@cloudie9: Right! I got impatient and bought 2 more adaptors so I can start drives 3 & 4 early. I'd like them all ready for the weekend :)
My first two are now estimating 39hrs due to speed dropping to 105MB/s (outside spindle writes) so I guess that does include both write+read and it will end up settling around 45 hrs like yours. So it's time to get all 4 running and move my other devices down to the USB 2.0 slots :D
EDIT: If anyone is interested in cheap-ish adapters in a hurry, Kmart & Target sell them for $5. I know online is cheaper but I wanted some NOW.
@Click_It: I got the Xiaomi's powerboard lying around and luckily fits the US plug adaptors.
@cloudie9: Great idea, I need to buy one of those. I always passed not thinking I'd have a need for one. Well this is a need for one… Lol
By the way to anyone using these cheap adaptors like me (3 of my 4 are this type) please sticky tape the power plug to the adapter…….. One of my drives just disconnected 19 hours into a surface write! Luckily I'm just setting the last 2 up anyway so now 3 will finish together instead of 2 and it won't set me back. Still annoying though!
@Click_It: Standard DC 5.5/2.5mm 12V, so if you have any 12V AU adapters lying around, as long as >=1.5A, can just use that. Personally was just going to connect some DC plugs to the screw terminals of a single 12V PSU, but so easy to open without damaging, just did that.
Anyone see the article where someone bought a warehouse version and the previous owner had swapped out the 12TB drive? In that case was clear evidence the case had been opened and apparently Amazon accepted the return.
Got mine delivered today by AusPost. It's a helium drive wd120emfz.
How was yours packed? As per usual with Amazon it was in a larger box with no padding, able to bump around in transit god knows how many times.
Will do a surface test but still worried about how hard it has been battered around.
Came in an Amazon box with air padding either side.
Same as mine, with paddings.
@cloudie9: Dam, I thought they skim on the padding, now I'm worried about the condition of the drive, should I contact support?
@yacman: Just run surface test, which will take up to 2 days, and see if it fails or not.
@cloudie9: Only have USB 2 so it is going to take about a solid week, (260 hours left) the drive is sitting at 45c hoping it doesn't get too hot…
HDD is in rubber bumpers, plastic case, soft plastic shells in the retail box. So fair amount of protection. Also, the larger box, larger in all dimensions? Mine the width was tight, so wedged in.
~16hrs for WD diagnostics full scan here. A really bad drive will fail the quick test though, which takes only 2min. Running the dos version though, so only one drive at a time. Last week tested 8 old Seagate drives simultaneously using OpenSeaTools for Linux. Will probably do the same later with badblocks. Def want that running parallel since 4 write+read passes.
Running surface write&read in HDD Sentinel Pro. Maybe it's not the best out there but I figure its good enough.
40hrs per drive give or take 30 mins it seems. That's via USB3 still in cases. Strange everyone complaining about packaging. Mine were both packaged extremely well and all previous orders have been too. Maybe just lucky.
@Click_It: The stock retail drive packaging is totally fine - the soft shells inside the cardboard box are more than enough to protect the drive in shipping.
People are concerned because the retail box isn't protected (some of mine just showed up with zero extra packaging and the shipping label stuck on the front) but there's no need to be.
I received my three drives today. Two were in a single box with padding and one was in a second, smaller box without padding. The fun starts now. Need to do surface test on all three drives. This will literally take days. Not a problem since I'm not in a hurry to shuck them.
Received mine today, it's a wd120emaz.
Hasnt shucked the second one yet…
EMAZ too what's the difference between EMAZ and EMFZ?
@O O: sigh, so I got the worse one?
@O O: Makes sense. My EMFZ had marginally better performance in CDM.
@O O: Some comments in this Reddit post seem to suggest the WD120EMFZ is an SMR drive due to the higher cache, surely that is not correct?
@yacman: From the CrystalDiskMark data shown in the link above, the sequential write is not significantly lower than seqeuntal read. It's unlikely an SMR drive.
and, it's confirmed NOT SMR in an r/DataHorader post.
