Garmin ecoRoute hd Worldwide Cable $81(AUD) Delivered from USA

60

The cable is $79.95 (US) + $2 for basic shipping (which is about $81AUD so say XE.com). If you want courier shipping it is $35-40 to Australia.

I checked with a few places and it is the same cable sold worldwide, here in Australia it seems to go for circa $175-200+delivery.

If you want to know more about the cable there are some details on the official site:

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=38354

In a few words it connects certain Garmin GPS units to the engine diagnostics system of cars with an OBD-II port.

$80 is a good price for it as it usually retails for around $200 here in Oz.

Is this not a cheaper option?

"I bought a USB one ($25 ebay aust stock) thinking that with a laptop it may be better and also more choice of software. It's not.
Also AFAIK using a mini usb adaptor with a usb ELM327 + android device + Torque app will not work. Only bluetooth and wifi.
I have ordered the usb version ($15 ebay ex asia).
I have read reports that the wifi version is the best but is much more expensive.
As far as the ELM327 device itself goes it is good.
Do your research before you buy as it is supposed to work with all cars '04 onwards but some car manufacturers have not complied to the industry standard.
Plenty of info on the net and also interesting utube posts."

    • Well that's a different product.

The Garmin one works in realtime with certain Garmin GPS and also (in theory) integrates with their EcoRoute software to calculate routes which use less fuel based upon your cars actual data rather than using manufacturer quoted data.

While I guess in theory you could get a laptop and do the same things, not sure what the police will say about you driving about with a laptop fixed to your dash though?

There may also be other options for Android phones etc. However I don't have an Android phone, but do have a Garmin GPS (obtained cheaply thanks to OzBargain).

He is referring to a chinese-made ELM327 bluetooth device — it hooks up to your car's ECU and is able to log data in real time.

A generic one sells for $49 USD on Deal Extreme and here is a picture of it working with Torque on Android, but it also supports Blackberry and Nokia.

Torque supports a large variety of ODB devices (except for the Garmin one). The developer however says that the chinese-made devices are of low quality and are not as reliable, but it is much cheaper option.

Just make sure that your car is 100% OBDII compliant before buying this. Alot of Japanese cars are NOT OBDII compliant even though they have an OBDII port…

Garmin do advertise a 7 day money back if your car is one it does not work with it. I guess you would have to send back to the USA though… There are lists of cars it does not work with, including all Renaults if my memory serves me correctly.
