Travel now, the new Microsoft Flight Simulator has been released recently

    • +3

In all seriousness, the amount of comfort this has brought me is incredible.

I'm about 25 hours in, currently cutting a figure 8 around Victoria and the high country (YMMB - Prom - Malacoota - Kosciusko - Bright - Yarrawonga so far!)

I encourage everyone with cabin fever to try it. And in true OzB spirit it's $1 for the first month!

      • +2

Do you need a pretty spicy computer to run it?
Also how is it $1 for a month?
        Cheers 😊

        • game pass

        • I have a 3600/2080super

I get about 40-50 FPS with most things on ultra/1440p

        • +3

          "spicy" lol

My CPU is a 6700k (highest spec i7 about 3 years ago) and a 1080TI (highest spec about 2 years ago). Not a brag, just saying my hardware is 2-3 years old and still runs pretty well on ultra settings.

It's $5/mo after the first month, but that's still a bloody good deal I reckon!

      • How do I get the $1 deal?

      • +3

FYI the game takes up 150GB of storage space.

With Australian internet (thanks to the libs 🙄) it might actually take you less time to fly OS in RL rather then download the game.

I’d wait until there is a vaccine before travelling internationally.

    • +35

I'd wait for the masses to also be vaccinated before I decide to travel. Imagine getting caught out in a lockdown. Perfectly healthy but stuck.

    • +2

There isn't going to be any international travel until there is a vaccine anyway.

      • Definitely not true. We will be able to travel. Getting insurance will be patchy. We will most likely have to quarantine. There will be restrictions on which country we can go to.

But we will definitely be allowed to travel without a vaccine unless the vaccine comes in the next 6-12 months in which case most points are invalid.

        1. Assuming there will be a workable vaccine

        2. No international travel is only for Australians. The Europeans, English and Americans are jetsetting as I type this.

    • +7

      Lockdown?
      Isolated?
      Trivago

    • Will you take it without seeing actual results?

      • +3

By 'seeing' what do you mean? If you're a conspiracy theorist then you'll just say the results are fake anyway.
        Yes I will get it.

        • Yahoo news claims that you get a bribe if you dare..

    • +1

Think I'll wait a few years after they release the vaccine. Can't say I'm exactly keen on jumping onboard a rushed project to become an earlier adopter/beta tester with my body on the line.

      • +3

Covid-19 has your body is on the line, whether you like it or not. You've gotta weigh up the risk of catching the virus vs the risk that the scientific community has stuffed something up. The consequences of either are dire.
I personally trust scientific methods, and I'm eager to socialise with friends, family, and go to events that would increase the risk profile of catching the virus. But each to their own.

        • Well this might interest you..

It takes a long time to develop a new vaccine – usually between 10 and 15 years. Vaccines go through many phases of development – including research, discovery, pre-clinical testing, clinical testing (which can take up to seven years) and regulatory approval. Once the vaccine is approved (another lengthy process of up to two years), the vaccine is then manufactured and shipped to where it’s needed.

          Source: betterhealth.vic.gov.au
          https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/healthyliving/vac…)%20and%20regulatory%20approval.

Given that it normally takes this long, I can't say I'm optimistic they can produce the same safe outcome in just 10% of the time (estimates are 1-2yr atm for C19).

Based on the current statistics of C19, the demographic I and most people fit into.. The risk of mortality from C19 is low BUT, that's not to say there isn't a risk at all and higher risk for some groups of people. For me, I will take that risk over a rushed vaccine.

While I also have trust in the science community, I'm deeply troubled when I hear shocking and systemic problems within the community that has been raised by Bret Weinstein (biology professor) on a recent Joe Rogan podcast.

I know it's a lot for me to ask of you, but if you can spare 15 min to listen to a critical part of the podcast JRE #1494 - Bret Weinstein. I have time stamped it for you so you don't need to listen to the entire thing, however I would suggest you do if you can. Honestly this information, blew my mind and I still can't comprehend why nothing has been done, no media coverage or government intervention has taken action. Can't express my disbelief enough!!

