What's Something You're Always Willing to Pay Retail for?

It could be something that you consider really good value at RRP, it could be something that just never moves price-wise but you know lasts a really long time, or it could be something you know you could knock a few dollars off with some legwork but just never got around to looking into.

Keen to see everyone's answers :)

    Milk

    • Does this mean retail price on supermarket brand, or does this mean non-supermarket brand?

    • +1

Sometimes I find milk for 20c , same day expiry but they stay good for days afterwards.

  • Property - by that you can negotiate a 'little' sometimes but the 'market' decides the price of a property if the individual does like that fact you either dont buy it or the vendor doesnt sell it. But you essentially always pay what a property is worth unless the vendor is desperate to sell….

Stocks/EFTs/LIC - same principle the market decides what a stock is worth

    • +1

umm hold on, are you saying you wouldn't ask for a discount on the asking price on property?

Same with stocks, do you always by "on market"? Especially for something less liquid, I make the seller come down to my price.

      • +3

if you ask for a discount and they give it to you are you really getting a discount?

Ie Vendor wants 1m for a property

Agent market the property for 1.1-1.5m

You make an offer of 1m or more possible more then 1m ie 1.1m

Your actually paying that the vendor wants

It works in reverse as well

        Ie Vendor wants 1m

        Agent advertiser property for 1.1m

No one is interested (Market dictates it is too expensive)

Time go buy vendor is forced to drop price

Property is now marketed for 900k

        Offer is made

        and sold

there is no discounts on property or stocks

There are obviously better times to buy and sell then others but that isnt a discount that is timing the market

    • huh ? Property is only worth what someone else will pay for it. A valuation means very little especially in todays buyers market for most real estate.

With banks tightening up, many developers are having to sell for less. eg. A potential buyer says they love the house/unit, but the banks won't lend me enough, so here's my offer. I can't increase it.

A real example, in inner Brisbane, from an agent we work with a lot, when asked him about selling one of our houses.

Builder bought land (probably paid too much) & then decided to build a high spec 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom house with family room, double garage & pool & then tried to sell it for $1.2m. He was getting greedy as land cost $590k & spent about $270k inc his own wages on it for 3 months. So it owed him about $890k inc legals. (he paid himself wages of $50k or $3850/week, split between himself & his wife to reduce tax)

Plenty of people loved it, but the pool could have been built later & could have built a smaller house.

Went to auction, didn't sell, as no bids over $950k & the builder wouldn't negotiate or counter offer. Eventually 3 months later, sold for $992.500, after numerous offers in the $900 to $975k range. Think the agent managed to bump up one of these offers. The builder was determined to not go under $1m, but interest payments where chewing their head off & accountant told him to sell ASAP, as market dropping.

    AFL Grand Final Ticket .

    • But there are alway discounted Ticketmaster/Ticketek gift cards to soften the blow

      • Not all events let you use gift cards though e.g. when Harry Potter and the Cursed Child tickets first went on sale

        • +1

Learned that the hard way, however was able to get them to deduct my gift cards via a multi-hour on-hold support phone call.

    • Scalped tickets could be even higher than retail!

You pay retail for used product? That is not the ozbargain way.

  • Tomato sauce - tastes better

Boots, oven, dishwasher, watch - if you buy quality it will last longer.

    • +2

You can buy quality stuff but not retails price, OP question is what things you are paying full RRP.

I would buy all but not at Full RRP

    • I literally just bought top of the line dishwasher and oven and no way in hell would I pay RRP for either as these are some of the easiest items to get good discounts on.

I've slowly been learning not to cheap out on tools. Even though the cheapos will do the job 90% of the time, it only takes one tough job to send you back to the hardware store to get the more expensive one anyway.

    • You should consider how often you'll use it though.

Like if you have to use a screwdriver for the first time ever to change a battery or something, you're probably ok with the $5 screwdriver, and buying a $140 Wera kit would be a waste of money. Unless you're a professional, mid-range will probably last you forever.

Borrowing/sharing is even better. I've spent a hell of a lot on tools I needed for just one job then never again!

      • +2

This exactly. If you make money from your tools, then spend extra on quality, since downtime will cost you more than you've saved up front.
If they're just for home, a short delay & a round trip to Bunnings isn't the end of the earth. Buying ozito with a 5 yr warranty makes a lot of sense as they'll just swap it over no questions asked. Just photograph your receipts & keep them in a dedicated folder on Google drive or somewhere else.

