Toilet Paper Shortages Soon?

Was at Costco Casula in the arvo and it seems like every second person had toilet paper in their carts. I'm wondering if the news about shortages in Melbourne has forced people to start loading up again? Thoughts?

No shortage of TP, just a shortage of common sense.

    • +1

Yeah unfortunately the general public lack that…

      • +1

You might even say… it's not very common

  • +4

I hear there's going to be a shortage of the ASX stocks I hold, so people stick their money into them and inflate the price protect their family's health.

    • -1

Vic will be annexed into the Chinese Empire first

  • I think it will happen people will start to panic buy again if the second wave start to hit more harder and more people get sick

  • What a lot of crap

  • +1

I think it’s going to be different this time around, as it’s localised . Supermarkets will just reallocate stocks from other states to Victoria, even if panic buying picks up. Secondly, there is no stay home order yet .

    • +1

Would be nice if they'd consider restocking regional areas instead of just focusing on the highest population areas, shelves are still bare here from April.

    • +3

Give it a few more days. It could easily spread to the rest of Australia.

      • +2

Well there you go. It only took 2 days and purchasing limits now apply to all of Australia.

  • +3

my rolls last me months, do people use a roll per bathroom visit?

    • people 5h!tting themselves about dying!

    • Some people unroll a few times to create four or five layers for wiping, then probably repeat once more for the second series of wipes.

    • For a bit of a laugh I started just leaving the used empty cardboard rolls on the top of the toilet when the first shortages started occurring at the start of March, just to track how much I go through and see how much this whole shortage thing affected me.

Today, there are four rolls there.

  • Imagine living in Victoria 😂

    • +4
      • Keep telling yourself that 😉

    • That's what Queenslanders call day dreaming.

How could people be stupid twice.

    • +3

      Stupidity is infectious

      • +2

        Idiocracy

        • I too have seen that Documentary.

    • Stupid people don't learn

    • Stupidity just went on sale for EOFY

  • +1

Or they have toilet paper for their meal?

  • +1

nekminnit - Bunnings Warehouse! Bum gun runs are just the beginning…

  • +10

It's hard to be rational about this, originally my wife and I laughed at the idiots from our area stockpiling toilet paper then a month later it was almost impossible to get your hands on a packet.

I'm not sure this panic buying will affect people here in Adelaide but I'm going to make sure I've got enough to last me for a month or two and if everyone thinks the same way we're going to have another shortage and this doesn't include the morons that stockpile a year's worth.

    • +2

It was pretty difficult to find TP last time. It doesn't hurt getting a few extra rolls this time around.

      • +7

It doesn't hurt getting a few extra rolls this time around.

And thus, every single person in Australia had the same brilliant idea.

        That's why shortages happen!

        • -3

If you're happy to be one of the people who potentially misses out and can't get some when you need it - which did happen to some people last time especially older or other more vulnerable people - then cool; that's probably the ethical thing to do. But people who right now might be almost out and see this stuff and go buy one now are not being stupid or irrational, as lots of people want to claim. Sure it contributes to the overall problem for everyone, but it's not irrational on an individual level to secure something you're going to want or need in advance of not being able to get it shortly, which may well happen. It's basically a Game Theoretical problem. Yes the ideal solution is for everyone to behave fairly and rationally, but if I know they won't and I can't control their actions, only my own, then it makes sense to throw in the towel and get some. If you needa take a shit and can't wipe cos you couldn't get any, it doesn't really matter whether everyone else bought it all for a good or fair or rational reason or not, does it? heh

        • I agree, but I surely don't want to be driving around the city looking for TP, and then paying $1-2 a roll. That's what some of my mates did last time.
I always buy TP in bulk from Costco, so I wasn't affected last time.

    • One of the reasons Adelaide couldn't get stock last time, is because the majority was redirected to Melbourne and Sydney. Even now, many of the supermarkets I visit feel like they're still catching up. Could easily still impact us.

    • +1

hopefully we are now in a situation where the majority of the idiots from last time still have months of supply in their cupboards. They seemed completely incapable of understanding that supply would not be affected as it is locally made though so who knows perhaps they will try and fill up the rest of their garage space. We took steps last month just to a have a box of a few essentials so we would not be screwed over by the idiots if the whole thing repeats.

  • My local Woolies has no toilet paper any more. All cleaned out yesterday.

  • So sick of this shit (excuse the pun). It's really ridiculous especially when you see some elderly people who can barely walk distressed that they can't get their necessities.