    JAPAN ALWAYS JAPAN!
    i wanna goto kyoto

    • +12

We were there in the second week of March, it was amazing.
At the Kinkaku-ji (golden) temple there were 3 people at the prime viewing spot. With no (mainly Chinese) tourists the place was empty. Lots of Japanese travelling and touring though which was nice to see.

      • Damn that would have been awesome.

      • +23

        I'm very jealous.

Majority of Chinese mainlanders are so rude and pushy too.

        • +4

It comes living cheek to jowl with so many people. Zero f's given at all times.

      • It's been great, hasn't it!

    • We had a full vacation booked from mid December over new years. We had booked our accommodation in Kyoto for new years eve Party, waiting to see if JAL cancel flights so we can get a refund. What a shit year for travel

    • +1

We go to Japan almost every year, and went to Kyoto last trip (July 2019) and it was full of Chinese.
      Nara was the same.
I remember the times when there were half the tourists, they were the times you could really explore.
I've been 18 times and was meant to go again in March but that was cancelled.

      • +14

18 times are you not part of the problem.

        • Huh? What?

          • -4

@DazMon: You insinuated it being full of Chinese (tourists) as a bad thing yet you are a very frequent tourist to those same spots.

Just hypocritical, if not then racist.

            • -2

@Andrewskates: true. best not to generalise. Chinese tourists are fine in my opinion…let's not let underlying media discourses and poltical power struggles lead to reactionary and impulsive racial generalisations. try not to swallow b.s.

              • @biozet: There's always the few that tries to skip you in the queue, shuffle their feet right into your shoes and are pushy. It stems from the culture and I don't think it's racist because a lot of Chinese people are friendly. That behaviour is normal for them having grown up and lived in an environment full of people.

                • +2

                  @Techie4066: like woolies everyday then

                  • @petry: Maybe just a tad more pushy, absent-minded discourteous?

                • +1

@Techie4066: Yes I’ll agree with that . And with the observation it’s a crowded and competitive nation ..good point

            • +5

@Andrewskates: Errr I'm not really a tourist, if you must know my wife is Japanese and I mainly go there to train karate and visit friends & family.
I can see that Chinese tourists are vastly different to any other tourist.
Go to Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Nagoya, Kobe, there are none.

              • +3

@DazMon: Yep. I remember seeing a bunch of them snapping branches off the cherry blossom trees. Disgusting behaviour.

        • I get a neg for replying 'Huh? What?'
          WTF?

        • +2

I do not understand how this place works, you can get 8 positive votes for calling me 'part of the problem'.
I visit Japan almost once a year, always changing the season.
I visit family & friends, karate dojos.
I take 1 full suitcase of gifts for said friends.
I save up and spend big whilst there.
I plan to visit a site/city or 2 that I have visited before (over the last 20 years).
I bring back gifts for my friends & family.
I pass on authentic Japanese karate and culture to Melburnians.
And yet I am 'part of the problem'………….

      • +4

        @DazMon

went to Kyoto last trip (July 2019) and it was full of Chinese.

        It's not just Japan.

All of Europe's tourist hotspots were exactly the same when I toured back in 2018. Hell in Germany, numerous high end boutique stores had Mandarian-speaking translators on hand because of the volume of Chinese tourists shopping in them.

      • I was meant to go in April and it would have been my first time Japan and a valuable experience I needed but same, cancelled.

    • +3

Unfortunately the groups of Chinese tourists have made many of the famous attractions unpleasant to visit. Fortunately there are so many other cool places to visit in Kyoto that aren't so well known
      .

      • The thing I notice about 'this particular tourist' is they cannot speak 1 word of Japanese.
Not even some courteous phrase to smooth things over.

