its ANTI bACTERIAL not viral so no

      • +8

It will kill the virus because the virus is easily torn apart by mild surfactants such as hand soap.

    • +4

      Injection required to be effective.

      • +1

Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't

        • +2

Worth a try. What you’ve got to lose?

    Anyone know if nationwide?
Was using this long before covid19 to rinse shoes and sportswear.

  • My local Coles had all those for $1 each a month ago. All gone quickly.

  • Does it smell good?

  • +1

I can just about cry, bought these at over $7 recently on sale. I am going to put my head in a bucket right now.

    • +11

      Leave us your eneloops!

    • +2

Make sure you add some Canesten.

  • +5

Isn't it the same active ingredient as most disinfectants ie Benzalkonium chloride?

Cheapest way to buy it is as pool algaecide from Bunnings.

BTW it is effective in killing viruses on surfaces just not as quickly as alcohol.

    • +1

Yeah I believe it's effective down to 1.5%, from a govt. document at work somewhere.

Edit: It actually requires only 0.05% concentration for 10 minutes on surfaces.

    • Mild detergent kills the virus instantly why are you using alcohol or chlorine both of which cost a lot and are not as effective?

    • +1

      Cheers, thanks for the lifehack.
Only concern is if there's other stuff in the pool algaecide that could mess with clothing fibres?
Also unsure about pouring too concentrated BC through the washing machine … I could put it straight in the drum but it's recommended for the rinse cycle.
Will do some further reading into.

Also whereabouts did you find out BC kills viruses? I looked into some studies before and read it couldn't. Otherwise I would have added BC instead of extra soap/bleach/h2o2 to the floorboards all these months.

        • Thanks for the link. Am amazed it's being looked at to treat pink-eye. (In very, very dilute, lab accurate concentration though … please no-one pour it in their eyes.)

Given it can break apart enveloped viruses, I'll alternate it back into the floorboard cleaning routine.

      • You can get the stuff from Bunnings that is double the concentration of Canesten. Just dilute it 50:50 with distilled water and you'll end up at the same concentration (minus the lemon fragrance etc).

        • Can I know which particular product on Bunnings that you are referring to? I looked it up, some of them have got added colour which would be deemed useless to wash clothes.

      • The SDS suggests there is a small amount of dye in it - I'd say its just a safety precaution so you know its not straight water.

        Chemical Entity CAS Number Proportion
        Benzalkonium Chloride 68424-85-1 <15%
        Dye <0.1%
        Water 7732-18-5 To 100%

Seems like people have been using it without issue, with a 1:1 dilution. I probably wouldn't use it on anything super delicate.

  • $7 at costco… amazing price but is this WA only?

  • +3

Please edit title - shop specific, i cant find it anyway online in VIC.

    • +2

$7.30 in our state - VIC since Corona still thinks Melbourne is most liveable city in Australia!

  • +4

    was $6

Will be more than happy to pay even at $6 in NSW, normal price $11ish discounted between $7-9.50

  • +1

Strange Coles currently shows Canesten Antibacterial And Antifungal Hygiene Laundry Rinse Lemon 1L on special
$7.30 save $0.90 yet the photo shows the non-lemon regular one was $6.

  • +1

This is a temporary line as Coles doesn't usually stock this scent (only Lemon). Have also seen it en masse at my local Coles for $6 for weeks.

  • 1L $6.99 at Costco, this is a great deal!

  • +1

It's not showing on their website, probably not a nation wide deal

    Does this work on COVID-19?

    • About as well as Forsythia

    • Your usual washing powder works better.

This stuff is just overpriced Benzalkonium Chloride (check the active ingredient at the bottom). The same as what is in a standard disinfectant like this Woolworths brand one which is always $1.39 for 2L. Pretty sure Coles and Bunnings also sell a cheap one.

    • +5

Woolies Active ingredient: Benzalkonium Chloride 1.0% w/v (10g/L)

Canesten concentration of Benzalkonium Chloride is 70g/L.

So Canesten should be priced at 7*$1.39 which it isn't! It's $2.50, a bargain!

      • +2

Aldi have a similar product Di-San Laundry Sanitizer which is 70g/L everyday price of $3.69.

  • +5

Please do not buy and use this product. It is relatively ineffective, and lingers on clothing. Combined with sweat and/or rubbing, this can irritate and actually mildly burn the skin for a lot of people - particularly young children.

    • +2

Also it promotes resistance in bacteria and fungus for when it IS actually useful (e.g hospitals/health care)

A safer alternative is going to be napisan / generic "laundry soaker" with Sodium Percarbonate - i.e oxygen bleach. 40 washes per bottle - @ $2. No need to soak, just half a scoop in with your usual powder. Done.

      • doesn't that fade colours?

        • Hasn't caused any fading in my clothes - and I've been using it for years. Just don't use it for a soak, and I've been using short cycles on my machine as I find I don't need to go for longer ones now as it completely kills the mildew smells.

      • +1

Sodium percarbonate is great. But like bleach I find it can fade colours and cause piling over several washes.
Also I've made the mistake of putting it straight in the drum undiluted. Since the machine takes a while to start and load water, the SP burnt some pretty hideous spots into the clothes, like bleach.
Other than that, I'm a fan.

I can confirm this. I used to use on just my socks to stop athlete's foot (very effective, by far the easiest and most effective treatment). When our kid was very young (under 3) sometimes his clothes would smell and we would wash them with this, was also very effective. Kept using on most of our family's clothes thereafter out of habit, then suddenly at age 5 he got a terrible red rash all over his chest and back. Saw a specialist, he said to stop using Canestan rinse, and when we did it went away within 2 weeks. So definitely don't use this unless you really need it, and don't use it on kids clothes no matter what. So now I only use it on my socks, and then do a washing machine cleaning cycle after that to remove any residue.

  • Still selling at regular price at my local coles (Northcote, Vic)

I can recommend aldi's version at $3.69. It does have a Eucalyptus smell but i don't find it prevalent after washing.
