Optus 500GB $119 Plan for 3 Months Get 120,000 flybuys (Worth $600). Buy 5G Phone Double Data

150

This may be targeted to regional customers (though I can't see how they can tell unless it comes up when you enter your address).

Buy a mobile phone and get the 500Gb plan (stay on it for 90 days) and get 120,000 Flybuys points (worth $600). Some 5G phones get double data.

Some phones are discounted IF you stay on the plan the whole phone contract length (but these ones don't have the double data).

NOTE -
There are 5 offers mixed up in this:
Double data for buying some 5G phones.
Regional Offer - discount on some plans (ends 30 June).
Standard & Bonanza Flybuys points offer (ends 2 Aug).
Discount on phone cost for staying on plan full term.

Looks like you only have to be on the plan for 90 days to get the points, but if you cancel the plan you then have to pay off the Remainder of the phone in full. Quite a few phones of varying types and cost.

Other lower data plans available for less points. Also sim only plans. With 1000Gb you could dump your home internet (though people have been warning 4G speeds have dropped in their areas since Covid).

Or buy a 4G phone and get 500Gb, the Flybuys. Cheapest is the 4G Oppo Reno Z for $30 over 12 months (24 & 36 available too). So that's $1188 over the year for the phone and plan = $99 per month. Or $117 (after you factor in the $600 Flybuys) if you dump the phone plan after 90 days!

Or with the Apple iPhone Pro Max 512Gb (most expensive phone) it's $208.20 for 12 months (2498.40). Cost after 90 days of the plan, minus the points is $2255.40 (RRP is $2499). Thats the 4G plan though (best deal comes with a 5G phone).

Page doesn't work in Safari. Use Chrome (on a Mac).

For maximum benefits:
Click the main link at the top of this page, then click Mobile Phones tab on the Optus page that opens, then move sideways in the selection of phones using the arrow to get to a 5G phone, under the phone payment cost click 'Select device and proceed', then it should show the doubled data in the offer details.

Edited 7 July to remove gift card parts (as its ended).

  • Depending on how many in your household and what's their browsing habit, I'd say 500gb is still a risky proposition. And still very expensive exercise because after 3 months you're only $240 ahead, if you own an Android you will know that a flagship model will drop more than that during the same period.

    • There are quite a few phones (23) - the whole Apple range and lots of Androids. If you were planning to buy one anyway and could manage with that amount of data (I reckon a single or lower using couple could) it seems a pretty good option - if you can get Optus.

Hard to find a home internet plan (that's any good) for less than $50 per month.

  • The issue is you can only buy groceries with the $600

    • Everyone needs groceries (though I just read there's Covid in a Coles distribution centre!).

      • +1

From what I hear Melbourne needs more toilet papers. Anyway it can be a big commitment unless you're streaming or downloading/uploading a lot. I personally struggle to use 60GB

FYI if anyone from Victoria has run out, I can send some from QLD at cost + Freight + 5%. No cashrewards/shopback on this. And remember, QLD is still local!

In case anyone was unsure, the last part is a joke.

        • 60Gb on your mobile and home internet? I can get through 500Gb. If you have 4k streaming it's not hard (not sure of the Optus bandwidth where I am though).

          • @wfdTamar: Yeah, 60GB on mobile & internet specifically Telstra :)

  • Blimey, it's coming up with 1000Gb and a $200 gift card as well now! Ah, if you get a 5G phone.

However I can't see any way to actually purchase the deal! (change from Safari to Chrome on a Mac).

    Here goes….
    Get Oppo Reno Z = -$399
    Get $119 Plan (3months) = -$357
    Get 120k points = +$600
Cancel nbn and use the sim as Internet (3 months) = +$150
Net outcome = $6 for Oppo Reno Z.
Overheads = Depends on how quick you get the points.

    Not too bad.

    • isnt the Oppo Reno Z 4g? its showing as $360 for me plus $39 1 month plan. do i need to be log in as a customer? the cheapest 5 g i can see is Oppo
      Find X2 Lite 5G
      $20.80per month
Interest free device payments if you remain on any month-to-month SIM plan for 36 months. Min. cost $748.80 plus your chosen plan fees.. . . is this correct so if i cancel plan in 3 months time i dont have to pay out the rest of the plan just the cost of the phone? i think ill pass its not worth a credit hit, best buy a phone outright.

      • Aah you are right my friend. Deduct $39 from my calculations. The actual cost of the phone is $360.

  • +4

For those who are not after a phone, the sim only plans are also offering bonus flybuys.

