  • compared the specification of this 970 evo+ with my 960evo. didnt know it would be so much faster than my old 960! paid over $340 two years ago…

    • +2

just compared my 960 to 970evo plus (both 500gb):

970 on left, 960 on right:

      • +1

        960 has faster 4K speeds

        • Lmao Samsung SSDs are getting worse!

    • +5

doubt you will see much difference

  • *NVMe

    • +1

      nvmE

      • +8

        Nevermind E

  • +2

Wow did I buy at the wrong time. I got it bricks and mortar for $339 in the sales last month. Could have saved almost $50 taking delivery into account.

    • It sucks aye, but you're not alone. It happens to most of us

    • +1

Some credit cards have purchase protection. Have a look if you paid with one.

  • just FYI cashback is not working for the 500Gb models. Maybe someone who has tried doing a cashback on the 1TB can comment if its working for them.

    • +1

I got the error "invalid serial number/IMEI" when trying to claim the cashback (for the 1TB model). Emailed their promotions team and they fixed it in about a week.

      • +1

        When did you email them?

I still haven't received cashback from Feb this year.
Phone lines are no longer working due to COVID.
I sent them 5 emails during the last few months but haven't got any reply.
The last email I got from them in Feb was saying "Cashback approved, wait 1 month for the transfer".
Nothing happened since then - no transfer, no reply to any of my emails.

        I need another SSD.
I doubted Samsung cashback is going to work for me.
So I bought WD Black last week.

      • Same.

      • +1

You have to use the serial number from the SSD, not from the sticker on the box because it doesn't have the last character on the box for security purposes. Cheers

        • I’m also getting Invalid serial error, I am using the one from the SSD, with the last character.

  • As ppl mentioned, for normal tasks and gaming, stick to normal ssd, I got this and evo860 and there is no difference in game performance, even booting up my comp there is no difference

    • +7

The major difference for me is that I don't need 2 cables to connect the NVMe as compared to the SSD (one for power and one for SATA).

      • -3

M.2 SATA??? Also I like the look of the 2.5" SSD.

        • The 860 EVO 1TB

      • +3

The major difference for me is that I don't need 2 cables to connect the NVMe as compared to the SSD (one for power and one for SATA).

It's hard to justify that this is worth $100 more. The 860 EVO 1TB is around $140 and the the 970 EVO Plus 1TB is $240.

FWIW, I think the 970 EVO Plus is a fantastic drive if you need the speed, but for the overwhelming majority of users who are just using it as an OS, game or storage drive, I'd suggest they save the $100. Put it towards a better CPU or GPU or more RAM.

      • Just want to point out that your terminology is wrong. NVMe and M.2 are distinctly different things. I believe what you're referring to is the M.2 form-factor (the chips you can plug directly into the motherboard without need of additional cables).

NVMe is an interface specification which can be implemented on an M.2 device, but also others (such as U.2 or U.3).

The important thing to note is that there are many M.2 SSDs that plug directly into the motherboard which still use the SATA specification and offer no performance improvement over the more traditional 2.5" form factor.

Most M.2 SSDs on the market are in fact SATA and not NVMe - and all of the cheaper ones are.

    • I had to go to m.2 NVME because I ran out of drive bays in my case. M.2 helps significantly with the cable clutter too.

      • -2

It's SSD, it doesn't really need a drive bay.

  • Pretty decent price, I got that Crucial p1 m.2 from Amazon, $135..

My boot time still 18.5s, I thought would be faster but could be a ryzen thing.

    • NVMe won't change boot times in seconds, rather milliseconds at best. My Ryzen 5 3500X on B350 according to task manager had a BIOS time of 16.5s.

      • Depends what you're doing, SATA is ~550MB/Sec where NVMe is around 3gig+/sec. Boot wont change as the PC has other tasks to perform while booting so its not as I/O bound as it would be with a mechanical disk. Anyone who does lots of video editing would love one (or a couple) of these.

Other consideration is device, some only have a M.2 slot (ultrabooks etc) so SATA isnt even an option.