Taiwan has the best food in the world 😋

    • +21

You must have to everywhere in the world to said that ? lol 😂

'The National Socialism Association (Chinese: 國家社會主義學會; pinyin: Guójiā shèhuì zhǔyì xuéhuì) is a far-right political organization founded in Taiwan in September 2006 by
(Chinese: 許娜琦), at the time a 22-year-old female political science graduate of Soochow University. It is headquartered in Taipei. '

'The NSA idolizes Adolf Hitler and often uses the slogan "Long live Hitler!" while imitating the Nazi salute. This has brought condemnation from various Jewish human rights groups, including the Simon Wiesenthal Center, who condemned the NSA on 13 March 2007 for championing Hitler and blaming democracy for Taiwan's "social unrest".[4]'

      • They have some pretty killer bat soup

        • yum

      • I'm not into bat or monkey, thank you very much.

      • +1

China has nice food, i agree but Taiwan is a awesome country

    • +2

No way. I was there for 2 weeks in 2009. Got sick of the food one weeks in. Don’t get me wrong i went there because of the food and night markets etc and I still crave Taiwanese food from time to time but I find that a lot of their food are deep fried and I can’t do deep fried stuff for 2 weeks straight.

Personally I like japan the most for food. The variety and quality is next level.

    • +4

I flew to Taiwan and stayed there for 3 months in April. Got back to Aus last month. It's great there.

    • +1

      Awesome dumplings 😀

    • it is supurb. singapore also has an eclectic mix i think.

    • -2

The best food in the world is in the USA.

Don't believe me, just check how many obese people are there!
And if that point don't convince you, well, I would say USA is the melting pot of the world. It is the most multicultural and ethnic infused nation. You name it, they have it (and supersized).

Though my next best picks would be:
      - Team East: Vietnamese by a decent stretch, Japan gets the commendable silver.
      - Team Middle: Indian wins hands-down with its variety, Sri Lankan for a distant second.
      - Team West: close horse race with Iranian, Turkish, Syrian cuisines basically tied.
      - Team North: Italian hands-down, French cuisine for a distant second.
      - Team South: South African probably, silver medal goes to Zanzibar cuisine.
      - Team Latin: Peruvian has high regards, Mexican cuisine is a close second.

                @Headless: Why don't we go

                Down to Ko-ko-mo ?

              • @Headless: Hahahaha love it

            • @Lanushi: I went there because of the ear worm song. Got charged a bridge fee.

              • @payless69: But was it worth it?

                • @Lanushi: A tick on my bucket list after seeing Key West and find it a bit underrated. A while before explored Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Puerta Plata, the canal, Cartahegna, Falmouth, Limon. Titusville, Tampa amd the Everglades. Eventually your mind fills with scenery. Turned around before paying the carpark at Key Biscayne.

  • Have a fully paid holiday on hold to Thailand (although I shudder to think about the fare difference for airfares which takes it from a bargain to a deal I wouldn't have bought) Missing skiing in Canada lots. Really don't think it will possible until at least 2022.

        • +2

          A little pedantic, no?

      • +8

Wuhans more safe then America atm

The most murderous and authoritarian state in human history; currently in the middle of their 3rd or 4th genocide since WW2 and a state where arbitrary arrest, detention and summary execution without charge is a fact of life, is safer than a country where a few horribly-managed cities with overtly corrupt local officials/politicians are currently experiencing riots, which have resulted in a combined death toll of 32 since May 2020?

Excellent logic, comrade. 50 cents have been deposited into your account.

Japan. I was planning to go in March and again in Christmas this year. I'm just grateful I went last year at least.

We left AU on Feb 29 this year after much deliberation. It was wonderful (first time).

AusGov issued the "make plans to return home" directive the Saturday before we were scheduled to fly out on the Monday so we got our full planned holiday in and without many tourists around.

Some stuff was closed (Tokyo Gov't Buildings, Megaweb, Suzuka circuit etc.) but lots was still going and Kyoto was business as usual.