    10GB - $39/mth - 9000 pts (net cost $72)
    60GB - $49/mth - 22500 pts (net cost $34.50)
    100GB - $59/mth - 30000 pts (net cost $27)
    120GB - $79/mth - 37500 pts (net cost $49.50)
    500GB - $119/mth - 60000 pts (net cost $57)

    • Good point (Got a mistake in the first one.)

    • I was going to say this too.

So if you buy a phone you’re really only getting 60k flybuys bonus.

      • +1

but if it’s a 5G phone you also get double the data and a $200 gift card.

        • correct. If it’s 5G.

    • Been looking at the 500gb plan as an option to replace my amaysim $40 sim plan as the bonus unlimited data is ending this month :(

Hopefully after 3 months something else will pop up. 500gb is the bare minimum I could get by on as Netflix and Stan chews up an insane amount of data. Used over 10gb to watch scarface the other night!!

      • Are you steaming in 4K? If so do you really need to?

I am not telling people what they can or cannot do here but just want to remind you all 500G or 1000G is a lot but not endless data. You will have to adjust usage behavior. If you can't do that (like streaming 4K or leave TV box on and play all day), you should stick to NBN.

        • No idea. How do you opt in or out of 4k?

          • +1

@harthagan: Pause a video and there is usually some sort of setting button on the right of the timeline bar. You can control the play back res there.

  • +2

Optus does NOT have 5G coverage everywhere. So likely that you are going to fall under 4G coverage.
I was using their 4G internet for my household internet, which did fair enough job before the lockdown however since March 2020, I had started experiencing the speed of 2Mbps or even less.
So consider this point as well if you are dumping your home internet.

  • wheres the link to this promo - cant find it?

There are 4 offers mixed up in this:
Double data & $200 card for buying a 5G phone Offer ends 6 July).
Regional Offer - discount on some plans (ends 30 June).
Standard & Bonanza Flybuys points offer (ends 2 Aug).

  • I can’t see the $200 gift card for a 5G phone too, it only say $100 gift card. I'm using windows 10 with chrome browser.

  • Is say Sorry you are not eligible for this offer. You can check out other great deals here: https://www.optus.com.au/flybuys

    • +1

You need to be a new Optus customer or going on a fresh contract I think, or could have been once you put your address in (if it's targeted to regional buyers).

  • So let's say I take up an iPhone SE

    Handset cost: $749
    3 months $119: $357
Flybuys points: -$600 (in Coles Group money, though)

Then cancelling after 3 months then I get to keep the phone at a total cost of $596 (including 3 months of service at 500GB)?

    • Math checks out, just factor into account that $600 of flybuys points isn't really worth as much as $600 cash.

      • Great, thanks! Yeah, there are plenty enough ways to redeem Flybuys points (sadly, Velocity transfer no more, but Coles, Target, KMart, Officeworks, First Choice, Liquorland, etc.) so not that concerned.

    • +2

      Isn't that $749 + 357 = $1106 - $600 = $506 for the phone (and 3 months of plan)?

      • Gotta stop doing Math in my head! 😁

        • +1

Gotta stop watching US tv - mathS! :-)

      • You may need to pay for remaining 36 months! That's a lot.
Say 4 months monthly fee + 32 months headset fee.

        • You pay the phone cost (over either 1, 2 or 3 years). In that case it’s $749 for iPhone SE. The only other commitment is 3 months plan cost (that’s the $357 in the example).

  • Ignore.

  • +2

Why can’t companies just give plain and simply discount? Using indirect bonus to suck customer into your door step is just dirty and dishonest in my opinion.

Lets start with the FIND x2 pro. Really don’t know why someone would want this phone but that is a separate argument. For those who really wants it, the breakdown actually goes like this:

163.4 for 3 months to score the bonus points that is $490.2

Then you pay out the phone: $1485.2

At this point you got the fly buy bonus and egift card $800

You can also suspend your internet for three months since you have 1000G data for that three months. Not everyone can do that but lets assume you can. You save another $180

At the end of the day, you will find that you have pay $975.4 for a FIND x2 pro. This adds to my point; You need to go through all this trouble to get an “OPPO” that cost almost 1K……LOL On the record this phone goes around for $1300, then again ask yourself if you will pay 1.3K for an “OPPO”?

