get rid of but have no power garden tools), screwdrivers, can opener (once to test, and it's quite neat), bottle-opener, 3-sided file and pliers. swapped out the 1/4" drive with scissors since i didn't have the compatible bit set. then i learned to solder and found the wire cutters rather good. only once had to use the awl to punch a hole in a leather belt. and because it's such a heavy tool, i occasionally use it as a hammer. i've brought it along on every trip but it now sits next to my laptop
I can offer my 2c, I have a Wave and a Skeletool. I use my Skeletool a lot more and it's nicer to hold and to fit in my pocket. The wave is great for things like camping but most of the time around the house or out on a picnic say, I need a knife, pliers or screwdriver, which the Skeletool has. Plus a bottle opener. And it's lighter and has a more ergonomic shape.
It's easy to just go for the one with more capability but when do you need a scissors when you have a sharp blade? The wave has a wood saw which is good for camping or hiking sometimes but still it's rare to use it. Same with the files it has.
Both great multi tools though! I'm a complete Leatherman convert nowadays. You can't fault the design or quality. I backpacked around Europe for over 12 months with a Victorinox and that was great but I like Leatherman more.
Noooo I don't need another leatherman
Oh but you do.
Same. I've always wanted a charge but there's no way i can justify it. It's basically the same as my Wave+ but titanium.
I got one of these from Aldi for $8 a couple of years back. It's great…
Cool story bro
Thanks.
if you bought a multitool from Aldi, it would be called Whateverman
I doubt this one is made of Leather…
But the sheath is….partly.
I’ve had a Charge for ~15yrs and it’s awesome, but I’d never buy again for this sort of money. A Wave is half the price and just as good.
I scored a Rebar for about $70, love it and use it frequently. Could not justify paying more than that though for one of these….
Any recommendations on whether this or the Wave+ for $150? I am new to these but like the idea of a multitool.
There are heaps of models, I suggest you go onto the leatherman website and take a look as it shows all functions for each model. Look at which functions you think you'll need and decide that way.
Other factor is size and weight depending on how you intend to carry it.
Check out the Skeletool. You just need to think about what you'd use it for mostly rather than all the possibilities.
Thanks @Miyagi and @GeneralSkunk for the good suggestions. I will have a look at the website. I think for me it's one of those things where you don't fully realise it's utility unless you actually have one. Others may have some experiences to share e.g. "I bought XYZ but then I realised, I should have gone with ABC" or "yes, I bought it because I liked the idea too but then I didn't get to use it much and it has just been sitting in a drawer ever since".
And yes, I acknowledge that it's primarily driven by the need and therefore different people will have different experiences. I will do bit more reading on this.
So I started with a Wingman and found it very useful, but eventually decided I wanted more flexibility with screwdrivers. So I upgraded to a Wave+ with a bit kit.
@wombat81: I just placed the order for Wave+.
The Wave and Charge are pretty much identical, except for the titanium outer (which serves no real benefit IMO, and actually makes the tool bulkier, albeit a fraction lighter probably).
I have a Charge and highly recommend the Wave (and the charge of course, but not at this price).
Waves have been a lot cheaper than $150 in the past though. I bought one for a mate ~2yrs ago for ~$105 IIRC.
Cheaper models are probably good too, but if you're willing you may as well buy the best and have no regrets.
edit: worth noting that my comments are mostly based on 10+yr old knowledge. a lot may have changed since.
I believe the Charge has higher quality stainless steel for the blades, too. This, if anything, is of more benefit than the titanium outer, IMO.
Possibly correct there, but still wouldn’t justify the extra price IMO.
I've be using leathermen for quite a while. If you want something general purpose, the Wave+ is a good choice. It has a good pair of pliers, good screwdrivers, good blades, scissors and does a bit of everything without the eye-wateringly premium price of the charge. The charge is basically the same but with higher quality metals. Having said that, the Wave+ is already very good quality.
If you don't want to spend that much, a Wingman is a good starting point. The screwdrivers aren't as good, and it had a combo straight/serrated blade, but it's a very handy tool. It has spring pliers, which the Wave doesn't. I fine the Wingman pliers very nice to use even though they are apparently lower quality than the wave.
If you want something more heavy duty, look at the Surge. Skeletool is also a popular option, but it's a bit more specialised.
Thanks for your inputs. I spent some time reading about these this morning and I think I am very close to pulling the trigger on Wave+ however a lot of forums/ Youtube comments suggested that Victorinox Swiss Army Swisstool Spirit X is built better and therefore a recommended option over leatherman.
Victorinox vs Leatherman is a preference thing. I have SAKs and like them but i prefer Leatherman multitools over Victorinox. Having said that, i don't think you'd be disappointed with either.
Missing the ZRex, appears to be discontinued, to stash in my kids' cars for emergencies.
I wonder if the fabled Leatherman warranty covers the leather pouch? Mine's been buggered for ages due to corrosion. I never go anywhere without my Leatherman Wave….fantastic product made in the U.S.A…..oh yeah…where do you send the knife to? Thanks in advance.
my nylon case has come apart at some seams so wondered the same, but highly doubt it’d get the same warranty as the tool.
" This warranty does not cover sheaths, accessories, imprinting, color finishes, cleaning, or sharpening."
This is the extract from their website.
You send the knife to the Australian supplier which is in Sydney somewhere, from memory.
I have a Leatherman TTi with bit kit and extender, a Skeletool with bit kit and extender, a Wingman, a P4 Squirt And a Victorinox SwissTool Spirit. I’m a bit of a multi tool whore lol.
I like the TTi the most but carry the Skeletool more often. The Victorinox has superior superior F&F. All are well regarded in the multi tool and EDC community.
It all comes down to what you plan to use it for. Leatherman’s warranty and customer service is incredible. What's F&F?
Fit & finish.
I heard the lifetime warranty on these was amazing
