Less than 3 months to go before iPhone 12 announcement.

      Jesus…time is flying :(

    • +42

      It's just two lockdowns away!

      • Oh you’re very optimistic my friend.

  • Wait for the IPhone 12 series, they will upgrade the basic model to 128gb, which they already did for iPad Pro 2020, iOS 14 with widgets support is likely to increase the size of applications so 64gb may not be enough

    • Seems the majority of OZB don't use storage at all, and put everything on the cloud ;-)

    • Anything else in particular the iPhone 12 is rumoured to bring besides increased base storage?

      • Here's some goss to keep you excited: https://www.macrumors.com/roundup/iphone-12/

        • Thanks for the link, so based on that, it seems these are the key things for iPhone 12:

          • Flat metal edges
          • Smaller notch on some models
          • Increased base storage
          • LiDAR on some higher models for AR capabilities
          • 120hz screen refresh on some higher end models
          • 5G
          • Updated SoC
          • Possibility of all models having an OLED screen
          • Possibility of no charger and cable in the box.

So paying more for a new model that doesn't really have exciting features (unless I missed something obvious?), and removes some accessories. No thanks. Better to buy 2019 models at reduced prices.

          • @Trishool: No type C charging?

            • @vash12: Nope. At least not expected on this years models. Dave2D uploaded a video about this very thing recently on his YT channel.

              • @Trishool: Thats disappointing.

Hopefully there will be some deals on the 2019 model

                • +2

@vash12: We're right now discussing some deal on a 2019 model.

      • Rumored to have more base storage but lacking charger, cable and headphones.

  • Have said this many times
If you cancel in the first month you need to pay out the device LESS any discounts
so you will pay full RRP

    • +2

Not the case anymore since we introduced reduced RRP on the phone on plans. So min cost on 11 pro would be 1499+35 etc.

  • +12

not worth paying around 12% off this late in the cycle, if you're really going to spend that type of money on a phone better off paying the $200/$300 or so extra & get the new model at end of year, least it will be 5g & other upgrades

    • +13

Shouldnt spend $1.5k on a 64gb phone to begin with.

      • +16

couldn't agree more, offering 64gb phones in 2019/20 is a disgrace only Apple can get away with, & up to $2-2500 for a phone worlds gone stupid

        • +1

What you guys use so much storage for? I bought 64gb phone year ago and so far I'm using only about 10gb. If I'd listen to OzBargain and got 128 or 256 version, I'd end up wasting money on unnecessary upgrade.

          • +1

@lubos: the point isn't if you need it or not, it's the amount you are paying & being given the minimum, the minimum in 2020 should be 128gb, 64gb should only be offered on the SE model, which apple know this but instead release in a way it forces you to pay higher, eg: 64gb for the pro next option is 256gb, majority dont need 256 but 64gb is way to small if taking regular pics/vids downloading apps, so end up paying more for 256gb, end of the day thats why apple is $1trillion+ company they know what they are doing

          • @lubos: Which ios are you running?? I just reset an iPhone 7 and that already consumed 8.5GB.

      • +6

I can't believe for that price you're only getting 64gb.

I bought my 256gb iPhone 8 at launch and I think it was about $1100 or something. Phone prices these days are just stupid af.

        • +2

Unfortunately as long as we are still paying these high af prices, prices will continue to go up. Stop buying and they will go down

          • +3

@xbbl: lol, pity we can't get this message out to the non-ozbargain ppl who are happy keeping this cycle going

            • +5

@ryf: used to enjoy upgrading but I stopped at iphone 7 lol, my thinking 8 wasn't worth the upgrade, xr didnt appeal, X was the first rip off release, 11 no 5g ,Pro $2-$2500 like whatever, think iphone 12 (non pro) will be the right upgrade, once every 3-5 years for me now, lost interest as prices dont make sense anymore

          • @xbbl: IPhone margins have been decreasing, not increasing. You can buy a cheap iPhone, it’s just it’s the iPhone SE. Apple is providing options across all price brackets and people are still unhappy.

I keep my iPhones for 3 or 4 years, because apple actually supports phones long term with timely updates. This has actually been saving me money, because when i was on android my 1k+ phone got OS Updates 6 months after google released them, and support was completely dropped in less than two years. Then it goes for pennies on the second hand market because no one wants an old android.

That to me is the real ripoff.

        • +2

iPhone 8 256GB was $1329 at launch. iPhone 11 256GB was $1449 at launch. In USD they were both $849.

          • @Autonomic: Wow, right. For some reason I thought it was $1000, must have been comparing the base 64gb model.

  • with the mind boggling price of iPhones, they should come with an absolute minimum of 256gb of storage and 8gb RAM, and priced no more than $1500. Apple are setting insanely stupid prices for their phones because morons will pay for it. If people refused to be ripped off and pay the stupid prices Apple are asking, you would see how fast Apple would revise their 'pricing'.

      But but but… courage.

Hardware is a very small part of the value of the iPhone, it applies more to Android. I use both and with iOS, I never have to think about RAM usage. Storage is different, with higher res cameras and 4k videos, 64GB is way too low. But they want to sell iCloud so….

      • For perspective, at the moment I am using a Nexus 6P 64GB on Android 8.1 with 3GB RAM, and RAM isn't an issue either (and I'd be considered a power user, games, documents, browsing (with 100+ tabs open in Brave), songs, social media, lots of video and pictures, 100+ apps, etc). Not sure what experiences you've had with Android, but I haven't had RAM issues for a very very long time.

Although I agree that Apple want to sell iCloud and is the same strategy that Google employed by removing the unlimited cloud storage with the Pixel 4 which was a pretty relevant issue as to why the phone did not succeed, given its high price and lack of (and limited) onboard storage options.

  • For just a little bit more you can get them here and only need to stay on the Optus plans for 3 months

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/547592

    • Don't you only need to stay on this Voda plan for one day?

      • Ok, considering that the Optus ones are cheaper and you get 3 months of the plan too.

        • Works out pretty similar I guess?

          Optus - 1899(ProMax 64gb) + (3x119) - 600 (flybuys points) = 1656
          Voda - 1649(ProMax 64gb) + 35 (OneMonthVoda) + 10 (2 months sim swapping) - 80 (100% Shopback credit) = 1614

Might be less on Voda again if you cancel on first day and it's pro rata (can't find this easily). Obviously need to consider data needs etc. but purely to get the cheapest phone they're both good options if you're willing to jump through some hoops.

          • @Fancydancer: I didn’t know about the ShopBack. Still can’t bring myself to pay that much for an iPhone though. Always swore I’d get one next phone, but there’s always an Android that keeps me on the dark side.

          • @Fancydancer: If I just wanted the phone, then "10 (2 months sim swapping)" is not required, right? Just get a burner number?

I couldn't work out what the "80 (100% Shopback credit)" actually is from their website.

            • @quarrymaster: The Shopback might only be 40% as it's a month to month plan, so if you cancel straight away you might be up for the $35 for that month, but only get $14 cash back. It's hard to tell how they would pay the cash back.

              • @wfdTamar: Not sure I'd get anything for it, which is fine. With postpaid, you get 100% of the first month's plan cost (24 or 36 Month Plan with Handset) or 65% (12 Month Plan) but you need to stay on for three months.

That's my understanding. The info on Shopback's website is pretty bad. But I think the first month and staying on for three is correct from their online Chat.