Lets then grill down to Optus and whether they are actually offer a deal here. I did find there are some deals base on the above assumptions. Basically all the sub $20/moth option. After all the trouble, you are scoring a half price handset. iPhone 7 128, iPhone SE 128, FIND X2 Lite, RENO Z, Huawei P30 are the ones that is worth mentioning. Note only the FIND X2 Lite have double data bonus. Still 500G is enough for most people to suspend their NBN for 3 months if situation allows. Price in the $180 you save from suspending NBN in to the discount you get result like $189 iPhone 7 128G, $126.36 Huawei P30, $225.8 FIND x2 Lite. The most interesting is the Reno Z. Pricing in the save on NBN then you are actually making money from this deal, $63 exactly. You should have no problem selling it brand new on ebay or gumtree for $300.

I still hope Optus can ditch all these Harvey voucher and Flybuy points bullshit and give user plain and simply discount. $70 200G data sim, $18.95 3Gb call plan, $100 flagship with 200G plan just to name a few.

    • Can you summarise?

    • I think your calculation is wrong.

    • +2

Why can’t companies just give plain and simply discount? Using indirect bonus to suck customer into your door step is just dirty and dishonest in my opinion.

Yeah, that's all very well and good but that's not how the world works.

The Flybuys thing is probably because Coles wants more people to sign up to Flybuys so that they can collect customer data, so it pays Optus a cut (or sells them Flybuys points on the cheap) in the hope that combining their efforts, they both get more customers (and data).

As for JB and Harvey Norman, you're even further off. Those guys sell hardware, but the devices are useless without plans, so they offer their sweeteners (and probably paid for in part out of the commission they receive for reselling a carrier plan, or just simply loss-leading), for the opportunity to upsell accessories, etc. over the lifetime of that device.

Sure, it'd be nice just to roll every single benefit into a single, final price, provided by a single vendor. But nobody's ever going to be able to wear the entire cost of providing that all on their lonesome, so what you're asking is never, ever going to happen. It's impossible.

Just be grateful that we even get these pre-stacked deals, instead of having to manually cobble them together.

  • After all the trouble, you are scoring a half price handset. iPhone 7 128, iPhone SE 128, FIND X2 Lite, RENO Z, Huawei P30 are the ones that is worth mentioning

Can you please elaborate? I cant work out the maths to end up with half price handset.

  • OK for those who asked, this is the simple version.

first number is the one you pay for three months , second the balance of the phone, third the bonus in dollar and last number is how much you end up paying. Like I said, if your situation allow you to suspend you NBN for 3 months, then you take another $180 off.

    iphone 7 128G 408 561 -600 369
    iphone SE 128G 426.6 765.6 -600 592.2
    FIND X2 lite 419.4 686.4 -700 405.8
    RENO Z 387 330 -600 117

    • iPhone SE 128 over 12 months is 12 x $69.06 = $828.72
      90 days of $119 plan = $357
      $828.72+
      $357=
$1185.72 (total out of pocket cost) -
      $600 (120,000 Flybuys points value)=
$585.72 - the total end cost of the iPhone 128

That’s how you do a simple calculation and write it so people can understand it - and get it correct (I hope)!

      • Glad for you to type all that for me, I don't have the time.

My number was using the 36 months option and they cost does change a bit on Optus website but its correct.

        • It’s the same for any amount of years for me - $828.72 says in the smaller print when you change duration.

If you spent more time getting one correct and explained it properly it would’ve been quicker. Do one and people can work out the others themselves, but if you get it wrong it doesn’t help your rant at all.

Your iPhone SE and Oppo Find X2 results are wrong.

          • @wfdTamar: To get you started, try it with the Pixel 4 pricing, see how it changes. When you are done. Feel free to type up your version of my numbers so everyone can UNDERSTAND it.

So people WHO KNOWS the Optus system will always go on the 36 months term. When you cancel, you pay what ever handset payment left on a 36 months term X the months left on your payment plan.

            • @syswong: Ok, NOW you have picked a phone that does change total end cost depending which term you pick. It seems some change, some don't.

However none of the ones you used as examples did, in particular the iPhone SE.

              • @wfdTamar: Ok feel free to test the site for us.

BTW Find X2 lite is showing 20.18+119 with a $100 bouns ecard. So tell me I am worng!!

You always go by the number showing on the cart as that is what printed on your contract.

I hate to say this but its moronic people and comments like yours that keeps many people from contributing to this place. People like you who like to stir up meaning less argument…..

                • @syswong: Ok, you're worng, and wrong! It's $20.80, but you are correct it's only a $100 gift card. Hooray, you found one mistake I made.

Calling people morons still doesn't mean you're correct.

Frankly, I am a bit confused about low number of upvotes here.

I can see another deal for iPhone SE 2020 on the front page $899 for 256Gb: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/548667 with significantly more upvotes.

Here you can get the same phone for $755 ($998.64 less net value of flybuys $243). You can also stretch repayments over 3 years. On top of that you get 3 x 500Gb of data. Yes, flybuys may not appeal to everyone but still this deal seems better.

