Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 Gaming Laptop AMD Ryzen 7 4800HS, 512/16GB GeForce 1660TI W10 $2399 + Delivery @ SaveOnIT

160

This may not sound like a good deal, but it is $100 cheaper than other stores. More importantly, while most stores don't have stock until August, this store has quite a few of these highly sought after gaming laptops. Shipping is really fast — less than 2 days from Brisbane to Canberra for me. Plus, you can claim a free game with AMD.
Personally, I think this configuration (R7-4800HS, 512G, 16G, 1660TI) represents best value as both a gaming and work laptop. It is just about 10-12% slower than the 4900HS & 2060 version. The 60Hz QHD screen may not be good for fast games, but perfectly fine for casual gaming. Ryzen 4000 series is blazingly fast as expected:D.

  • What is the battery life like if you were to just be in a work environment, wifi, web browsing, document creation?

    • +2

I get about 8 hours using the Silent mode and several small tweaks. Milage varies though, some on Reddit claim more than 10 hours.

      • +1

Do you have the QHD screen model? I read it sucks more power then the 120hz screen?

        • +2

Yeah, it looks like it. But I really like this screen for content creation. I got a FHD Yoga and I can tell the difference clearly.

      • +1

All the tweaks are listed here - specifically boost and dynamic switching - they work a treat.

I have the 4900HS and whilst not entirely stable with Win2004 - very happy in general.

    4% off.

  • 120Hz same specs (I think) from Shopping Express for $2,289 + delivery, ah no lower end GPU

    • +2

This is 1650ti and FullHD though.

      • I don't see the benefit of QHD on a 14" screen tbh, but yeah lower end GPU

    • +3

OP has a gtx 1660ti. shopping express has 1650ti. 1660ti is much more powerful.

  • +4

    2.5k and not even a 2060?

    No thanks.

    • +2

      No WebCam either.
However this is the best portable gaming laptop on the market atm. Got really good review too.
But I can't justify paying that much for just a 1660ti.

    • +3

For now, the g14 is in a class of its own. Plus, the difference between 1660ti and 2060 is minimal, unless you want ray tracing or so.

      • +1

I'd still prefer the 2060 for $2.5k. That's at least some sort of justification.

  • +3

Aus doesn't get the FHD 120Hz variant which sucks
No web cam not a big deal, but also no page up/down key, white version keyboard backlighting is also sub optimal
HP Omen looks good for AMD

    • 2.4KG though for the HP Omen :(

      • Yeah I'm holding out for the OEM chassis to hit AMD so the aftershocks, metabox's & the like can have good thermal solutions with ultralight for performance 1.7-2.1kg form factors.
Or until the G14 ships with the proper variants! Fair few fan issues on reddit as well for early adopters, I think BIOS patches have fixed it. So perhaps better to wait for them to iron out kinks too.

Will survive on my ultrabook until then & COVID tax settles! Almost bought a XPS13 8th gen i7 for $750 on gumtree but 8GB RAM doesn't give enough of an increment.

The recent dell G5 SE ryzen 4800 deal for $1350 was a bargain. Just way too hot for longevity.

        • Dell G5 was a R5 60Hz screen… based on bad reviews here, perhaps giving it a pass was a good idea

          • @Cisco123: Yeah…the 144Hz screen was $1580.

Seems to be some BIOS issues they need to iron out. Ironically Jarrodstech found that the more powerful G5SE 4800 variant performed slightly worse in terms of FPS than the less powerful 4500 variant with same 5600M GPU due to thermal throttling.

The cheaper G5SE will have a 120Hz soon though replacing the 60Hz one.
But different market as it's heavier still ~2.5-2.6kg

      grey is the way😁

    • But not that portable, there is always a trade off.

    • You do get the FHD120hz variant, but I've only seen it with the 1650ti model so far, shame

  • If only we got the 1660TI and RTX 2060 models with the 120hz screen in Aus. Not sure why Asus only decided to release 3 of the versions here and not the rest?

I'm going to import from bestbuy. Wish me luck

      • What about the warranty? Is it global?

      • So no Australian warranty?

        • Hence, wish me luck haha.

I think I can opt to buy a warranty via Asus once I get it as bestbuy doesn't offer the 2 year warranty that Australian stock has.

          https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-rog-zephyrus-g14-14-gaming…

Besides the fact that this isn't available at all in Australia, after taxes and delivery it still comes out to be "only" $2.5k, I'm taking a bit of a calculated risk with the no warranty thing.

Gun to head, how much is a warranty worth to you? To me… About $200

          • @csider: Good luck. But keep in mind that you can also buy an ASUS premium care package in Australia for 149, meaning you would have 3 years international warranty in total. Don't think you can do that on the US side. Also, as far as reddit goes, early batches from Bestbuy got quite a few issues and some had to return. Australian batches are slower to come, but also the latest and less prone to issues.

            • @machiavellian: Thanks. I've been keeping a close eye on this on reddit and there were some BB issues around the March time frame. Reports since seems to show that these issues are over. Unless my order (haven't pulled the trigger just yet) is found in the back corner of their warehouse and i get a March product in late July.

          • @csider: Are you using some sort of freight forwarder to ship it to Australia or is there a way to manipulate the Best Buy site to deliver here?

            • @fraid knot: forwarding service. you can't "manipulate" BB to ship it across the pacific.

          • @csider: Cost me almost in total $2800 to get bb version. Worth it every cent.

            • @blupool: Please tell me about your experience in getting it into the country! Which service did you use? Why did it cost 2.8k? I calculated + some fat to be 2.5k

              • @csider: Add insurance plus broker fee.

                • @blupool: Interesting. Which broker? Here I am just going to do it manually via hopshopgo haha.

      • How did you buy it from best buy

  • +2

Ahhhgrh. I wish these had webcam! Perfect laptop otherwise.

    • I find it absolutely bizarre that they don't. Even a nosecam is better than nothing.

      • From where I can see, many ROG series laptops don't have webcam. That is certainly inconvenient to many, but I personally don't use it much.

        • +2

Video Conferences are the new normal.

  • +1

Does it have the anime matrix screen?

    • +1

No, it does not. That's at least a $500 difference that I can't justify :D.

  • Not sure how reputable these guys are but the price seems to be the best out there: https://www.jpcomputersolutions.com.au/asus-rog-zephyrus-s14…

    • Looks shady. SKU is for the 1660ti model, but the specs on the website say "2060/8GB/Full HD/2.2kg" (???)

      • Yeah, I'm not fully confident. No one would price match them either.

        • Google reviews don't look so flattery, either.
