I'm 33 I wanted Segway Ninebotand showed the picture to my wife.
My wife said what are you Thirteen

    • +11

Wanted one for so long. What chance do I have man.. sigh ? I'm 44. Haaha

      • +6

        I m 50 and I want one just as bad 🤣.

        • +15

I imagine these 2 toys are too slow anyway for the sort of middle aged guys who find them interesting.

At 33 with a wife if you want this sort of thing, the medium term solution would be to achieve daggy dad status.

I've got a 71yr old mate who owns a Ninebot One Z10 unicycle and confidently rides it at top speed…. at that sort of age though, you stop looking like a loser and start looking like a champion.

I am 43 and I got one. It’s awesome for quick grocery shopping

        • Do you just take it into the shops with you or do you lock it up?

          • @jaypee06: You can just lock it with a bike lock anywhere. Put groceries in a backpack.

      • 53 here, I have a Kaabo Mantis Pro being shipped. I rode my wifes Mi Pro 2 (she uses it to get to/from work and to the shops etc) and while unimpressed with the lacklustre performance, I was amazed at the versatility and had to get a scoot :) between her scoot and our push bikes , we haven't used the car for 2 months and I am seriously thinking of selling the car and using a car share if I have the occasional need of one.

Just scoot on smooth pavement for the old back haha

  • what's the e-scooter law in Tasmania?

    • This is illegal being too fast and too high wattage

    I’m waiting for a deal on Segway Ninebot S Gokart Kit… https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/segway-ninebot-s-gokart-k…

  • +3

Just a heads up, E22 is inferior to ES2: lower top speed, smaller range (newer ≠ better)

  • +2

These are pretty cool. If I lived and worked in the city I'd actually get these.

The eskates look like a fun way to get in a coma but I want them.

  • +1

Is NSW ever going to legalise these

    • Honestly, at this point, you could probably just buy one in NSW anyway. There's a ton of people who ride them around the CBD without consequence. All you need to do is hope you don't run into a coppa who is having a bad day/highway patrol doesn't need a funding run and you're basically fine?

      • +3

The general rule with cops seems to be as long as you're not being a dick you're probably fine. I have a mate who is a cop and he rides one to work :)

    • +6

This poor sod got hit with 4 fines, $2300.

      https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/9z80jqx9

      • +5

Oof…the comments on that thread are so overbearingly condemnatory…
I mean the lack of empathetic reception on it's own must have sucked just as badly as the dang fine, itself..

        • +7

          Come on man it’s WP.

Worst place on earth to go for advice on anything unless you’ve never done a thing wrong in your life.

          • @spuderump: Whirlpool is also great for people who post massive complaints about things/places, only for it to then come out that it's their own fault and they're just looking for an out.

        • What is there to be empathetic about exactly? They've just posted a whinge that they got fines doing something they know is illegal, and have provided zero responses to peoples questions. Yes these things should be legalized as a mode of transport, but even then they'd still be up for the same fines because they shouldn't be on the road.

          • +5

@dav3: The size of the fines is ridiculous.. (Comapred to the "crime").. I also wrote a reply in the thread -> He deserved to get stung for the lack of helmet.. But the other ones are a stretch. Legal or not, doesn't make the laws less ridiculous.

It's Whingepool. What do you expect? Everyone is a saint on there..

            • +1

@Maz78: Electric scooters are classed as motorcycles in NSW, they got the same fine as anyone else riding an unregistered motorcycle while unlicensed and without a helmet.

              • @dav3:

Electric scooters are classed as motorcycles in NSW

And e-bikes are not? Would I be OK if I rode one of these e-scooters wearing lycra (and a helmet, of course)/

        • Dupe

        • I never saw that thread, but how do you think people should have responded?
The OP stuffed up big time, are people supposed to curse the police, the system, the rules to show solidarity? Give advice of how to minimise his penalty?
          Why?

        • +1

Whirlpool lol… is that still a thing?

      • Riding it on the road above 25km/h without a helmet.

A lot of people ride escooters, but not everyone tries to be so conspicuous about it, especially when it's still illegal

      • +1

lol, WP. Never waste time even by just clicking "whirlpool.net.au".

I have been using this daily for years now around wolli creek, sydenham, redfern, marrickville, alexandria and never had a problem. Stopped several times during traffic close to police car and they will just smile at you.

        • Whether you have been booked or not is irrelevant. It's still illegal.

      • +1

That's why you gotta take the advice of the guy who posts here about riding away from the police - they can only fine you if they catch you 😂

        • and just hope they don't deploy the K-9 unit

    • Everyone already uses eletronic scooters, skateboards and skates all over melbourne

        Hello friend

  • +1

Good deal if you want the bonus skates which look fun. However, electric scooters are illegal in NSW except on private property so there's no point.

