Synology DiskStation DS1019+ 5 Bay Diskless NAS - $999 + Delivery @ Mwave

80

Cheaper price than recent memory, however with the newer DS920+ out, this is a bit behind the times in terms of performance. Runs a Celeron J3455 at 1.5Ghz, still plenty for 4K Plex Transcoding and an extra drive bay for capacity. Note the older DDR3 memory here compared to DDR4 on the DS920+.

The replacement for this model (DS1021+, literally a DS920+ with an additional bay) is expected next year. If you want storage capacity and very decent Plex performance then this is a good deal now.

Pickup is free in Sydney, $12.95 courier delivery. Melbourne & Brisbane metro is slightly more, and more again to regional areas.

EDIT 13/8: Spotted the replacement model (DS1520+) is on preorder at Scorptec for $1299
https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Network-Storage-(NAS)/5-8-Bays/84506-DS1520plus
New model has 2x eSATA for 5 bay DX-517 expansions, so 15 total drive bays hence the model number.

This model has always been inexplicably priced high for suckers and it's hard to think of anybody who should buy it.

If you're prepared to forgo one bay and $25 worth of ram you can get the 918+ for at least $300 less.

If you want newer and better models they are priced not much higher.

    • Agreed it's overpriced, but it is a 5-bay. With RAID5/SMR1 that's an extra 33% storage. Myself, I opted for the DS1618+. 6-bay, better build/metal, internal PSU, more powerful and barely more expensive than the DS1019+, tho that's at the cost of hardware transcoding and built-in M.2 caching if wanted.

    • hasnt been a decent deal on the 918+ since May unfortunately…starting to think about paying full RRP :/

or you can add $400 more to get 3 more bays for the DS1819+

    • I am after a decent NAS that doesn’t cost me my kidney..lol
Would you recommend any within $300-$400 for home use?
      TIA

      • definitely a TerraMaster at that price range. Best bang for buck.

  • Would love to see the DS920+ for sub $900

Just ordered a ds920+ better of that way and just buy the size up hdd. I have 4x 8tb so will have 24tb useable. More than enough I can always grab and expansion unit if I get desperate.

    • where from, and what price?

  • No world where buying this is better than building a basic higher specced PC for less.

PC and a dedicated NAS device are two different things

        PC is more useful.

          NAS uses ~30W

I run OMV on a cheap i3 with a bunch of drives. Better functionality than these NAS boxes and cheaper

You are not paying just for the hardware. Buying a nas gets you access to a whole new world of vendor and function specific programs.

Another analogy would be Apple. When you buy an Apple device you get access to the Apple ecosystem as well.

      • … or locked in to the Apple ecosystem, only able to do what your new fruity overlord allows you to do.

lock or unlock, depends on what you think. like marriage…

        • I do whatever I can to avoid giving money to Apple so I'm not trying to justify anything, just explain it.

If you only buy the hardware you're on your own. Hard core tech types are fine with that but many others apprciate a bit of customer support.

For people wanting just storage a "PC" running either just Windows or Freenas will be better.

For people wanting to manage media with something like Plex a PC will be better performance.