        • Yeah it's definitely wanted for that, but even video editing I think a SATA SSD would scrub through a timeline just fine unless editing high bitrate 4K.

    • How often you reboot/shutdown?

      • Hmm just when I use The PC, Maybe once a day or two at most..
Haven't played with any fast or secure Boots.. 3700x..
Changing the ram to 3200 helped intially stuck on 2200 or something and was only a second faster than my 9y old i5 2500+

        • I have work lappie HP 14u Zbook i7-8550u/32GB(ssd) 6.0s bios. old desktop i5-4690/16GB(840ssd) 13.0. new desktop 3300x/16GB(970evo+nvme) 14.2. old Dell XPS13 i7-5500u/8GB(ssd) 5.7s

        • Yeah becasue AMD doesn't change sockets every 2 years, they need more microcodes in the BIOS therefore increasing post times. I really wish you could select what you actually want in the BIOS to cut down on post times.

    • I think you need to reinstall windows, SATA ssd takes less than 10 sec 6 years ago.

      • Nah, New build with m.2 SSD

        • lol, I'm just trying to help you figure out the problem you have.18.5s seems unreasonable.

          • @yfxsmike: That's what I was thinking for new tech, Seems like fairly common according to the comments above. Haven't downloaded or installed MSI fast boot, was looking into it, not that phased with the arsenal gaming splash screen but turned it off, used to be a dragon apparently.

Suppose just make a coffee and come back, a secure boot still better I gather

  • Bought from these guys recently had free delv. Doesn't seem to be the case now.

  • +1

I just bought a 1tb T7 Touch for the same price (sans cashback)… should I return it and just buy this and whack it in an enclosure instead? This seems like 3x faster.

    • +1

I was going to get the 1TB T7 touch at the end of June from the Bing Lee $299 special. After reading the disconnection/stalling issues of the T7 from others, I backed out.

A 1TB 970 Evo Plus + enclosure is a better choice if you ask me but it won’t be exactly cheaper as you will need a good enclosure to unleash its potential speed and to dissipate heat or it may fry the drive.

      • I think you can put a custom heatsink over the SSD? Maybe that will help cool things down

        • +1

Definitely can do but that’s another thing to fiddle with and another (small) added cost.

        • +1

There is not much space in the enclosure, but you can use 0.5mm thermal tape over the stick to get it in contact with the enclosure. It helped drop my PM961 temps from 50°C to 40°C during sustained writing. It would be much hotter if running at full NVME speeds on the motherboard or adapter card though.

  • +1

Can someone explain to me the real advantages of choosing this over another cheaper 1TB Nvme?? This costs about $100 more than the other 1TB Nvme's on Ozbargain, and the speed difference really should be present since both are already so fast and can transfer gigabytes within seconds

    • +1

The vast majority of users won't even notice any significant differences in real world performance between NVME and SATA right now.

    • +1

Perceived Reliability and it is the second fastest PCI-3 Nvme drive.

Apart from that.. NOT worth the extra money in real world usage and no one should ever use any storage drive/device without backing up important files no matter how good the reliability is… Everything fails at some point.

      • The speed wouldn't really matter due to the major speeds which all Nvme's bring to the table, but the reliability is questionable, considering the ~$160 Nvme's from brands such as WD which prove to be quite reliable.

I'm thinking of replacing my 240GB Nvme on my X1 Carbon with a 1TB, and so far, the cheaper options just seem to be better…

On another note, would you guys recommend a 2TB over the 1TB?? This device is my main device, and I would really like to save a bunch of games on the drive at the same time, without needing to delete them and then reinstall when I'm "actually going to play them" :)

    • Watch out for QLC vs TLC and some of the cheaper ones don't have onboard DRAM, which hurts sustained writing speeds over 20-30 GB sin size.

    • Which deal are u talking about?

  • +2

Best thing I can say to recommend this drive is that it got rid of the stuttering and pop in in Path of Exile. Worth it.