  • Again, wasn't a problem until the news showed empty shelves… Doesn't matter if they are empty now or photos from 3 months ago,it will start panic buying again. They should be banned from sowing fear into people's minds.

    • LOL. Okay, who will decide that? Will they also ban any religions that discuss the devil or hell or damnation? Will they ban propaganda about other countries that our government wants to invade or pressure economically? Will they ban reports about crime and terrorism? How about scary news like pandemic and death figures? Can we also ban weather reports about storms? I hope no one dares report about the stock market dropping in value.

It's a grand conspiracy by the major shopping centers to clear excess stock.

Toilet paper is in excess and we are being played.

  • people think they can continue to hawk off toilet rolls for excessive amounts.

    • ppl sold rolls for 1-2 dollars each last time.

  • Amazon is officially out of stock of quilton toilet paper. Hopefully, it doesn't take as long as last time to restock.

    • They have the 45 pack in stock.

    • No they are not. They still have stocks

      • Must've come back in stock since I posted my comment

  • -1

I think that hoarders cannot live in society and must die, and threads like this should be banned. 😊

  • Oh a Melbourne thread oops, gone…

  • -7

    Blame black lives matter protesters

    • -1

Why? There hasn't been many cases associated with the protest. Also do you understand that people would rather risk covid then live in a world of inequality? keep licking Uncle Murdoch's boots though.

      • -1

Because the Melbournites went FU if they can protest we can do what we want, hence the problem now started since. Anyway all lives matter. The guy was a career criminal, didnt see any protests for the Aussie girl killed by a Black copper in US?

        • Mmm, apart that the BLM protest was on 6 June; there is a cluster of 19 that emanated from a family / religious gathering on 23/24 May.
There is another family cluster of 10.
          And another of 5.

Seems to be more related to people ignoring the maximum 5 guest restrictions.

        • +2

Of course all lives matters, thats never up for question. What people are protesting is to end systemic racism against certain ethnic groups. People like you are why these issues never progress, you've got what's yours and couldn't care less about anyone else unless it personally affects you. The toilet paper hoarding is just a symptom of this mindset.

          • -2

@Reddich24: The toilet paper hoarders are mostly ethnic lol.

      • -1

I don't think you understand the definition of inequality.

        • Sure mate, please enlighten me what qualifies as inequality.

          • +1

@Reddich24: I suppose it's inequality when there are jobs made available just for certain people, when certain people get cheaper education, when they also get a certain percentage of university places (disproportionate to the population) allocated to them. Etc

            • @brendanm: Thank you for reaffirming my point. You see these opportunities afforded and you ask where's yours, why do they get a leg up? Have you thought to consider that these policies are trying to bridge the dividing poverty gap between the Aboriginal people and the rest of society? Subsidising education is one way of accomplishing this but there are still low numbers of Aboriginal people found at a tertiary level. Have you ever managed to question if schools in Aboriginal communities are underfunded? There are also a disproportionate amount of Aboriginal people on welfare as well, have you considered that removing barriers of discrimination may be beneficial to the community as a whole? Also lower socioeconomic people have education subsidised as well. Regardless of the benefits Abororiginal people receive, are you saying they should just suck up the injustices doled out to them?

              • @Reddich24: Nope, I'm actually not asking for anything. I'm pointing out that we already have things in place that give advantages to Aborigines.

You don't want equality of opportunity, you want equality of outcome. That is down to the individual, unless you want to bring down those who are doing well to make others feel better?

            • @brendanm: Please read this on the difference between equity and equality. For some people the gap is so large that they do need an extra hand up just to reach a similar level to the majority of the population.

              https://edtrust.org/the-equity-line/equity-and-equality-are-…

              • +2

@Jules855: I understand what the difference between equality and equity is. Equity is taking things away from some people, to give to others. Equality means everyone gets a fair go.

The problem with your statement is that no one gets a hand up, they instead get a "hand out*. Which is a disincentive to better themselves.

        • sorry negged you by mistake

  • I think it just shows how stupid society has become…twice.

  • It's the social media hype at work again.
There's no reason for it, but people start talking about it and the hoard begins.

It only takes a small handful of outlying buyers which the company's stocking algorithm doesn't account for to cause the initial shortage. Then people take photos and make posts on websites like this and people think, okay I better get just one more than I need and it snowballs

    • Nope , true reason is there is so little shelf space devote to a huge cubic weight package that all you need is a group of people to buy a couple packs and the shelf's are empty .

