GearWrench 9901DBE 12pce Flex Head Combination Metric Ratcheting Spanner Set $99 Delivered @ Total Tools

70

Its difficult to tell if this is the usual total tools price or if it's a sale.

Reason for being usual price: can't see any "sale" signage on the website next to this item.
Reason for being sale: well…looks at it's price compared to anywhere else online, next best price i have found was $170

Regardless, this is a great deal for a flex ratcheting spanner set from a reputable brand.

Also, as this hits $99, it gets free delivery, win win.

rewards dollars: if you have purchased from total tools before you may have some reward dollars banked up which can further lower the price. I got this order for $94 ($5 in reward dollars), interestingly it still gave me free delivery, so the free delivery must be applied before the reward dollars apply.

  • I got a set of gearwrench standard ("fixed head") ratcheting spanners a few years ago for a similar price when the flex head were about the same price. My reasoning then was that I'd not appreciate the lack of rigidity with the flex heads (plus I think 2 or 3 less spanners in the kit). I understand that the flex head can go where standard spanners can't but my question to anyone with a set is: do you really find the flex heads useful?

    • do you really find the flex heads useful?

Sometimes. I have them and sometimes they are more painful than the fixed ones. The fixed ones are slightly angled anyway, not 100% straight. But sometimes the flex head is just painful as it is really flimsy.

      • Would you have bought them with this hindsight?

No. Do I still use them? Yes, at times but I avoid it if possible. The not rachet end is handy to hold the other end of a bolt, but the ratchet end is a bit annoying.

@geekcohen: I agree with you. After using them a few times, I ended up welding them in place.

            • @jimojr: Thanks folks. That was the panacea I needed to get my mind off these things once and for all.

      • Fixed head 'usually' have an angle (offset) as it's generally more useful, but you can absolutely get 100% straight spanners.

I'm guessing you aren't into wrenching on small cars. Flex heads are a massive benefit in a tight engine bay.
I've never noticed the rigidity being an issue

I recently replaced some sway bar bushings and was cursing myself for not having a flex head in 13mm. FFS

        • +1

Fair enough. I suppose they wouldn't make them if no-one found them useful. The day I have a situation a flex-head would actually make life easier I'll think about them again.

I have some old skool offset ring spanners I like more than my flex heads.

    But….

Offset ring > flex head ratchet > non-flex ratchet

Yeah I said it, non-ratchet ring offset more useful than ratchet….

Mainly cos I also own sockets.

Their for different uses….sure they can all turn a bolt, but their uses are for different applications.

I've found that when working on automotive, 90% of the time I can get away with just a socket set or offset ring. However it's that other 10% of the time where there is a hard to reach bolt, with next to no clearance and with other parts in the way forcing you to not be able to use a socket, that's when the flex head ratchet comes in useful.

And also unfortunately from my experience, it's always that 1 bolt that takes 90% of my time.

Says out of stock when actually try to order it, store page doesn't though and can add as many as you want to cart.

    • It's still showing as in-stock for me, can get all the way through to checkout…perhaps the store you have selected is out of stock?

  • Thats a killer price . Flex head specilaist tool but certainly come in handy . Any decent pro mechanic has a set

  • biggest downfall is the flex head is so bulky. So bulky that if i can get the head onto a fastener i may as well use a socket.