  • Any deals on the 2TB model? Would think the higher end has better margins and little more room for discount…

    • +1

$599 is the cheapest I could find from the same shop for this post (onlinecomputer.com.au), but they are sold out. I would grab one at that price if it was still available.

      • It appears it allows you to add it to your cart, so maybe they're still taking orders but not delivering until more stock arrives?

        • Not sure when they will have more stock though and what if stock won’t arrive after the Samsung cashback deadline?

  • +1

A question to the experts: I have 256 GB NVMe currently installed in my laptop (came default with the T480s). Can I just change it to the 1 TB one? Will I need to do anything additional to deal with the (supposedly increased) heat?

    • +1

What's the current temp with the 256GB? Check with HWINFO while writing a 50GB file. If it isn't high (<70C) then it may be fine for an upgrade.

If it goes over 75C it may not be a wise upgrade, as it'll be too close to critical temp (85C).

  • +3

    Great find OP! BARGAIN!!

This is an awesome deal. PLEASE note to new buyers that the new Samsung 980 Pro will be released in around a months time which has almost under double the read and write of this NVME. Price will of course be higher but the ADATA XPG SAGE which is the more affordable option will be coming out as well. (Expected to have incredible specs at a more affordable price.)

In saying that, what we will see in real world usage may not be marginal at all. But in our own best interests if you have a motherboard with a PCIe 4.0 slot such as most x570 boards, Definately do hold out and spend that little extra on something that may be forever future-proof (No such thing), especially with 8k technology lurking around the corner.
Why do we need it? TBH, nothing more then bragging rights unless you're a video editor.

Again, If you're on a tight budget, then you wont beat this deal!

    • +1

Thanks mate. Good info. The 980 Pro looks so overkill lol. I went with this deal anyway, save the extra money to spend on other components :)

    • Personally, if I was in the market for 1TB, I would wait for the 980 Pro but there seems to be still a long wait for the 2TB TLC version.

  • Do these NVMe drives need heatsinks?

I ask as I've seen some of the newer motherboards coming with haetsinks for NVMe drives.

    • +1

Heat affects performance, similar to CPU and GPU.
When writing for prolong period, such as video editing, then heat would throttle performance. But for general use it shouldn't be a concern

FWIW, I removed the copper heatsink sticker, attached a small heat sink fin with thermal paste AND 40mm fan on my NVMe SSD to keep temps below 60C. I have a small case (SFF enthusiast) and temps are not great even under normal use.

  • Honestly these guys are the worst IT company I have ever dealt with.

Might as well grey import it.

    • Never tried them. Are they as bad as CPL?

      • I've never had any negative experiences with them. They have physical stores here in Sydney as well. Can't be that bad if they're partnered with Samsung for the cashback.

        • How do you usually make the payment? I paid 3 business days ago but no reply until now. I started to worry they're gonna deny my payment.

          • @DarthKhaso: I make my payments through PayPal since there is no extra charge, plus you get extra protection if anything goes wrong.

    • Would you like to share your experience with us as to why you made that statement? :)

    • They can’t be worse than Scorptec.

      • What's wrong with Scorptec? I found their order system quite fast and service reasonable in store

    • I ordered one yesterday at 10:40am, it arrived today at 1:52pm. Sent from Sydney to Melbourne. Good communication with invoice and tracking details.

  • I paid more for a Sabrant Rocket 2TB, did I get ripped off?

    • I'd love a 2TB Sabrent Rocket over this 1TB 970 Evo Plus.

  • lol, I bought this from the same exact store yesterday for $296. Bummer. Give me my $11 please.

  • DON'T BUY ONLINE!!

I don't know about their retail store but their service of online store sucks. I have placed an order and paid via bank account transfer. I didn't receive any confirmation after 3 business days lol. I tried to call them and send email, no one replied.

    • Was it a big purchase? Should have used PayPal for buyers protection.
Maybe wait another few business days more and see what happens?

    • I made my purchase yesterday at the same time I posted this and it was also dispatched very soon after my order was placed (via Fastway). PayPal order
