The best thing about Hydrophobes is that'll they'll die of dehydration really quickly.

    • ha ha! Hydrophobes are the only type of intolerance that is okay, everyone just needs to keep their water particles to themselves right now :')

    • Does this mean I can’t drink while wearing it? I’m looking for a mask that allows me to keep hydrated.

  • +3

So does moisture just pool in the bottom of the mask?

    • Hey Atlas, no they are super breathable. We sponsor a few of the pro cycling teams with face masks and they often wear it between stations with no discomfort or issues with "water pooling"

The material is 80% polyester and 20% lycra, the same as most cycling kit which needs to be super breathable.

Italian Made Hydrophobic Reusable Face Masks

They don't appear to have worked very well in Italy….

"Fabric with fluorine – free water repellent treatment"

Fluorine is a highly toxic yellow gas at standard conditions.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluorine

Anyway, this might stop you getting a fine but unless it can filter below 0.5 microns, it wont do much in enclosed spaces

    • +8

That's why it says Fluorine - free, as in no fluorine ;)

      • +3

Oh I see, you meant 'fluorine-free' repellent treatment, applied to the fabric.
Actually it would read better as 'Fluorine-free hydrophobic treatment' for point three

        • +1

Thanks King, I will update for clarity

      • -6

        No it doesn't it says:

@jv: Okay, maybe the dash is confusing, I will amend the description … it is Fluorine free water repellent treatment. :)

          • +5

@Supersonic101: jv is a troll dont worry

They mean teflon or similar polyfluorinated hydrocarbons. This class of compounds are normally used to generate hydrophobic surfaces.

3M scotchguard is chemically similar https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotchgard

  • Ironic that they have mask shortage in Italy.

    • -6

The fluorine in the masks was making them sick.

      • +1

I think they mean Fluoride JV but i think you already knew that, so stop stirring things up

        • -3

          so stop stirring things up

          huu thinks that?

    • +3

They did during the first wave but I don’t think it’s the case now. Factories and workshops not just in Italy but all over the world have been repurposing their production lines to make face masks and other medical PPEs and equipment

I like them claiming they aren't registered as PPE due to time constraints when these obviously wouldn't have been certified in the first place anyway

    • +2

Registering with the Australian TGA is a lengthly process (over 200 working days + for approval process) , and seeing as reusable face masks do not need TGA approval unless they are being used in a medical environment, it just doesn't make sense to pursue the certification.

      https://www.tga.gov.au/medical-device-application-processing…

We have provided various European governments, pharmacies and charitable foundations with these masks, over 80,000 in fact. All of which are very happy with the manufacturing quality.

  • What are the dimensions of the mask?

    • Hey Seb, I just did a quick measure. The width is about 12cm (fabric cover, not including the "earloops) The height is about 16cm. If you message our FB page I can send photos: https://www.facebook.com/asgthestoreau

      • +2

Only 12cm wide? That seems very narrow..

    No nose bridge?

    • +1

Hey Rbc, do you mean those adjustable bits that clamp down on the nosebridge on? These don't, but the stretchy material is designed to "hug" the face, so it keeps air from escaping through the top and sides.

  • -1

Italian made face mask? No thanks!

  • Looks okay but why would you use only 2 layers when WHO guidance on use of face-masks clearly state
"A minimum of three layers is required for non-medical masks"?

    • Hey Makemeonewithnothing

The advice for 3 layers is for normal cloth masks without any special filtering treatment. These masks are not made from cloth, but from a polyester and lycra blend that is more breathable, and better at filtering particles than normal cloth. In addition to this they undergo a hydrophobic treatment that prevents water particles from passing through the material.

This means that not only are these more breathable than normal cloth masks, but they also do a better job at filtering than normal 3 layer cloth masks.

If you would like to see a product demonstration, you can have a look at this video -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1OkS4L9UXU

  • Great deal, been looking for a good quality reusable mask. Can you confirm it is 2 layers as the key product features picture half way down the page states one layer fabric.

    • Hey Keno, yes it is 2 layers - one if the actual fabric and the second is the backing. There is also a hydrophobic treatment applied. This way you get the breathability of less layers, but the protection of more than 3. The health advice is 3 layers for normal cloth masks without any special treatment. Hope that helps

Got my masks today. Decent fit and the comfort levels seem pretty good on first wear. Thought I ordered the plain black but got the patterned ones with logo. Will have to crack out the black texta so i can wear em at work. Happy enough with the purchase..

    • +1

Hey Fredorishi - sorry our team got the order wrong, if you like we can send another 5 pack (with the correct colour) at cost. If you would like to do that please reach out to us on our Facebook page.

      • +2

Actually I checked my order and looks like I ordered the wrong ones. Could have sworn I went for the plain but not according to my order. My bad.

    • How's the breathability? Do they get wet after a while?

      • +1

I'll get back to you on that once I go for a walk tomorrow..

      • +1

So I haven't done any heavy exercise, but here's my initial take. Quality is decent. Breathability seems quite good. It does get a bit steamy under there but they seem to wick moisture pretty well. (Again haven't exercised in it) The mask was generally pretty comfortable for the 6 hours I wore it. Quite light material and ear straps ok. No discernible smell after washing. The only annoying thing is that it slips down (like other cotton masks I've worn) as soon as you start moving your mouth. I'm generally happy enough with my purchase. Maybe 7/10. Would I buy again? Probably not. They will do for now, but The search for the perfect re-useable mask continues…..