  • This is why we need Covid …

    • +2

sadly covid doesn't seem to be targeting idiots. We need a PIT lol

  • Already no toilet paper that Quilton 45 at $18 subscribed a bargain again . 5 Limit won't be there for long . Been to 6 stores chasing Woolies cards .
Mid next week there will be no rice , long life milk etc . I'm out of long life and buying again .

  • +1

This is what TRUMP means when he says “fake news” :)

    • Self fulfulling prophecy and thus fake news became just news…

And remember the panic buying from earlier in the pandemic? Well there's been a repeat of that too in those local government areas, with toilet paper being stripped from supermarket shelves amid fears of localised lockdowns.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8453893/Coles-Woolw…

Coles and Woolworths have reintroduced shopping limits on products in Victoria due to a spike in panic buying.

    • If same rate of cases in Vic daily persists the # ing Toilet paper hoarders are back in biz again .
      They could get out .

  • Too late, the morons have already struck again, shelves empty.

  • 33 more cases just announced stock up !

    • Probably people that have been out hoarding.

  • The Northern Territory recorded a total of 30 cases throughout this entire "pandemic" with over 12,000 tests conducted. Things are literally as they were pre-COVID.. Nightclubs at full capacity, same with gyms and cinemas open.. Can't help but wonder if the stupidity boils down to the residents in VIC..

    • Any number of factors I imagine, but stupidity would be one.
Others could be climate, population density, and certainly the receipt of international travellers and how those hotel isolation clusters have unfolded.

      • A large number due to the security guards at quarantine hotels , besides that twits with it not isolating properly .

        • twits with it not isolating properly = stupidity

          • @GG57: One more until cases began to spike Andrews until yesterday didn't use Scomo's offer of ADF staff .

            • @popsiee: We will never know if the ADF was offered first or requested first (but some ADF were already assisting).

    • It is not a remarkable success if you compare the populations of victoria and northern Territory and proportionate the the number of the cases to the total populations.

    • I suppose NT receives the same number of foreign travellers direct from overseas like Victoria and NSW too.

      • I'd love to see this in comparison to the population ratio.. The Territory as a whole sees a massive influx of overseas travel year on year.. Kakadu, Uluru, Litchfield and East/West Arnhem Land.

So much so there are hundreds of Tourism operators that would have been forced to close their doors permanently, without the keeper payments.

        • Sydney had the most returned quarantine travelers followed closely by Melbourne .
The other states and cities had virtually none compared to these two places and should be thankful !

        • +1

Once you get into the detail of comparisons, it becomes a minefield of points to clarify.
You could compare Darwin and Melbourne, or NT and Victoria, but there are a lot of areas in Victoria that have had minimal positive tests (much like in NT I imagine).

Hopefully the NT tourism industry will be able to recover when domestic travel is up and running, as the larger population centres look for somewhere (domestically) to go.

    • Victoria is currently testing more than 20,000 people per day (compared to ~200 in NT), hardly surprising that they're getting more positive results.

  • I guess this is still relevant? :D
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hks6Nq7g6P4

  • At least the first time people were tricked into thinking TP came from overseas.
We now know that that was a lie. Stores should be putting in purchase limits asap

    • Limiting the number of goods is limiting their turnover and potential profits. That won't go down well with their stakeholders.

      • +1

If they still sell out, they haven't lost any sales have they?

        • Faster turnovers are better on the balance sheet than slow sales.

      • If we’re entering a second round of panic buying then they’ll have no trouble selling all their stock even with limits in place.

  • I never thought people would be extremely this dumb.

  • +1

Men in Black in 1997 was quite accurate: "A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it."

Could people be this dumb again and rush for toilet paper? Yes, yes they can.

  • +1

Unfortunately there is a strong sense of fomo here. Just look at the property market.

  • +1

Hmmmm its on I've been to 15 stores no toilet paper but a few with the rip off little packs remaining .

    • +1

….very disappointing. it really is frustrating that this is happening again

      • doesn't seem to be a problem in Canberra thankfully. Was in both a coles and woolies here this morning looking for a different item, both had more than half full shelves of dunny rolls.

        • …yeh the recent cases in vic have got everyone on edge….irrational panic buying mode seems to be kicking in again

        • No, it has started in Canberra. Noticed none left in Chisholm Coles at yesterday arvo. Some people are such morons.