    • +1

Yeah, I think people want instant gratification. Because this deal requires some math, and takes a number of months to resolve, people just put it into the too hard basket.

    • +1

Base on calculation of a 100G plan over 24 months with iphone SE 2020 256gb

assuming you will go with COL which is $28/month if you buy the phone outright, or you switch to COL after you score the 120K points. The Optus / Flybuy deal came out $227 better over 24 months.

    • Stretch over 3 years? How to do that if we cancel after 3 months? And if the plan is discounted, then will we have to pay back the discounts if we cancel after 3 months? (example Huawei P30 has different pricing)

      • +1

There are two parts in play here.

You need to stay for 3 months to get the bonus Point for what ever plan you choose.

You can do what ever you want after the points is in your account as the plan is month by month. You will have to pay out the rest 33 months of handset repayment.

So make sure you are comfortabke with paying out the balance of phone after three months.

        • Example - Huawei P30 has $549.36 off RRP $1,098.72 for 24 month and 36 month plan. However no discount on 12 month plan. So if take 36 month plan (for 15.26 per month due to 549.36 discount) and subsequently cancel after 3 months (once i receive the flybuys points), do I need to pay 15.26 x 33 months remaining or also the 549.36 discount which I had received?

          • @bajirao: Wrong. You won’t get the device discount without an attached plan. On the 36 month plan it says: Includes a $15.26 monthly device discount.

            • @TomGum: My question was what happens after you cancel your plan and still have 33 months left - will we be asked to fork 15.26x33 (or 15.26x36) or just the monthly handset price x remaining 33 months. @syswong clarified below that we only pay the monthly handset price x 33 months thereby saving 549.36 for this particular handset.

          • -1

@bajirao: This is another handset like pixel 4 that change in price if you take 12 months plan.

When you sign up for 36 months plan and quit after 3 months, you will pay your monthly payment x 33 months.

That is also why I argue with wfdTamar that those who plan to take up this offer should always take up the 24 or 36 months plan and if you want to end your contract after 3 months, you will only pay the 21 / 33 months of discounted payment.

            • @syswong: Got it. Thanks for the clarification. Good to know that we won't be asked to fork the $549.36 discount in case we cancel the plan after 3 months.

              • @bajirao: Just realise you are talking about P30. I really wouldnt advise going for it. I only have it because it was free with JB deal last year may in JB. Iphone and Samsung still the way to go.

              • @bajirao: Wrong again. Look at the minimum total cost.

                • +1

@TomGum: Ok so we have 2 contradicting views!

  • Is this offer only available to selected post codes?

  • My big question is how do you ensure you only pay 3 months of network charges when your flybuys points are going to take at a very minimum 90 days to appear?

They will charge you a month up front. I'm assuming if you cancel the day of or slightly after your 4th payment, they're unlikely to credit you for the unused remainder of the month if you, for example, cancel after 91 days (although please correct me if I'm wrong)

    • +3

It’s pro rata. So you will get credit back for the remainder of unused days.

      • Thanks for the reply, that's great news. And here was me assuming the worst from a Telco.

Speaking of which, anyone know if an iPhone comes network locked or with Optus bloatware?

  • Huawei P30 Pro
    Save $590.40 off RRP $1,598.40

Includes a $16.40 monthly device discount.Interest free device payments if you remain on any month-to-month SIM plan for 36
Min. cost $1,582.00 plus your chosen plan fees.

    36 x $28 = $1008

Same with the pixel 4XL total min cost $1,428.48/$1,418.07/$1,421.54

    Something doesn't add up there….

    • Oh right I hadn't noticed that. That seems only for some phones (a perk for staying on the plan), but no gift card or double data.

So you can get the phone for $1008 IF you stay on the plan for 3 years. I'd go for the 2 year payoff so you're not committed so long.

      • Gift card only applies to the Find X2/Lite
        Double data 5G phones only

Interesting part is the total minimum cost does not reflect the promoted saving off RRP and excludes any plan fees. Not familiar with optus handset credits.. could it be the rebate amount is included in the total min cost?

        ie. Huawei P30 Pro Min. cost $1,582.00/36 = $44p/m not $28pm.

        Thought this sounded familiar

  • +1

Another thing I’ve noticed with this - if you cancel the plan or move to an ineligible plan (not sure what that is. Might just be one not mentioned on that deal page) you have to then pay off the balance of the phone cost in full. In other words it looks like you can’t keep paying the phone in interest free instalments.

