Toshiba **Region Switching** Blu-Ray Player $99 Myer In-Store

460

Myer electronics sale started today - I don't have a list of specials but this one stood out to me.

The toshiba BDX1200ky is $99 at Myer in
Store (NOT online). I can confirm both Frankston and Melbourne stores had stock this evening (Melb had two left, Frankston at least 1). I haven't cracked the box yet but apparently there's a hdmi cable in the box too. Nothing really fancy here, apparently it plays avi and mkv, only outputs are normal composite and hdmi and whatever the black audio out is. But what makes this player stand out for me is that it comes with firmware so you can make it all region for DVD and manually change between region A B and C when you want to for Blu Ray.

RRP is $149, it's at big brown box for $145 right now, or Harvey Norman for $159 if you can find one.

Edit- linked to product description I forgot to nab a catalogue when I left, in-store only, still $149 online. Also not sure when sale ends.

Edit Edit - Thanks Kluger for catalogue link and expiry date.

  • Is there a limit on the number of times you can change the region setting? Do you do it by entering a code on the remote controller?

    • My guess is you have to change the firmware to change the region code, ie a lot of hastle, otherwise they would call it a region free player.

According to this site/forum it allows unlimited changes of region and its a very easy process. you just go into the menu and change the region no restart required.

Many people have installed the australian "region switching" firmware on the French, UK models etc. and it works perfectly

    what is region switching for?

    • +2

      …for switching the region.

    • so you can switch regions.

      @cash8

So you can watch BD sourced from another region, say the US, to take advantage of earlier releases or chaeper disks on offer. It's an innocent question and I don't see why some people are giving you -ve votes. Are they being cynical or just plain negative?

      • thank you. I never knew there were regional boundaries. many others would ask the same question. ur answer will be just helpful. thanks again.

it's on the cover of all DVDs and Blu-Rays

tip for making it region free (changing firmware)

Can it play .mkv files through DLNA though?

  • +1

There is no DLNA and there is a firmware cd included in the box. Takes 5 minutes to setup, not complex whatsoever, you put cd in, press ok once or twice, that's it.

To switch region, goto setup menu punch in a code on remote and change. DVD can be set to region 0, but blu ray needs to be changed whenever you want to watch a different region disc. There's a little blue reference card in with the firmware cd.

    • That answered my question above. Thanks.

Toshiba makes the best players. Still think they should've won with HD DVD

      That's one of you.

      Edit: how's your beta VCR?

      • +4

The Betamax format was developed by Sony, /awkward/.

        • +4

Beta is /was afar superior format to VHS. Pity it was released after VHS and missed the boat on being the standard

        • More of a reference to formats that are unsuccesful at becoming an industry standard than a specific brand. Eg. How's that minidisk player?

        • actually, Beta was introduced before VHS but licensing restrictions limitedt content. VHS is the rival that became the standard that was adopted… anecdotal evidence suggest that it was Sony that forbid porn to be sold on its format and a format was born (similar to how the internet was born.. hmm the big bang theory).

I believe Betamax Pro is still being used in boradcast or some professional industry.

        • Beta had more lines of resolution than VHS but I think from memory the tapes could not hold as many hours of video as VHS. Super VHS came out later and had more lines of resolution than Beta but the Super VHS recorders were expensive and the format didn't really take off.

        • +1

I don't think cliener was thinking that Toshiba invented Beta, he's just referring to formats that got left behind.

        • Spot on Josh81.

still got my xe-1 player… plays hd dvds and upscales dvds beautifully

  • I didnt know there was region switching Blu-Ray Players

    • Yes, but usually the cheap brands (not name). I have one from 2 yrs ago (Allure brand sold by Clive Peeters) which is also region switchable for Blu-ray. Just don't update the FW on the Allure (the latest locks the BR region).

Now I have a Toshiba with the same capability.

Just got mine from Macquarie Centre (North Ryde). There were still two left.

      • Yeah - the only ones that I know of - aside from this Toshiba, and the 3D model BDX3200ky - is the Soniq from JB (although I haven't seen one in a JB for a few months?), and the Kogan blu ray players also apparently you can switch regions on..

You can get Panasonic/Samsung etc models modded, but you will be paying a tonne for them (compared to $99 lol).

  • Got the (reportedly) last one at Canberra Centre. Thanks.

  • Blacktown Myer: At least one left (when I got mine at 1:15pm - I tried calling first to check if any stock but waited on hold for ages, so I just went down. Number is (02) 9671 8200 if you want to try it).

    • sold out when i went there today
forced me to travel to castle hill
according to their system, there is 4 at parramatta and 3 at castle (after my purchase)

  • There were four units remaining after I purchased mine today
at about 12:45pm at Myer in the Sydney CBD. I used a gift card
I had been given, so it only cost me $70! Thanks a lot Jdrizzle!

    P.S.
For those who are interested, they do NOT have the BDX3200KY in
    stock.

  • I need a 2nd blurry player, how's is this compared to the soniq? Does disk load up fast? Booting time.

  • Been watching a lot of DVD's on my housemate's FullHD 51" Plasma (Samsung), i think it's time to get a Bluray player, this looks the best deal, a nice hundo for a good brand, region free!

Was kinda waiting for 3D Bluray players to drop in price, but they're still sitting around $200, so i think i'll bite the bullet now.
    Or, was thinking i could get a PS3, but that's still a $300 outlay.

  • Just got one of these so I can play my US imports - boot up was fast, switch is easy and unlike other input code method I have seen for blu rays can be done anytime from the setup menu. Definitely works - watching Deadwood Region A right now.

Note: the instruction card on how to swap regions is noted for models BDX1200KY & BDX3200KY - which is the more expensive 3d version. Might be useful for those less about price and more about region free.