  • Those skates look great for taking the dog for a light stroll.

    • +2

      Or you could.. Exercise.

    • +5

you'll need to buy two pairs for the dog, though

  • Are these legal in Melbourne?

    • +8

Mate, nothing is legal in Melbourne. We can't even go more then 5km from our homes at the moment.

    • According to this, no for the scooter.

The skates might be legal though.

Shame. I've always wanted a scooter.

    • No, they want you to buy cars, maintain them, pay tolls and parking, buy petrol, insurance, registration and pug bobblehead dash toys.

      • +2

        pug bobblehead dash toys

Heeey, what's wrong with pug bobblehead dash toys?

      • At least we don't have to take out CTP like NSW does :3

        Yay for the TAC :)

  • +1

No, this is not a good deal, last year I got the Ninebot Max for the same price.

This scooter has only 20km per/h Max Speed and 22km Range. Are you serious?

    • +2

This is heaps, I could ride around my backyard 440 times and would definitely crash if I hit 20km/hr on the straight.

    • Not everyone needs fast and heavy. If you're using this as last mile for public transport, lightweight is more important than raw speed.

      • +1

Dude, you talking about a 22 km range vs a 80 km range.

        • And? What if I only travel 3km's a day? Why would I pay twice as much and lug 50% more weight if this does the job I need it to?

        • +3

Why would a scooter need an 80km range? that's like going Melbourne to Geelong on a scooter.

          • @ialam99: I have a Ninebot ES2 scooter and the advertised range is misleading. You can only get close to the advertised range if you operate the scooter on the lowest power/speed setting, which is painfully slow.

On the ES2 at a legal 20-25kph on flat paths, I only get just under 12km of range. That’s despite the advertised range being 25km. If the E22 is similar, then you’re gonna end up with less than 10km of range which is really pushing the use cases…

  • Given the are illegal in most places like NSW. Where can you ride them without a fine. Only on footpaths?
I saw post about someone being fined $2000 for riding on the road in Sydney.

  • Lol at the description! Yes the eskates are another way to injure yourself, case in point me. I’m nursing a broken toe, from wedging my foot between the skates and the sofa. But no complaints about the product, brings me back to my roller skating days and I love them.

I bought this kit last time they had the deal going at JB Hifi - and gotten plenty of use since then from both the scooter during lock down and skates at the skate park. Worth it imo

  • +1

I've owned an ES4 for about 2yrs now (recently upgraded to an Inokim Ox) and it's a good entry level scooter. Note the E22 is a downgrade in most regards. This is a good deal if you find value in the skates, but if you're actually in the market for an electric scooter IMO you'd be much better off getting something that fills that gap better.

  • Is there an easy way to derestict this E scooter?

    • Speed can be increased to 28km /hr easily. Just google it.

      • Actually the 'serial number hack' to increase speed to 28km/hr doesn't appear to be working on these Aussie delivered models.

        • thats a shame, being illegal in NSW, its not worth the risk of fines

  • +1

No deals on the Ninebot Max? there was a deal maybe a year ago, they were selling Ninebot Max for $799.I procrastinated too much and missed out.

  • +2

Here's a review of the skates: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sN6PEdQS1IE (TLDR: not great)

  • +2

What are the chances I will be complimented at the local skate park when I make my debut?

    • +6

It's highly probable that women will be throwing themselves at you.

  • +3

Just thought I'd point out that weight is a big factor. Max weight for most of these scooters is 100Kg.
I bought a m365 knock off with a suposed 350W motor and it struggled except on flat ground any decent incline and it would just die. I am 95kg I returned it.
I bought a Mercane wide wheel which has two 500W motors and I can climb mountains with that thing ( I need to climb a 9 degree incline to get to work, Brisbane has lots of hills).
The power is astonishing. The first time i put the throttle down it felt like the handlebars would rip out of my hands. It is speed limited to 25km/h to comply with qld regs. but if you're feeling adventurous you can bypass it to get it to 45km/h and get airborne over speed humps

The Mercane set me back $1100 at beginning of year and is my last mile commuter to work.I needed something that would get me to work without raising a sweat. Rainy days are a bit annoying but tolerable. Its heavy at 20kg so loading and unloading from car is a consideration. Cornering at speed feels like you're drifting and non pneumatic tires don't absorb much in the way of bumps

    • Thanks I'm 99kgs. with my laptop i can't risk :(

      • +1

Max weight is like used by dates on food. Mostly just a random guess, don't put too much faith in it.
FWIW When I was on holiday in the US I was doubling the missus (combined weight about 150kg) on a Bird rental scooter which are either a Xiaomi M365 or Ninebot ES2 . It handled it ok.