  • Computers I'd prefer to buy from somewhere with a physical store so if things go south after warranty, but before ACCC guarantees lapse, it's easier to get it dealt with.

  • +1

    Haircut

    • Not for me, I don't think I've paid for a haircut for the last 12 or so years. That being said, I just keep it short and yes, I have messed it up sometimes lol

Mattress is where you spent a third of your day. We lashed out for a $3k AH Beard mattress and it’s been great for 7 years. We will update it soon and probably spend more again. Need a reliable workbench, it’s where your best work is done!

I just paid retail on a bar freezer that's not even going to ship until end of Sept but I've been waiting for months for stock and sale price and the two are just not going to happen any time soon so bit the bullet :(
Otherwise I never pay retail for an item. Only sale price!

Haircuts. My barber never disappoints. Started when he was in his garage doing cheap cuts and happy to pay higher for him as he has gotten more established because it's worth it to me.

Certain makeup products tend to rarely go on sale. I am talking the Mecca/DJs type of brands rather than Priceline brands. I also try to only buy brands that do not test on animals.

Due to my age and slightly difficult skin I cannot use cheaper brands for many products (such as foundation or powder). I do try to buy when there is a gift with purchase or during a Sephora 15% off. Some brands though, such as Hourglass just never seem to go on sale so RRP I pay.

  • Cricket bats ( for personal use)

You want to be the first to pick a batch, not the last person with the clearance stick.

  • Pretty much any fresh produce. Like fish, fruit, hot chicks, etc.

    • You can buy hot chicks?

      • Nope, but you can rent them if the price is right :)

  • Been paying retail on following items since longer than I care to admit:

    Wholemeal Bread
    Eggs
    Fresh Milk
    Bananas
    Frozen Vegetables
    Indomie Mi Goreng Instant Noodles
    Tea Bags
    Frozen French Fries

  • I guess people would be buying drugs at retail or higher?

Unless you are bulk buying from Colombia directly, Walter White or have a sick hydroponic setup?

    • Phone contract plans - Even if they offer additional data, ear buds whatever, it's still "retail" price to me. I rather see a reduction in the monthly price than freebies
    • Tattoos, I pay 200 - 220 per hour
    • prescription medicine - dont think you can get a discount on it, I always go for the generic version if possible
    • Hair cuts - Luckily I only pay $20 per hair cut, don't think barbers offer discounts, even then, I wouldn't bother
    • Building a new PC - I tend to buy everything at the same place, even tho some places may offer discounts, I can't be bothered shopping at 4 different stores. After that, if I upgrade, that's when I bargain hunt
    • PlayStation. Never had one fail in 16 years of owning PS2, PS3, & PS4
    • Mouse & Keyboard. Again, buying high quality ones mean they almost never fail. My last Logitech mouse lasted 7 or so years before failure.
    • Fitness equipment. Investing in yourself is worth doing.
    • Bicycle & Cycling accessories. That being said, I'm still salty about the cost of cycling computers a la Garmin Edge 530. It just shouldn't cost that much.
    • Phone holder/cradle for car use. It just makes it so much easier to use google maps.
    • Camera lenses. Depends on the lens but most of them don't actually lose much value over 10 years or so, so if you resell, you can recoup 70% or so of the original cost.
    • Medicine. Better to be healthy than a few cents richer.
    • "Remove Ads" option in phone apps. Can't stand ads.
  • Good cafe coffee.

  • Surgery

  • I can't think of anything I would pay RRP for.
Maybe devondale long-life milk? Haha never on special.
I'll even buy whatever apples are on special per week.

Probably hair cut/foils, mainly cause you don't know how much they'll charge til it's too late ha

  • Anything that isn’t inflated for discount sales figures…

  • Tap water, professional fees (doctor, dentist, hair dressers, etc), prescription medicine, council rates, parking fees, etc

  • stamps

  • Aldi sous vide beef pies. Worth every cent every time.

    • They have sous vide beef pies!?

Their normal crispy microwaveable pies are already fantastic!

Oh yes, and now I know what I'm having for lunch today. Here's some Whirlpooler's critique of the Elmsbury Chunky Beef Sous Vide pies (just search for sous):

        • Just a quick critique I ended up having a Herbert Adams King Island pie as they were on top in the freezer. Not as good as the Aldi ones…