    • I think all those plans available on the website are eligible plans. They are Optus' sim only plans anyway.

  • Anyone done the calcs for iPhone 11 128GB?

    • Pay $1278.72 for the phone, $357 for the plan. Get $600 of Flybuys points. Phone ends up costing $1035.72. Apple RRP is $1279. That's $243.28 off.

      • Thank you. I can get it for $1168 price beat at officeworks so will weigh it up.

        • Don't forget to include the 3 months of service in your considerations…

          • @zzyss: Ah yep thanks. Although that's only $30 worth for me as I don't use much data.

            • +2

@Hazza: Side discussion of an old topic….

I am surprise how many people say they dont need that much data. As I pointed out above if your situation allow you to suspend your NBN, the 500G/1000G data should be sufficient enough for you to go though three months without NBN. That is min $60 a month save.

Most people dont use that much data because they use hotspots at home and work. With all you available data follow where ever you go is something totally different. May be there are people that really use that much data that they cant ditch NBN…..

I consider me and my wife fairly heavy user. Between us can do average 5-10g a day We have a 200G optus plan and 100G telstra with POM, never see the need od going back to fix line, and I swear my wife will kill me if I put her back to 5Gb small plans and tell her to use fix line again.

You have to experience the convinence to realise how good it is. Thats just my 2 cent!

              • @syswong: Yeah I read the hack of using it as your home internet connection for three months, valid point. But I can't ditch NBN for several reasons. Between our family of 4, we use around 1GB of mobile data each per month from our phones as the rest of the time we are on wifi either at home or work/school. For $40 a month + $60 unlimited NBN we have all the convenience and data we ever need. But for others I see how this could save them $180 of NBN charges.

                • @Hazza: Just to let anyone reading know - you will get a message that you can't use the Optus One plan in a modem.

I tried and it still works but at slower speeds.

If you hotspot with your phone, shouldn't get any errors on the other hand.

                  • @ballistykx: Ah I was going to ask what modem people are using to share their mobile data to all the devices at their home (both wired and wireless), as I would have to buy one if I wanted to use that hack (mobile phone wifi AP wouldn't have the range). Do you know what speed it limits it too?

                    • @Hazza: You dont need a specific router, a $70 wifi extender on the AC1200 Spec should get the job done. At least that is what I did at my parents place with a phone as hotpot.

Didnt work out for them because they want to have their Chinese tv box on all day… how bloody hard is to switch on and off the box!! So a warming to those who is using the mobile plan to replace NBN, it is not UNLIMITED so you need to adjust your usage habit.

                    • @Hazza: I was getting less than 10Mbps! I have another sim with 5G access and getting 300Mbps+ on that using a Nokia 5G FastMile that I bought second hand.

                      • @ballistykx: OUCH!! Hope you get a good price as that piece of kit is bloody expensive…

Talking about 5G speed. I went in to Optus George Street and ask to try the 5G connection on a 5G phone. They say no phone has live sim for customer to play with… RIDICULOUS!!

                        • @syswong: I got a VERY good price for the modem, and I'm extremely happy with my 5G connection now with 1tb of it!
Had to buy everything step by step as Optus wouldn't give me a 5G sim or modem because I'm just off the border of their 5G network but, considering how a good 250Mbps NBN connection costs $129, this is comparable in costs for faster speeds than NBN.

                  • @ballistykx: What modem are you using?

                    • @TomGum: I'm using a Nokia 5G FastMile that I bought second hand.

  • Does any one apply the gift card from Oppo? I did, uploaded proof of purchase which is the contract from Optus. After that I realised that all my personal information on the page, my birthday, address, email and account number. Oh if one day my mobile number or account got hacked, it must be them……..

    • I got mine today.

      • How many days for processing?

        • About a week and a half.

    • Hum….. I do think twice (may be even three times) when I buy China branded equipment these days let alone giving them so much detail for a lousy $200 cash back. I did this once last year with buying a Huawei P30 with the JB deal and claim the $200 mother's day gift card. I would definitely not do that today.

      • Samsung did same things in last 3 years, even asked more information.

        • -1

Haha the same old on going discussion about CCP having access to our data is the same as other Country / Business….

All business and government are dirty in a macro sense. Not that the USA, Korea or even Australia is better!! I simply decided to take the side against China Communist Part (CCP) since June last year. No need to be sensible and rational here. I hate CCP I wish the party burn and go to hell, that's just me. END OF (MY) DISCUSSION.

    • What gift card is this?

      • $200 gift card from Oppo when buy Oppo find x2 pro from Optus until 6th July.

        • Oh yes that phone. How long did it take for the phone to arrive?
