  • Thanks OP. got one

  • +3

    I dont need another one right?

    • +3

      Yes. You need another ad blocker, or weather station.

      • +1

        A 4GB Pi4 seems like overkill for that sort of a task.

        • +2

          Price is good though!

  • +9

    I. Don't. Need. It.
    I. Don't. Need. It.
    I don't need it.

    Goddamnit OP. Expect a call from my wife later.

    • +2

      I dont need one either considering i had one delivered 2 hours ago…. But then there's NEED

    • +2

      OP expects a call from your wife EVERY Friday just quietly.

  • Thanks OP got this instead of the other pi 4 8GB deal which is just the board 😷

  • Deal is 100% Claimed :(

  • no stock

  • Well that was quick :(

  • +3

    buy now, regret later

    Is this perfect for RetroPi to enable MAME on?

    • +1

      Yes.

    • +3

      Sure is. Running my raspberry pi with retropie image.

      The Odroid N2+ is better, but it's more expensive and hardly ever goes on sale.

      Even better than that is the Nvidia Shield TV, but that's priced even higher than an Xbox One S. I guess the best option would be a Used Dell OptiPlex SFF using the Intel iGPU, or pay more for a discreet GPU (GT 1030 to GTX 1650).

      PS: some people have gone down the route of using old ex-flagship phones that they buy on the cheap, and using them on a dock. Eg, Samsung S8 for $150 with a cracked screen and worn battery, using DeX for a cheap PC/TV box.

      • +1

        Can confirm. I have a react dev environment running via termux on an old oppo .

        Kinda nice having the display and soft keyboard as well as android apps available to work with files on the go. Then it's just git push, coast 🤙

        One thing the pi4 is strangely good for is iPad pro users. It can be powered and hard wire networked via the usbc port.

        Means no need to make a hotspot etc

  • Back in stock, grabbed one off the waitlist. Cheers OP!

    • How do you do that?

    • I want to know how to do this also please. The only option I see is to be added to the wait list at this price or pay the full price to purchase it now.

      • I joined the waitlest via desktop, not sure if it works via app

    Can U install windows 10 on these?

    • I think you can. Just google it. Eg. tomhardware has instructions how to do that.

    • +3

      Yes, buuuuuuuuut it’ll struggle to work properly.

      Best to buy an ex-government refurbished PC for ~$250 for much better results.

  • Since its so popular here, i must watch some youtube videos about it …

    • +1

      Plenty of YouTube videos on what you can use this paspberry pi for.

  • Noob here, what do you use these for? Plex server? Media player? Game server? Retro game machine?

  • Are these OK for playing HD files? My RPi3 craps out on anything over 1080p. Cheers

    For those that missed out on this deal, check out this Kickstarter campaign from Coolermaster.

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/coolermaster/pi-case-40…

  • it's not a whole lot cheaper than rrp - $23 less.

  • very good platform to learn Linux and try lots of fun projects. Only complain is the IO, 20 years behind the x86 platform on same price level. even you by a class 3 sd, it will read/write like 20m/s on a pi. and the network limit is 10m/s.

    any improvement on Pi4?

    the power consumtion is a big advantage, otherwise buy a second hand mini x86 PC. or spend another 200 and get an powerful Ryzen APU mini pc.

    • Very much agreed, I set up my Pi last week. Knew very little about Linux but have learned so far:
      - Upgrade/Update the system;
      - Install Apache;
      - Install SMB;
      - Install FTP server;
      - Mount & share external drives;

      Above all done in the CLI so getting a fair bit exposure to the shell as well.

      Love it! I think the 4th gen Pi is a bit better with the IO?

    • USB 3.0 / 3.1 Gen 1 added.
      Gigabit Ethernet support added - this time proper, unlike RPi 3.

      It's kind of enough if you run only Gigabit Ethernet at home. But, if you have moved to 2.5Gbps or 10Gbps Ethernet, then it's still behind.

      4K dual HDMI ports support is kinda good, but when both ports are in used, you don't get 4K 60 on both.

    • You can boot from usb. I got an ssd in a usb caddy. Followed instructions from here.

      https://notenoughtech.com/raspberry-pi/how-to-boot-raspberry…

      And as netsurfer said. Gigabit ethernet.

  • +1

    I don't how and what it is used for? I already have few Windows laptop, iPad, Android mobile, not sure what else I need this for…
    I also have couple of Intel i3 desktops sitting around without any use. So is it just another processor/board with small form-factor?
    Really keen to know and learn if it is useful and add value for normal day-to-day life

    • It can be a neat little network server that doesn't consume much power. Setting mine up as a NAS and home automation system atm.

    • +2

      It's roughly equivalent to a Celeron processor, except it uses less power and is ARM based.

      Typical usage:

      • 3D printing.
      • Smart home server (you need something running 24x7), including flashing some smart plugs / globes to remove cloud requirement.
      • Pi-hole (DNS based ad-blocker).
      • Cheap NAS, Home Web server.
      • Simple linux programming.
      • Media server (now with 4K HDMI out support).
      • Torrenting.
      • Anything else where you need to run on linux.

      i3 is more powerful though even if you put it in a proper / tiny ITX case. However, an i3 NUC is better, if you don't mind 65W max TDP (compared to 15W max TDP on RPi 4).

  • Need to work on my e-peen game a little, any deals on the 8gig model?

  • +1

    Missed this one. If anyone is interested with the digikey offer, I bought the 8gb earlier and included the power supply, case, 64gb microsd, and micro hdmi converter. Total of $168.18.

  • +2

    Got one at 5.30pm from the waiting list. Thanks op!

  • Great for retropie
