Deal of the day on the WD Red 10TB. No free shipping for Prime but the price is fair - $15 to Perth. Now free shipping with Prime.

Yes we know you can shuck an Elements for cheaper but for those wanting one OOB this is a good price. Not as good as UK deal but doubt that’ll happen again.

Happy shopping.

Better value from this shuckable deal - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/551895 I ordered the 10TB from a previous deal and it delivered in a week form the UK.

I guess it’s good value for a red. But once you add in shipping it’s circa $370 at least for me in Sydney. I’m content with my $310 on the 12tb drive shuck drive today but if I hadn’t seen that already I may have gone for this.

EDIT: As at 9am 16/7, this appears to now have free shipping which makes it a decent deal on a true WD Red.

Might still be better off shucking drives if the 12TB is cheaper. The WD101EFAX may be air filled and not hellium filled. Higher power consumption and reported higher operating noise and temps.

I have four (4) WD101EFAX running in a WD My Cloud Pr4100 Pro NAS (RAID 10 encrypted) plus two spare units sitting on a shelf for an emergency swap out in need. They are definitely helium filled CMR drives and are as quiet as a mouse. I don't believe they (WD) have downgraded the quality of these drives.

They currently operate 24/7 in a warm humid sub-tropical environment and I have never had any issues. They run mid 30 to 38 C most of the time. Mind you large slow spinning fans keep the NAS cool and quiet. So far they have been running 3 years perfectly. If anything, I have overcompensated for potential redundancy.

To the O/P. Good find, Any price that is sub A$400 is excellent value for these drives. The 12TBs are still too pricey at the moment and don't have the bang for buck that the WD101EFAX represents at this price.

Are you sure they're 101 drives? As far as I can tell these drives have only been around for about 6-12 months.
Can you check the spare drives when you have a chance for any breather holes or labels that essentially say "do not cover hole".

  • Almost a month estimated delivery if you choose free shipping.

  • Strange no prime. Even though it's shipped and sold by Amazon Us

    • Yeah I thought so too. I added multiple different items from the sale and the price was the same so…

      • Something something pandemic. The m.2 drive I ordered has taken over a month to get here. As per my original post (which got down voted for trying to point out an easier, cheaper deal), the 12TB shuckable is a much more logical choice. If it’s going into a NAS they work right off the bat. If to PC, a tiny bit of tape on a pin.

It makes no sense to get this over the shuckable, larger capacity, helium filled EMAZ drives. Took only a few minutes to shuck without damaging the shell. It’s not as daunting as it seems.

I believe these are still CMR, just be careful of Reds going forward. "Red" will be SMR and "Red Plus" will be CMR.

    • Yep 101EFAX is CMR
      https://documents.westerndigital.com/content/dam/doc-library…

Suspect the Elements are going to go SMR.

    • how can they still call it a red when it is SMR

      SMR sucks..

they should just call it "archive" disks like Seagate

Not a fan of these HDD companies moving to SMR for larger disks..

    • Wow. WD is still pulling of this BS despite the huge backlash that they received not too long ago?

Why not just put SMR drives in their Blue/Green lineup, instead of downgrading the quality then creating another tier to slot it in

    • For now, Red 8TB and above are CMR. Hopefully WD has learnt the negative image that they gained when they decided to put SMR into their Red NAS drive range.

I'll just keep shucking Element 10TB instead for the WD100EMAZ. They are CMR and helium filled.

  • That's odd, I just went in again and it now says free prime shipping but last night it quoted me $15 or so.

Either way, I've now got four drives for my NAS… probably should not buy anything more until I actually need the space lol.

    • Must've been short lived, back up to $500+ again.