@O O: thanks for doing the leg work and confirming this
Ran some short tests and here's the result
Interesting - got mine today too and it was an WD120EMFZ
The second one was an WD120EMFZ
got mine today its a WD120EMFZ
Mine still has not moved from order placed :(
Mine took ages to start shipping. Last Thursday night. It’s due for delivery today! (Gold Coast). Hopefully yours will arrive just as quickly.
I ordered 4 in 2 lots of 2.
The 2nd order shipped first and arrived days before the 1st order was even shipped. I now have all 4 and running surface scans before shucking them.
Same. Ordered 15/7 and still not yet shipped :(
Mine was posted this morning finally :D
:( Mine still hasn't shipped. So sad.
Got mine yesterday. Shuck them into NAS right away, no mod required. One thing though, they are really noisy.
No surface test? Daring!
For the surface test is the normal Windows scan ok or should I download a special program
I personally bought Hard Drive Sentinel to do a more thorough test where it reads/writes to every sector but some people are happy using the Windows Scandisk tool (which won't be as thorough due to the nature of what it does vs HD Sentintel).
@jace88: doing this method as well but through USB 2, only 282 hours to go ;(
I normally use HD Tune (you have the free version 2.55 or you can buy the pro one).
This was a pretty accurate program a few years back, I believe for regular hard disks it still does the job. (Disable quick scan though)
Anybody charged twice?? I was charged albeit on hold when I ordered it then when it was shipped I was charged again. Embarrassing when you discover at the supermarket your card doesn’t have enough funds. Both charges are on hold but that ties up a lot of money when you don’t expect it and only have one account loaded on your watch for nfc payment. I have emailed Amazon so will await the reply.
Only charged once for each disk: 1 charged immediately - $310, 1 only after shipping $281 (this was during the short price drop, but was backorder)
Update: After receiving a reply from Amazon claiming that I was only charged once, being the second charge, the first one was released and funds are available back in my account. Wtf? This sounds fishy. I did the purchase through Cashrewards. I wonder if I’ll get my 5% from them now because they notified me of my bonus after the first and now reversed charge.
Never received mine and today got notified my order got cancelled and getting refund. Shattered .
Did yours get cancelled before any shipping notification?
(Was it the $310 or $281?)
Last time I complained when my order got cancelled, and then I got a $30 Amazon voucher (6 months or so ago).
I asked about status to Amazon a few days ago and they said it was still going to be delivered within the promised date.
Just saw status update yesterday (1/8) saying it had shipped, and I checked today (2/8) and it's already in Botany NSW!
Arrived today (4/8/20) delivered by UPS. Unlike the other two WD hard drives I ordered, this came in an Amazon box with air pockets inside too. How nice. It's an EMFZ.
Mine is stuck in the US since the 2/8 and still no update since.
Expected delivery of 26/8 might not be met anymore, according to Amazon.
@johnmelb: Same.
@rainbowyen: Later in the evening on the 13th, it reported that customs clearance process completed and yesterday tendered to local carrier for delivery.
So likely going to receive it next week.
@johnmelb: Efficiency of transport - arrives in Melbourne, goes to Sydney, now waiting to come back to Melbourne to be delivered :-(
Amazon are great. They sent me a power adapter to convert from US plug to AU plug free
I didn't get a plug from Amazon with the first one I ordered.
UK version (WDBWLG0120HBK-EESN) on sale for $304
https://www.amazon.com.au/Elements-Desktop-External-Hard-Dri…
Great find! You should post it as a new deal :)
Yeah but you can’t get prime free shipping, adding postage one top not that appealing
It’s free shipping with prime.
Okay, they have changed the policy then.
Not just that, the $49 minimum spend for prime international shipping appears to count across countries. So if for example you had a $12 US item in your cart, free shipping on that to despite not buying $49+ worth of items from the US.
@rhangman: Never tried this, good to know.
For anybody still following this thread I can inform you that after registration I sent an incident report through the Website after they gave me an automatic registration and they are sending me an Australian Power Supply AT NO CHARGE. Worth the wait.
@cacique: Just wasn't familiar and got a little impatient, and snapped it.
